In this video, I share a few simple ways you can save money by making things yourself. Enjoy! :)

CEREAL RECIPE:
6 cups rolled oats
1 cup chopped pecans
1 1/2 cup shredded coconut
1/4 cup melted butter
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup brown sugar (or succanet)
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Mix the first three ingredients together in a large mixing bowl.
Mix the remaining ingredients together and pour over the dry mixture. Mix well. Pour the granola in a parchment paper lined pan. Bake at 300 degrees for around 45 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and cool before putting into containers.
HOMEMADE SUET:
1 cup lard or bacon grease
1 cup peanut butter
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/3 cup white sugar
For a crumbly suet, mix together cold. For a compact suet, melt the lard and peanutbutter.
HOMEMADE ROOTBEER:
Put 1 cup white sugar in a two quart jar. Add 4 teaspoons rootbeer extract. Fill jar with lukewarm water. Add 1/2 teaspoon dry yeast. Put in sun for four hours.
HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT:
1 large box pure baking soda
1 container oxi-clean
1 box super washing soda
1 box borax
1 container Arm n Hammer clean scentsations in wash scent booster
2 bars Fels Naptha soap, grated

I agree. My sister hit a deer 🦌sad 😢...she is 7 hours from home. Stuck in a hotel waiting for the insurance adjustor. Trying to decide to fly home, rent a car or just stay put. There videos are keeping her sanity ... she is watching them in-between making phone calls, praying and crying

I am handy with a needle, sewing machine, crochet hook etc so I never purchase curtains, drapes, tablecloths (except vintage) pillows etc. I also made all the blankets and quilts on the beds and rugs on the floors. Both of my daughters homes and also my best friends homes are full too. This past year I had many surgeries and have 20 crochet blankets stacked up and am donating them to a homeless shelter that helps people get into apartments.

@@celinebridges7817 All of my rugs were crocheted and I used KZfaq tutorials. I know one was Jayda in Stitches but I don't remember the others. Just tyoe crochet rug in KZfaq and lots come up.

I have been making my own glass cleaner for years with a recipe that actually came from an Amish cookbook that I have. Never any streaks!! 1 pint rubbing alcohol 1 Tbsp household ammonia 1Tbsp dishwashing liquid 1gallon water It has become a family tradition each year in May/June to pick strawberries and make jam. My mom used to love to do this in upstate NY when she was able. After her death in 2012 the strawberries here in the mid-Ohio Valley were ready on Mother’s Day weekend. So in her memory I went and picked and made jam. The next year one daughter and granddaughter joined in and now almost all our grandkids have become part of the tradition. And it gives all our families a stock of wonderful jam for the year

I’ve been making an amazing stain remover for years. My granddaughter always says “Mamaw can get that stain out.” Equal parts alcohol, peroxide, dawn and water in a spray bottle. Works great. Thanks for your great videos. God Bless You.

I'm 75 years old, so not sure anyone here can relate. I can remember my grandfather making and putting it in glass bottles. We'd have the bottles explode down in the basement on the regular. Brings back great memories...thank you!

Making homemade rootbeer brings back memories of my childhood...we use to make it & put it in glass pop bottles (we had saved) . We capped the bottles after making a large amount, laid the bottles in the sun for a certain length of time, then put them in a wire basket & in a cooler of ice cold water out in our milk house...back in the day when we still used milk cans. When we milked the cows on warm summer nights that was the best treat ever.

I live close to Mary. From WV and MI I am. But. For 22 years I have lived in Amish Country OH. Hubbys job sent him here. I also couldn’t go see Mary at her Meet and Greet. My children and Grandchildren were here . They live out west 2000 miles away.

@@jackielucchesi6654 Not hating. I love this channel, and find Mary to be very genuine. But it stretches credulity to see her making detergent which contained numerous expensive ingredients, not to mention the toxic cloud she was inhaling while doing it. Mary is a hard working ambitious entrepreneur who has a shop where she aims to SELL things. So, for me, this particular video was a bid disingenuous.

I don't make my own laundry detergent, but when I get to the end of a jug, I hate to waste the product that's still clinging to the inside of the container. I add water and then shake it up to mix the remaining detergent with the water. I then pour it into a spray bottle to use as a very effective fabric refresher. It works perfectly to spray over cushions, rugs, curtains, etc. and gives such a clean scent. I do the same with my liquid fabric softener containers. Better than Febreeze, and free!

Thanks, Mary! I have been making the same soap recipe for many years. Also granola and suet! We do have a bear problem so I haven't done suet in a long time. We scaled our garden back to mostly herbs. They grow well and I do dry them to use all year. No soda here! We thrift shop for 90% of our clothes. I am thankful for a mom who taught me to sew. All of my children sew, boys and girls! One thing I do for health and money reasons is make my own dog sprays and flea powders. We also rarely buy salad dressings. I used to make my own mayonnaise when my house was fuller. I also make my own vanilla extract. I always encourage people to learn to sew. Building clothing from scratch can be expensive but altering ready made clothes, especially sale and thrift finds, can save you a lot of money. We have done formal wear like that for decades. Nobody is the wiser!

