** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

I had a tour in Glengoyne, including dinner and created my own whiskey 8 years ago. We stayed in the nearby Cameron House on Loch Lomond for 2 nights with a party of 16. 2 of us had climmed a mountain that morning. Some famous trail.

This is awesome to see. I was at their distillery when I was on a school trip in April, and we could see the whole process. Also, I bought a 15 yo single malt from them, and as I tasted it, it was complex, a bit spicy, but smooth. Also, shoutout to Isla, who was the guide when we visited (also, we were the 1st guests of her's). Great review, their product is approved, and recommended! :D

Nice video...I tried Glengoyne 12yr for the first time a month or so ago...Man was it smooth, very easy to drink, not super complex, but very fruity and buttery. My first thought was that it reminded me of an Irish, sort of a Scotch interpretation of a cross between Tullamore D.E.W and Teeling single malt.

a few years ago i was in scotland and went on a distillery tour at glengoyne, had never heard of them before so it was a bit of a gamble. Anyway, great whiskey, great tour, got to taste 12, 18 and 20something year old. The 12 yo was definitely my favorite! i can really recommend a tour there for anyone who likes whiskey, once this pandemic-shit is over :)

I was looking for something on the single malt whisky flavour map that was in the 'Rich/Delicate' quadrant, after trying 'Light/Smoky' (Ardbeg, Bruichladdich) and 'Rich/Smoky' (Lagavullin, Talisker), and so now I'm trying Glengoyne. I hadn't heard of it, don't recall having seen it at my local bottle shop before (or pehaps just hadn't noticed). Very nice.

I've been brewing beer for years. Golden Promise barley along with Maris Otter create really full and malty beer when compared to North American 2-row and 6-row barley. I wonder if any whiskey distillers ever use specialty malts like they do in beer.....things like Munich Malt, Biscuit Malt, Belgian Crystal Malts etc?

Guys... When it comes to rum Zacapa has the aura of a Macallan but actually is nothing more than a flavoured whisky. Rum is going through a tuff process in which the Real rum is starting to get the attention that it deserves. Zacapa, Diplomático and even Plantation are all rum that uses sugar after distillation. Daniel.. I recommend you to find rums from Foursquare, Barbados (vintage 2004, 2005). Kill Devil ( Hunter L. From Scotland) Dunkan Taylor Velier These are few rum distilleries/ind bottlers that offers real rum. If you want something extreme, get Jamaicans. Worthy Park or Hampden. Cheers!

this reminds me of the irish whiskey greenspot. update: i took roy's tip on comparing them side by side...now i can understand what rob/whiskey in the 6 said of the glengoyne having more malt on the nose...and what rex says of the greenspot having that butter biscuit. despite my palette being limited (i'm a newbie, 3 months in) that tips of side by side tasting/smelling really does help one in pulling out better the differences. btw, per the commentor's op on all Irish tasting the same: try jameson black barrel (toffee, butterscotch) vs greenspot (fresh apple). that jameson's black barrel is just something....like an irish whiskey married a bourbon and they had a baby.

Would really want to see you both crack the Glenlivet code on the Glenlivet website. It requires you to test your skills by inputting your answers in a sort of like a game to assess the new "Glenlivet Code" whiskey which does not come with anything hinting of its notes, age, cask, aromas, color etc... Not sure anyone got a 100 on that one so far.

If you happen to have access to a Costco near you in Austin, I think it'd be interesting to hear your opinions on their whiskeys. They have blended scotch, Canadian, 18 year scotch, and have even released some older age-statement scotch in the past I believe. The price of these is very appealing to me, but I fear there is good reason for the cheap price tag!

The liquor laws in TX suck. While we do have liquor stores attached to Costco, they aren't "Costco" liquor. So we can't get any costco branded liquor which sucks balls. I went to CO last year and especially loved the Costco Cognac and not to mention their prices!

I recently bought a Glengoyne 3 pack with 10, 15 and 18 years old small bottles. In a previous episode you said that it is not necessarily better just because it is older. Of course I think I should drink these in age order but do you have a different idea? PS I wrote this question in a previous episode but figures it might make more sense here...

With aging you definitely lose some of the fruity floral notes and especially with the Glengoyne series the years really add a lot of smooth woody nutty chocolate notes if that makes sense haha. In essence if you fancy a more fruity whisky the 10 is a better choice for the moment, if you fancy a smooth rich whisky the 15 and 18 are ‘’better’’ whisky`s.

Can you explain what "Slow Fermentation" is? I know, Google it (which I've totally already done), but I'm asking for the lazy people.
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 6 жыл бұрын
The temp at which fermentation goes controls how fast the yeast works. Hot and fast fermentation makes the yeast eat through the available sugars at high speed and it can create significantly different flavor components. Slow and controlled fermentation is more common in the beer world and it keeps the yeast under control and creating more taste acceptable components. that's the seriously oversimplified version :-)

The more I get into whiskey the more I realize I don't really want it to be smooth and forgettable. I want my whiskey to give me something...whether it's a spice kick, peat/smoke, abv hit....something. If I want something smooth and easy to drink I won't spend the $$$ on an "expensive" whiskey and just go drink something like a screwdriver(OJ and Vodka) or something similar.
