Today I went to a park in the heart of San Francisco Chinatown where all the elderly Chinese go to play cards! I set up a little table to give free English lessons and practice a little Cantonese as well! How did people react when I speak to them in Chinese?

Hey Chris, If you want to improve your Cantonese through watching HK films; I would strongly recommend that you watch ANY of the movies or filmworks directed or produced by Wai Ka-Fai (韋家輝). Ask ANYBODY who has lived in Hong Kong for at least 20+ years, and they will certainly know who Wai Ka-Fai is. I would compare him to very famous American directors like Oliver Stone or Sam Peckinpah; people who grew up in times of GREAT social distress, filled with all sorts of conflicts and turmoil... Things they have witnessed happen like WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, ect. 死人, 冧樓, 撞機, 沉船, 炒車... Just lots and lots of people in trouble or dying everywhere! With exposure to all kinds of '蘇州屎' (Suzhou Shit) like that, it would surely have heavily influenced the themes in their movies and films. There is an old TVB drama called '義不容情 Looking Back in Anger (1989)'. It is very old, but it's still VERY POPULAR and many Cantonese-speaking people know about it. It's one of the most watched TVB series by Chinese people in Hong Kong and around the world. It reflects upon the old pre-1997 culture and society of Hong Kong and its people; involving events, situations, social interactions, and pop-culture references that simply CANNOT be recreated in modern times today. You can learn quite a bit about authentic Hong Kong history and culture from that show. There are some very intense moments and bloody feuds/conflicts with the characters involved. Trust me, you will want to pull your hair out after you watch it! This is because of the vast amount of 社會見識 (social knowledge) that you will gain after watching it, and not just from learning Cantonese. Trust me, you will learn ALOT. I first saw it on VCD format like many years ago, from a friend who used to run a videostore in New York Chinatown. Back then, it was only available in Cantonese/Manadarin audio with traditional Chinese subtitles. I had ZERO knowledge of Chinese back then, but my friends FORCED me to watch it because they said it will help me learn more about Chinese culture. It took me a LONG TIME, like FOREVER to finally figure out what the hell they were saying, but I eventually figured it out after watching it over and over again like multiple times over the years. With 50 episodes, it was ALOT to take in and digest for a non-Cantonese speaker! And coming from an Italian-American who grew up in New York, I am quite proud to have watched it myself during my own lifetime. You can probably find the episodes here somewhere on KZfaq, so be sure to check it out!

So enjoyed this video. I'm kind of surprised to hear that Taishanhua is still used quite a bit in San Francisco's tang yen fau, as the young lady was saying. I would have thought that Mandarin took over, but I did know that Cantonese is still the main dialect spoken in Chinatown. We used to go out there every other summer when my dad and mom took us out there in the 1970s. Dad was from Kaiping and mom was from Taishan. Good to see the Kaiping connection as well as the Taishan connection is still strong with San Francisco's Chinatown after all these years. Keep teaching up the good people with your English seminars. You are providing a valuable service to the Asian American communities.

@@LaomaChris Yes, Cantonese is very tough. My daughter says it's because of the tones, much like Mandarin. But you've mastered Mandarin so I'm very sure your Cantonese will be just as good. I'm quite sure there are many Cantonese around. It's just that they won't speak in Cantonese unless they hear you speaking it first. Because you are a foreigner, they don't expect you to speak Mandarin, much less Cantonese! I love watching their reactions when you speak to the Chinese in Mandarin. And then they start talking to you so warmly😊 I'm Cantonese and I'm trying to learn Taishanese. Super tough. My late Grandma spoke it and so does my Dad and his siblings. Strange thing is they don't speak to any of the kids so none of us can speak Taishanese. I can understand them but I can only speak the very basic like greetings.
