White Film Fungus on Spider Wood Driftwood is totally normal. Sometimes you can put aquarium driftwood into a fish tank setup it grows a white gel film over the wood. There are a couple things you can do to get rid of this. I go over these methods that I use in this video. There’s no need to freak out because if you watch this video I help you fix this issue.

Wow! Thanks for your impute. I am relatively new to the hobby and set up my first planted tank to which I put in some great pieces of wood. Two days later, OMG, this white web started to come out of the wood. I thought all of my work was wasted. In the meantime, I will add some snails and do more research. Thanks

Fungus thrives on decaying wood. You can boil it before use, but fungus is abundant in the environment. Air, soil, plants, water. So, even if you boil the wood the fungus can still be elsewhere in your tank and adhere to the wood and utilize it for nutrients I had this issue, and since I’m an actual microbiologist and mycology specialist: I took a sample and put it under the microscope. It was a Fusarium species fungus (not diatoms or bacteria or algae) A very common plant pathogen. It causes wilt in plants and root rot. What do you do about it? You can either continuously clean it, or let your animals eat it. It’s loaded with protein! If you’re using houseplants like pothos or monstera, their roots can contaminate your water if you don’t clean them with hydrogen peroxide before putting them in your tank. Good luck, y’all

That is the key point @3:20, the white film is not from the wood itself! But organisms already in the tank feeding on the wood! Boiling the wood prior to placement is not for preventing the white film, but for other reasons as mentioned.

Usually can happen when you start a new tank and have a big bacteria bloom (cloudy water) A lot of untreated wood, the bacteria will feed off the carbohydrates I think I read. Algae and bacteria adhere to them. It can cause your tank to smell like a swamp so sometimes if you dont have fish or critters eating them up fast enough, its best to remove the wood and scrub them off. Use a big bucket and fill it with hot water and let more tanins leak out of it too to treat it.

I had this stuff on my driftwood which then grew all over the plants and the rest of the substrate and tank and honestly the only way you can get rid of it is to just clean it constantly. If you’re cycling the tank and it’s happening even cleaning it, it will still come back so you just need to be persistent and keep cleaning it. It will eventually die off once the tank is cycled.

Ok, so to anyone who saw this video. Here’s the solution. The white biofilm that forms on top of the bark can be eaten by nerite snails, rabbit snails, and shrimp. Obviously if you have fish in your tank, shrimp aren’t an option. Mystery snails will take care of it and they don’t multiply like crazy Nerite snails don’t do as great a job, but they will also eat it. Rabbit Snails aren’t as great as mystery snails for the job, but you’ll see less poop from fish around. Other than that, it can go away on its own. Clown Plecos in theory should also help the situation. Good luck.

I bought a cool piece of spider wood a few days ago and brought it home to boil it and release the tannins. For some reason the wood has taken on a very dark color in my tank (almost black). Does all spider wood do this?I was really hoping for something a bit lighter.
@justinneeley3061
@justinneeley3061 8 ай бұрын
Mine did the same thing. I think my problem was I had other driftwood boiling with it, so maybe that affected it. The darker color actually worked out with my tank, so I’m not too bummed. Maybe instead of boiling it try letting it just soak in water?

Had I know that Spiderwood leaches out tannis and discolors my water I would never have put it in my aquarium, I didn't boil it and it was too big to boil had it in the aquarium for 3 months now yes the brown discoloration got less and less but it's still turns my water slightly discolored doesn't look good, I decided to go natural with 6.5 gallon and this aquarium is more work then my 36 gallon that is not natural, syphoning the water around live plants and sand is difficult, I'm thinking of taking out the spiderwood and putting a fake one in as least my aquarium won't have brown water.

(It is trying to neutralize/settle into the settings of the aquarium (: Amano shrimp love it!
