I recently tried a bottle of 2007 10 year old Ardbeg and though on the arrival of the palate you had the bold peaty twiggy smoky sooty ashy notes you expect from a 10 year old Ardbeg. That would slowly develop into something much deeper in the finish with these smoldering peaty oaky notes, vanillas and honeys, lemony limes, grain notes, and it would really increase in depth massively about 10 seconds after sipping so I would agree in that its not 10 years old but more like 15-17 years old and perhaps even a small portion older, and masterfully blended. we compared it to the modern 10 (2018 bottling) and the 2018 held its own but in comparison was a diluted, flavor lacking version without that depth it wasn't nearly as much of a real taste of Ardbeg. sure it was a competently made peated whisky and it certainly identified as Ardbeg, but not nearly as "Ardbeggy" as the 2007 version. The 2007 really felt like and old style of whisky that isn't made anymore. On another note, we also tried the first official release of the corryvreckan from 2009 and compared it to a modern version. That was a far more shocking comparison to the 10 year olds, night and day difference. Almost like we were drinking a neutral spirit with synthetic Ardbeg essence dropped into it. the modern corryvreckan was really not great, the old one however was really nice.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and findings 🙏 there really is a massive night and day difference between these Ardbeg bottlings. People who say that whisky doesn't change clearly haven't done these experiments. I recently got a good deal on a bottle of Ardbeg 19. I like it. Will review it soon but I think this old Ardbeg 10 had more of the old malt magic. And the old Ardbeg 17 had far more. I love the current Ardbeg core range but they simply don't make them like they used to.... Cheers 🥃

I don't want to crap on any of the new distilleries, especially their very early stuff but this does need work. That's the only info I got from the distillery. I've noticed a more fruity and malt driven profile in a lot of English Whisky which I'd attribute towards most English distilleries being small batch and low yield compared to most Scotch, fermenting slightly longer and in a slightly warmer climate. Bimber shot down the idea, claiming that England isn't considerably warmer than Scotland but from my home brewing experience I say a degree or two can and will make that kind of difference...

Damn, what a great idea for a video. History lesson right here as well. I was shocked to learn how long scotch existed before utilizing maturation. Barely beat bourbon despite the difference in age of the countries. In my opinion white dog (pre-bourbon) is absolutely terrible. Column still neutral grain that needs the new charred oak barrel for minimum four years in most climates. I would keep a bottle of this though on hand for sure. Maybe I’ll try to convince an American single malt company to release one since I’m here in the states. Thanks again for another awesome video.

Nice review. I like your measured approach and how like myself you always allow the price to affect your overall opinion of a whisky. It needs to be factored in. I purchased a 70cl 2005 Moine Oloroso in 2022 after trying as the final dram of Warehouse 9 tasting. I paid £155 in the shop. I weighed up the fact that Bunna gun to head is probably my favourite distillery after the disappearance of Springbank post COVID and that I might only be there at that location a handful of times in my life it was worth the splurge. It’s very similar to the notes you are getting in this PX release at around the same age and price. I don’t know if it’s the best whisky I own but would say it’s in the running and for the same price I would buy a second bottle or something similar.

Thank you 🙏 I think these Bunna specials are great picks. Usually pretty safe buys compared to a lot of the roughly 18yo stuff we're getting from other distilleries lately. If we're going to pay £150+ then we should at least get something good and Bunna does that. Cheers 🥃

Confusing indeed! I think I can see what they were trying to say but I'm not sure it was conveyed totally clearly. Probably why they kept the fact that the casks were refill on the back label and just stated virgin oak on the front... It also makes you wonder how many other distilleries are calling casks 'virgin' when they've been used before 🤔 That would explain why some virgin oak maturations can be relatively long without being over oaked... I like your guess of previously holding grain whiskey & possibly for a shorter time to leave more barrel character intact. I’m starting to realize now after expanding into all whiskey categories & aged tequila as well how neutral corn & wheat are. I think you could almost call bourbon “charred American white oak tea” or “barrel flavored alcohol” & not be far off. Awesome review as always. Thanks, Shane. I've never yet had an English whisky, it just seems there's always something more "urgent" from Scotland higher up on the shopping list . Which leads me to the honest question: who are English whisky makers marketing to? Patriots, local tourists, buyers of quirky things, whisky nerds? I find myself little attracted to German whisky over here, a lot of it tastes like what the distillery usually makes (fruit spirits or "Korn"), others are drowned in cask flavor and then there's (apparently) really good ones that are inevitably way more expensive than comparable Scottish craft whiskies. With India / Taiwan I'm getting a definable alternative style (tropical maturation), with Ireland there's "pot still" but there's no narrative for German whisky except "it's hip and we wanted to try it." Don't know how that has worked in England. Is there even a substantial point to the moniker "English whisky" or isn't it just "craft whisky distilleries south of the Scottish border"? But then a name like "English Whisky company" or putting an iconic landscape such as "Cotswold" in your name is, after all, a statement. Questions, questions...
@WhiskyLock11 күн бұрын
Lots of very good points. I think there are identifiable similarities amongst some English distilleries but yes it's essentially 'Whisky made in England' as you'd expect. I don't think that's all too surprising though, even in Scotland I'd argue that the Lowlands are the only geographical area that comes close to a unified style. Finding good English whisky can take a bit of work. There are some that are just putting out cask juice like your German distilleries. There's another distillery near me who I won't name who insist on using a lot of new French oak and a beer stripper. I haven't enjoyed anything I've tried from them. Generally though, English Whisky distilleries are very small scale, quality focused operations. And now that many of them have been around long enough to put out 10-15yo whisky that's going to give some of them an edge over Scotch. If that translates to more sales then it will be interesting to see how they handle that with almost all of them being extremely small. Cotswolds have already expanded dramatically with much larger stills. Time will tell if that is the right move. I hate the rebrand to 'The English' and English Whisky Company by the way. They're obviously trying to define themselves as THE name in English Whisky but it's just painful when nobody knows if you're talking about the distillery or the region 😣

Hi Shane We finally got this in NZ! I just tried it! The labels on the bottle are the same as yours but the bottling code suggests it was bottled in 2023. so it’s a 5-6 year old version. I agree with all your comments. It doesn’t seem as peaty on the palate as Ardbeg 10 but it definitely brings some complexity in the nose. I’m usually not too concerned about bottling strength (as long as it doesn’t taste too watered down) but this one definitely could benefit of some extra %s. If the labels are the same in your and my bottling it is fair to assume they are pretty much the same whisky at different age. Did you have another (older) bottle? Well…. Newer bottle but older whisky…. I’m sure you know what i mean 😂 Would love to hear what you think of the Torabhaig progress… Cheers!
