Enjoyed this one. Agree of course with all the comments on the the issues with the presentation. It had a lot to give at 40%, hard to imagine it at 50%+, NCF Cheers!

My wife picked this (or a port 16) as a gift from Heathrow travel. 1 liter on discount. Not bad, until I had to drink it. I honestly don't remember the underwhelming experience. But it did confirm that There was no need to go near Aberfeldy. She thought the bottle looked classy and the giftee is a very cheap bastard who drinks e150 by the bucketful. Thank god for whiskytube! I bought myself the Ardbeg Smoketrails and the Craig 17 that day. The 17 was less than half of $200+ we see it for in the states. Avoiding 40% and 43% makes shopping so much easier.

Travel retail is a bit of a minefield. Lots of duds and lazily thought up exclusives IMHO. Sounds like you got some good drams out of it though 👍

Another good review. I've heard that about Aberfeldy, although I've not yet tried it. I can't bring myself to part with my 'hard-earned' already knowing it's reputation. Looking forward for the final two !.

Sample, miniature or bar pour is the way to go with Aberfeldy. Try before you buy. They're obviously capable of producing great whisky but their current presentations make it a difficult purchase to justify...

Hi Shane. Did I detect a little rant today 🤔😀, deservedly so. I don’t why distilleries mature a single malt especially after all those years (15 + yrs) then bottle it at a low abv chill filter the life out of it then give it a fake tan. The Aberfeldy 12 is basically the same(if I remember correctly)in that the nose is quite decent but it’s like drinking coloured water. ( got a 100 ml sample from a friend a couple of years ago). Ehh just a little 😂 from the nose it seems like some VERY good stock has been put into this. Great house style, very good casks but the end result has been taken away from us. A whisky hate crime!

Yeah but we can sell more the more water we add. I have a neighbor who was boasting to me they bought Aberfeldy 16! The age and price won. Most consumers don’t look or care about abv, coloring, chill filtered. Cheers 🥃

Exactly that. They're ruining what would be good whisky in the interests of improving profit margins and lowering duty. Worse than that, its not even cheap over here. If it cost £40-45 like Dalwhinnie 15 (43%) then maybe it'd be different 🤷‍♂️ Are there really that many consumers paying £70 for a bottle of whisky that have so little idea about what is good? Just seems like a waste of would be good whisky to me. Cheers 🥃

@@WhiskyLock last week I was standing in front of glass case … ooh… coincidentally my dentist was standing there peering at a Glenlivit 18@ 40% with bling box for $170😳 He was shopping to impress a host. Adjacent was a Signatory Glenlivit 16 cask strength single cask for $200. I tried educating him that although both were pricey, the Signatory was better value and quality and his host would be elated . Price was no object to him… After I walked away he bought the blingy Glenlivit 18@ 40%.

@@justwhisky I still haven't tried the new Glenlivet 18 at 40%. Still holding out for a sample to compare to my last 43% bottle so I don't have to waste £100 to confirm my disappointment 😂

From the way you were describing it, good aroma weak palate, I thought it was Benriach 16yr. Hopefully the last 2 make up for this Alberfeldy. Cheers!

I've not had a Benriach for quite a while. I used to quite like their cheapy Heart of Speyside and Curiositas.

Agreed. ABF16 has a huge nose compared to the 12, strong heather but it took me 1/3 bottle to get through the weak abv, rather disappointed - I always add a teaspoon of Tomatin cask strength 57.5% to an ounce of ABF16 40% = about 42.5-43.0 % final abv

It's so strange isn't it. How the nose can be so good and the palate... not so much. And even stranger how they think that's OK. Great idea bumping up the ABV with Tomatin. Sounds like it would make a very drinkable dram 👍

Excellent bit of detective work my friend and I feel your pain. It sounds like what I would expect and that's because I've never owned a bottle. I cannot bring myself to pay £70 for anything bottled at 40%.It's obviously a whisky that is meant to appeal to another audience but I can't imagine who. What's the target audience for Aberfeldy?

My thoughts exactly. I find it hard to believe that there are many people paying £70 for whisky that don't know better... but we'd probably both be surprised. This could easily be very good... but it's not 😕

Spot on with that review Shane. I recently purchased a Bruichladdich from Master of Malt and they sent me an Aberfeldy 12 year old as one of their secret Santa miniatures. It was 40% and like the 16 year old in your review was pretty underwhelming on the palate. Went to their website and was then surprised (disappointed !!) to see that all their core range of 12, 16 and 21 is bottled at 40% !! No doubt all coloured and chill filtered. No wonder this distillery has been off my radar as nobody talks about it. Anyway… hope there’s a good one in there for Christmas Day !

seems like Santa been more generous for me. i recently ordered couple of bottles from MoM and get Glengoyne 12yo as a wee Santa gift. its 43% so bit better. its a big shame for Aberfeldy to producing their whiskies at such a bad presentation. 👍😁🥂🙋🏻‍♂️

Yes I doubt MoM will give away good craft whisky but at least your Glengoyne 12 is an improvement on my Aberfeldy…👍

Craziness to bottle a quality 16yo at this low strength. Even worse the 21! I got a free dram of 40% rum from MoM Whisky Santa. I won't say from which distillery because it was shite 😂 at least they saved me from buying a whole bottle 😉 Cheers 🥃

Hey maybe I need to try Aberfeldy again; I generally consider this one of the bottom bottom single malts. In other words, I think it sucks even the 18. Maybe you were having an off day.

I'd definitely recommend a miniature or a bar pour. You can tell there was some real care and quality stock put into this before they watered it to hell. Not sure I'd justify buying a bottle of this at full price for that reason though...

A product that took 16 years to make at the bottom of the leaderboard, and a 5 year old product with good presentation still reigning at the top since the very start. It's a damn shame, but that just shows you how easily you can F things up if you're getting greedy with watering down and diluting your product. Age isn't everything it's made to be in whisky.

Absolutely. Long maturations can do wonderful things but if you plan on sabotaging it at the last step then it's a waste of time. Crap in - crap out.

Did not have this one so far. Does not sound to be worth a try. And: to be honest you have sometimes to be grumpy. No problem at all. Keep it up!

Nothing irritates me more than good whisky ruined 😂 and this one has massive potential. In regards to trying it, I think Aberfeldy used to do gift packs of three different expressions in 50ml bottles. If you can find something like that then it is worth trying. Personally I'll be waiting for a 46% version though. Cheers 🥃

Another example how big potential is ruined by distillery owners so Red Card for Bacardi-Martini. P.S. im still surprised that this one is positioned higher than Benromach 10 in Leaderboard. 2 drams left and im waiting for 2 killers or 1 super dram on bonus day. hope and 🤞. cheers and see you 2moro 👍😁🥂🙋🏻‍♂️

Massive wasted potential. Obviously my placement was done blind but the only thing keeping it off the bottom is the very nice nose. And that's the saddest thing. You can tell that VERY good whisky has gone into this but then they've added so much water that it's barely worth drinking. The score reflects the best parts of what is left. If I deducted points for what has been removed then it'd be a bit lower. Hoping for two amazing drams for the home stretch! Cheers 🥃

You’re right to be grumpy. It’s mind boggling how distilleries can take wonderful whisky and ruin it on purpose by chill filtration and bottling it sub 46%

I think Aberlour 18 is better than this to be fair. At least it was last time I bought it in the days before they shrank the bottle and inflated the price...
