Teddy Roosevelt is credited with creating the united states forest service, 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 4 national game preserves, 5 national parks, and 18 national monuments It's because of him people have public land to be able to hunt, camp, off road and just enjoy the outdoors in.

Admittedly, this was not taken in the way you're supposed to, i.e. relaxed for at least 5 minutes, but I do strongly recommend getting it checked as well. Have been there (far worse, actually) so have come to know what long term blood pressure issues can lead to. Prevent it now while you have a chance. No shame in it.

I mean, he's filming a video and randomly getting a blood pressure check after walking (don't know what speed) to the vehicle. I doubt he's relaxed... There's no way that's his resting blood pressure. Plus he was standing. Sure he should get it checked just in case, but I'm sure he's already on that

Love this video! When I saw it in my feed I was surprised because TR wasn't a drinker but then saw the giant jug of coffee and smiled. I majored in history and interned at the Theodore Roosevelt Association in Long Island during undergrad. They describe him perfectly, like a cartoon character come to life. If they talked about all the interesting TR stories the video would have been hours long. A few of my favorite stories about him I learned while an intern and visiting his home in Oyster Bay, NY. While he was president, he had a boxing match in the white house and received such a sever hit he lost sight in one eye. He also learned judo while president. TR kept up his hiking as president and would often take foreign dignitaries with him, there is a story on one occasion while hiking with an ambassador they reached a river and TR stripped down and swam across the river. The ambassador, basically being forced to follow does the same but keeps his white gloves on, when TR sees him on the other side of the river naked like him except for the white gloves he asks the ambassador why he kept his gloves on and the ambassador responded something to the effect of, in case they ran across any women as they continued it would be improper to great them without his gloves. A few little add-ons I always found interesting to the stories they shared. One of the treatments for asthma when TR was a kid was smoking, so his father would take him on fast open carriage rides in NYC as a kid while TR was smoking a cigar to try force air into his lungs and treat his asthma. TR's father helped found the American Natural History Museum in NYC and not only did TR provide so many specimens as mentioned but he learned taxidermy starting around 11 or 12 years old and preserved a good portion of those specimens he shot himself. The bullet he was shot with stayed in his chest for the rest of his life. It had cracked a rib and the bullet's location made it too risky to remove.

The story about the heart murmur reminds me of an old, old joke. A cop goes to the doctor, who tells him he has to stop eating donuts. If he stops, he will add five years to his life span. So the cop says to the doctor, "What I'm hearing is, I can go without a donut for five years, or I can eat donuts until the day I die."

He was a rough rider to scientist to governor of NYS and created the police academy. He did it all. He was tough and hard headed. The definition of what a true American was. A trail blazer! All of the Rough Riders were supposed to be on horseback during the Cuba campaign since they were a cavalry unit. However when they went to embark their ships in Florida for the journey there wasn't room for all the horses. So only the officers were allowed to keep their mounts which is also a big reason TR rode up the hill the day of that battle. Great episode highlighting a lot of the stories of one of the biggest personalities America has ever known.

Ah, Teddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill, which didn't happen on San Juan Hill, and the Rough Riders, who weren't riding, and the power of Yellow Journalism. There's a wonderful book by Richard Zacks called "Island of Vice: Theodore Roosevelt's Quest to Clean up Sin-Loving New York", which explains the normative nature of his times Populism. Also, for fun and solid history, although it's fiction, Caleb Carr's "The Alienist." I'm not a modern historian, but these are really intricate and fun materials. Carr has the best cross-cultural understanding of immigrant NYC, of which Roosevelt was Police Commissioner, until Lindsay Faye wrote her Timothy Wilde novels (set earlier chronologically with the creation of the police force and truly empathic). Perhaps not oddly, both examine serial murders committed in a time when the underclass doesn't matter. Smart books. Great reading.
