A Soviet ‘Red Western’ classic. The Russian civil war is over, but Basmachi gangs still roam Central Asia. Fyodor Ivanovich Sukhov, a Red Army soldier, intends to return home to his beloved wife Katerina Matveyevna, but unexpected events force him to stay in the desert. The brutal bandit Abdullah and his gang kill everyone in their path and threaten to destroy the women of their leader’s former harem.
Fun facts: Film scholars believed that White Sun of the Desert had much in common with such films as The Passenger by Antonioni, The Sheltering Sky by Bertolucci, and Soviet movie The Thirteen by Mikhail Romm. In 2021, a distant Western reference might be Django Unchained by Quentin Tarantino. Therefore, the genre of the movie is vague. Film critics define the movie as a western, a red western (or eastern), and even an action flick. Many quotes from White Sun of the Desert have become catchphrases in Russian culture. The song Your Noble Highness Lady Fortune, written especially for the movie, became a hit.
The Red Western as a genre, with films such as The Elusive Avengers, Dauria, At Home Among the Strangers, and White Sun of the Desert, to name a few, became a relevant phenomenon in the Soviet film industry, causing a wave of imitations in the 60-70s, both in central studios and in film studios of the Central Asian republics.
Year of production: 1969

You should know that the original script was rather anti-communist. There Sukhov was not a bolshevik, but a lone wolf in search of his wife, fleeing bolsheviks, and Abdulla was actually a very interesting, well-educated character, deeply in love with a Russian woman he had met in Saint Petersburg. He did not give a fudge about his harem that he was basically obligated to keep against his wish because of his status among the Central Asian nobility. An extremely interesting and multifaceted piece of literature. Completely butchered in the movie.

Interesting fact: Customs officer Vereschagin has a real prototype ( though with another name). He was really feared by border smugglers and had a detachment of soldiers under his lead, they fought with smugglers and protected the borders of Russian empire. When bolsheviks came to power, the new authorities visited him, but seeing his dedication to the service didn’t dismiss him, but gave even more soldiers. And the guy served as a head of customs for many years until just before the pension, he was appointed the Head of Fire Fighting Service of city Tashkent, where he served before his retirement.

I saw a dubbed version of this on Australian TV in the 70s. It was part of a series called 'Stuart Wagstaff's World Playhouse', but Stuart was rather puzzled at what a Russian, returning home after the Revolution, would be doing in what looked like Arabia! I didn't find out till years later that this was Soviet Central Asia - not quite the Middle East, but close to it - and the sea is the Caspian, with Iran on its southern shore.

@@whatisthishandlegarbage As a resident of one of Russia's neighboring countries, I will say that the trend of the last 10 years in Russian society is growing in popularity of communism, despite the fact that the Kremlin is trying to vilify this period. All this is happening against the backdrop of another trend, that capitalism has been sinking into a global crisis for the last 15 years. So your conclusions that the Soviet period will never repeat itself are wrong. With the limited resources of our planet, humanity cannot live indefinitely in a consumer culture. Sooner or later people will get over this stage, no matter where it happens in Russia or any other country.
@vivadjango
@vivadjango 11 ай бұрын
@SechMan I agree in general. I remember when Jose Mujica (the President of Uruguay a decade ago) spoke at the U.N. (if I remember correctly) and said the consumerist model is unsustainable in the long run. That if everyone in India for example wanted to follow the U.S. ideal of a house with two cars in the garage that there are simply not enough resources for this model long term or something to that effect. I don't believe a Soviet Style centralized economy is the answer but neither is it the Neo-Liberal model of Capitalism in the U.S. where "the market" is sacrosanct and is left mostly to its own devices. The western model seems to be in essence to consume and die, and to of course be consuming a lot of prescription medication as you slowly die. Depressing stuff to be sure. However, I wouldn't want to live in the Soviet Union either. The European model of Capitalism with a strong government enforcing lots of regulations on capital seems to be the best option at the moment. But what the hell do I know?

At my high school in the early 80s in art class, there was a stash of old magazines of Soviet Life which I took great delight in reading. They told of life in general in the U.S.S.R and had a section devoted to reviews on literature,art , film, and music. In one of those magazines there was a review of this film. I only remember it was compared to a James Bond film so naturally I took interest in it and viewed it here. Loved it! The part at 28:50 where the hero sets up the old record player really got my attention because the song, played all too brief, sounded like the old Seekers hit "The carnival is Over". Anyone else noticed ?

This is an old Russian folk song about the Cossack ataman. It sings that the ataman captured an oriental beauty and forgot about his comrades. After the Cossacks reproached him for this, the ataman threw the beauty overboard of the boat on which they were sailing, and she drowned.
@robwilde855

Yes. And it turns out that the Seekers' song was deliberately based on that nineteenth-century Russian song. Wikipedia says: "The Carnival Is Over" is a song written by Tom Springfield, for the Australian folk pop group the Seekers. It is based on a Russian folk song from circa 1883, adapted with original English-language lyrics... ..."The main tune of "The Carnival is Over" is adapted from a Russian song about the Cossack ataman Stenka Razin which became popular in Russia in the 1890s. The original poem of "Stenka Razin" was written in 1883 by the poet and Povolzhye region ethnographer Dmitry Sadovnikov. The text of this poem, with minor changes, was set to the music of Из-за острова на стрежень[6] by an unknown author. "It told about an episode of the 1670-1671 Russian Peasant Uprising in which Razin allegedly killed his captive, a beautiful Persian Princess whom he had just married. Razin throws the Princess into the Volga river from his boat, in a gesture addressed to his disgruntled jealous comrades who accuse him of "mellowing down" after just one night spent with a woman." It also gives the score, so you can see where it was slightly changed.

“Because of the Island on the Rod” is a Russian song with lyrics by Dmitry Sadovnikov, considered folk. In 1669, in a naval battle off Pig Island, the free Cossacks of Stepan Razin defeated the Persian fleet. According to legend, in this battle, the daughter of the Persian commander-in-chief Mamed Khan, the “Persian princess,” was captured by the Cossacks.
