Whistler Blackcomb Needs a Miracle

It looks like us skiers need a Christmas miracle. The pineapple express packed a tropical punch the last few days at Whistler Blackcomb. Rain from the village up to the Peak washed away all the snow base coverage we had worked so hard accumulate. This wasn’t the iciest day I’ve ever had at Whistler, but it was definitely the sharkiest. Whistler Blackcomb's current skiing conditions are looking grim. We're begging for snow but whoever has a patent on P-Tex must be doing pretty well. Let’s get that snow voodoo going again.

Rain like this is NO JOKE! (And can even be dangerous! ...The following freeze may be a blessing in disguise, though.) I recall one year at Snoqualmie (Snowcrummy) Pass when it rained so hard, so fast, that the water flowing over the frozen ground, yet under the snow, literally created a geyser that shot a 1/2 meter thick jet of water several meters in the air! I remember seeing a bunch of collapsed spots, big enough to swallow several people! And, at one of the ski areas, Hyak, the water ate away at the ground, causing several dozen acres of ground, a meter or so deep (and the snow above it), to slide, destroying the entire main face and damaging the lifts... Conversely, I remember 1998 at Mt. Baker!! (record for the most snow recorded anywhere, ever: 1,140 inches!). The snow was so deep that they had to use dynamite to clear it in places... The avarage was a foot of pow every day for the whole season! And, one 100-meter long stretch of a chairlift was actually about 3-4 meters BELOW the snow level, towers and all. It was surreal. So, it goes both ways... This ol' wheel will come around again.

I was there on Xmas day in 2009. We had 25 cm of fresh on top an over 2 metre base at the mid field. Looks like a completely different ski field. Hope it sorts itself out and you stop getting all that Hawaiin air

As an ice coast rider, you gotta learn to love ice. While pow is undeniably more fun, sketchy conditions do make you better. They force you to adapt and carefully choose your lines. Or maybe I have Stockholm syndrome...

10:00 is so funny. Every time at the exact same spot, whenever you go to ski on Whistler. You see a bunch of snowboarders lying there. That's a flat area and they don't pick up speed so they stop. It is a long walk if you stop right there lol.

I'm tempted to say that is a typical day back here on the Ice Coast. LoL. In all seriousness though, it's not that bad here usually. It's rare the entire mountain turns into a skating rink like that. Freaking El Nino. Washed us out here in Vermont as well and Maine got hammered! I feel bad for all the people that spent good money to vacation in Whistler this Holiday!
