In the manga, Whitebeard lost half of his face instead of just the stache. They censored it bcuz it was too brutal. They even remove the part on the first ep where Luffy stabbed his face with a knife to prove shanks that he's ready to join their crew hence why he got a scar on his cheek. But in the anime they skipped it.

Luffy wasn't cracking or breaking, he was full on broken here. It's absolutely soul wrenching, you hate to see someone at this point you've been behind for almost 500 episodes, go through that pain. Seeing an Admiral near piss his pants at how fucking terrifying Whitebeard is, is always a great moment for me. And keep in mind, he is old, sick and dying here. If I had to guess, I'd say he's never above 50% of his all time peak in this arc. And he still humbles fools and goes out on his OWN terms, with the best final words ever. People after 20+ years were beginning to doubt Roger, after this? Renewed faith, One Piece does exist. The era of Whitebeard succeeds the era or Roger.

Do you think Magellan and Akainu trained together at some point? his Hell hound is very similar to Magellans hydra movement. (Not a spoiler) One great thing about this arc is that even if you get a massive spoiler, there's so many big events going on that it's almost impossible to be accidentally spoiled for it all. There's a lot to talk about with Whitebeard, he is indeed the fucking GOAT. Think about the sheer confidence Oda had with this, the sheer balls out, big dick in the changing room energy of writing here. He really sat down and said I'm gonna make an epic war that people will love and I'm gonna do it with 90% of the main cast missing; also the main lead isn't conscious for it all. Also I'm gonna make you fall in love with this side character you practically only met this arc and you'll see him in the halls of fame for badass characters. You're right to think no one is safe, Oda likes to lul you into a false sense of safety and then kick you in the dick when you're calling his bluff. Whitebeard was dying from the start, from his illness/age. The fighting and wounds just made it happen sooner.

The marineford arc was hands down amazing and everything that led to it. It symbolised the end of the first era of one piece before the new world arcs.

Don't forget, Blackbeard intended to go after Luffy. And he was gonna do so AND invite Ace onto his crew. Of course, Ace wasn't having either thing, so he ended up bearing what was originally intended for Luffy.

Akainu is not getting away so easily though; you could hear the brick house he shat with the full wrath of Whitebeard towering over him. He did manage to pierce another hole in the emperor (and in the manga he blew off half of Whitebeard's face, not just the mustache) but he still got off really lightly thanks to falling through the cracks. But ever the opportunist, Blackbeard skulks back to the battlefield, flanked by his new crew of Impel Down prisoners - his very reason for taking the Warlord position in the first place, with the perks of diplomatic immunity. Using his powers and Whitebeard's weakened state, Blackbeard seeks to take advantage, but even then he finds himself scurrying when his former captain tanks it, bargaining and trying to pull any sentiment he could, before his entire crew rains bullets, cannons and stabs towards him in a ruthless onslaught. oda is just a genius after this marineford arc when everybody thinks BB is too over powered he revealed more and more of the true power that can dominate the seas step by step. oda is just a genius.

Akainu's hit on Whitebeard (both of them) were direct hits, no protection. The thing is , compared to Ace's body frame, whitebeard is a lot bigger and thicker. Therefore, he didn't go in from one side and out the other. Instead, he dug holes in his front side, and used his magma to burn him from the inside. Also, as someone already pointed out, akainu blasted half of whiteveards face off with the magma punches. But they sensor that in the anime.

He got ace to become a Warlord... he was not trying to get Ace originally... he was going after any pirtate with a bounty over 100M, and the first one he met with that bounty was luffy back in Jaya... When he met Luffy his bounty was still 30M, it only became bigger after they parted ways in Jaya and he failed to capture luffy because they went to skypea... Next time Blackbeard heard anything about luffy was right after that in Water 7 which happened just a few weeks after Jaya... and Blackbeard was getting ready to go catch Luffy as a gift ot become a Warlord but Ace happened to catch him before the left for Water 7 (this was 3 days before the impel down incident)... There Blackbeard captured Ace alive, ensuring his warlord title since Ace is a way bigger pray than luffy... And he wanted to keep him alive cause he knew whitebeard would move and create an opportunity... since the Marines were getting ready to fight whitebeard he knew he could go on to impeldown in that window... which he needed to do quickly if he wanted to make it on time to be there at the end of the war... Killing Ace would have just put a target on himself for all the Whitebeard pirates... Instead he pushed that target onto the Marines themselves as a rescue instead of him as revenge...

Whitebeard was sick. He was going through treatment as we already saw while he was meeting shanks. He was ready for all the consequences, even his death in marineford. And he still created havoc there. Imagine a Whitebeard at his prime. I dont think world government would have taken a chance of executing ace publicly if Whitebeard was at his prime or anywhere close to that.

In the manga that stache loss was so much worse. Akainu literally took half of whitebeard's head with that same punch. Also I think the size difference between Ace and Whitebeard was why it didn't go all the way through Whitebeard because he's that much bigger then Akainu.

No, Blackbeard is surprisingly honest and neutral in most of what he does. To join the warlords, he would only need Ace's head, but he purposefully turned him in alive which let Whitebeard have a chance at saving him. As long as someone isn't in the way of his plans, Blackbeard won't usually try to kill/harm him. For example, he was willing to go after Luffy back in Jaya because that could give him a warlord seat, but when they met in Impel Down, he had no use for Luffy anymore and actively tried to avoid a fight until Luffy hit him anyway.

I hate this ep, it's just hard for me to watch I always end up crying. Whitebeard is my fav character. Damn i'd even have a tattoo of him in the near future, his jolly roger or the one that's on his and ace's back. I admire him like he's my old man. Hopefully we get more episodes about him, roger and garp in the future.