I may have opened a can of worms (or bugs)! This will be a complex answer. I will do it in 3 posts. Today I googled each article I will mention and they all came up. I am not a vet or an expert. I am a mom, grandmother, and pet owner. I have 4 dogs (soon 5) and 5 cats. My cats are indoors so I cannot help you with treatment for them (although it will be in the book I mention). I did a lot of research and my vet approves of my approach. In fact she loves my dogs, says they make the exam room smell like a spa, and feels the EO is part of why they are so calm. I live in the northeast of the USA. I don't use the sprays in the winter when temps are below freezing. Heartworm is not quite the threat here like it is in southern states. My dogs get annual physicals and blood work to check for tick borne diseases, etc. To date only a Sr rescue has been positive and he came that way. I do sometimes find ticks and remove them. Nothing is foolproof. Mary has amazing followers so I expect everyone will be kind here. I am not a follower of any specific brand of EO. Please do your research and be comfortable with your decision. This journey all began 4 years ago when my young dog had a seizure that the vet determined was from a flea/tick collar. I see now that brand has law suits against it. (I am not naming the brand on purpose) I make a plastic backed, felt pad with an elastic piece for my dog's collars. It is for the drops. This process is labor intensive on the human side. It is just part of our routine and we are used to it. Monthly I apply the powder. Daily I apply flea drops and tick spray, alternating tick drops and flea spray. Twice a week I use neem lotion/spray instead. I should add that when we still worked at a summer camp in the woods we applied one kind in the morning and the opposite in the evening. We still do depending on where we will be. Descriptions to follow. We use the same sprays on us. Never on the cats. If you have small children please research.

Flea and tick sprays and drops. Original article from Dogs Naturally magazine, "4 Natural Flea and Tick Repellent Recipes For Your Dogs". This article was based on Recipes found in this book: Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell. It mostly deals with dogs but covers other animals. Very good book. She still supports the content but no longer takes questions from it. I think she does make up now. I did add 2 drops of lemon eucalyptus EO to the flea recipe.

Neem lotion or spray. Source: Animal Wellness magazine, "Essential Oils: Natural Insect Repellent for Dogs" by Nayam Morag. This gives good explanations of several EO. At the end is a recipe for a dog lotion. We use it twice a week instead of the other sprays. It is potent and lasts longer. I love it but some people do not like neem oil. I have siberian huskies. Long fur and lotion don't go well together, I make mine a spray. The aloe needs to be INNER FILLET. They do lick it. If you use a thick inner fillet you will get a lotion. If you use a liquid inner filet (like the drinkable kind) you get a spray. I have already used this EO blend in the base of my other flea and tick sprays. To this recipe I added: rose geranium, palo santo, and rosalina EO.

I love your videos thank you for making them. One thing I’ve done for years to save money, the inside panel of the shower curtain is a vinyl. After a few months it gets mildew on the lower inside edges and I used to spray it weekly to clean it. I got tired of that and replacing it a few times a year. I bought the water proof one and cut it 6 inches below the rings, attached Velcro to lower and upper portions. Now I can take off the lower edge and throw it in the washing machine with bleach and I don’t have to replace it or keep spraying it. Attaching after washing is so easy just Velcro it back on.

I've been making my own soap for several years now. I don't use the scentsations (I like unscented laundry soap), and I add 2 bars of Zote soap along with the Fels Naptha. Cost for me is 25.00 a year. I use 2 TBS a load, and it's just me.

One of my money savers is canning dried beans. I buy them on sale (near all the dried beans Kroger sells) and can them for a heat and eat side. Also do a custom mix of red, black, pinto, and kidney beans that I use for chili.

I learned to make my own vanilla extract. It’s cost effective and so much better than store bought vanilla. It makes a great gift too!

@@janetbyrne7765 You can make it by putting vanilla beans in a jar filled with vodka. Leave it in a cupboard for 2 or more months. It's wonderful!

Sure! It’s actually so easy. I bought Tahitian whole vanilla beans from Amazon, cut them in about 4 in. pieces and put them in a glass jar, poured in cheap vodka and put a tight lid on. Let that sit for at least a month or so. Gets stronger the longer you wait.

Always look forward to Wednesday mornings when new White Cottage Company videos will be released. Pour me a huge cup of coffee and sit down for my special time with Mary! Love, love, love today’s video with what I would call “quality of live” hacks and recipes. Made some granola yesterday with a recipe similar to the one Mary shared - sooooooo good. I love knowing that the ingredients are healthy and pure - - - no unknown additives. One of my favorite, EASY hacks is to make homemade yogurt = another food item that is a million times more delicious when made at home. I make my yogurt using a gallon of milk and it keeps fresh in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks - although it never lasts that long at my house - HA! I just heat the milk in the microwave - easy! Then cool, stir in a few ingredients, pour into Instant Pot and about 8 hours later - the yummiest concoction I’ve ever eaten. Check out KZfaq videos to see how easy - a church friend taught me how to make it. Sprinkle some yogurt on top - - - culinary heaven! Thanks, Mary! You feel like a dear and treasured friend - - - always enjoy our Wednesday visits! You are so inspiring and motivating!

Here in Ireland I grow 5 plants of rhubarb it's a great plant, it looks after itself and give great harvest every year. A plant can live for over 20-years I make cakes .jam. lemonade .an infused with vodka and vanilla have a Christmas. I use the leaves as a pesticide and mulch you eat the stalks. I just put horse manure on it in the spring

The only tip that comes to mind is using Hydrogen peroxide for fabric stains. I have white couches and when they get a stain I spritz some peroxide on it, let it fizz and rub it away with a cotton rag. Works great!

Also try a new magic eraser with the peroxide. Works awesome.

@@karenhager916 Careful with the magic erasers - they're just very fine sandpaper blocks, so they can rough up fabric, walls, furniture etc., and even remove the finish or paint.

It was wonderful to meet and talk to you, Mary! I love my small White Cottage Co. pitcher! We went to your booth at the Antique Mall and I purchased the upcycled clock that you did…it is proudly hanging in my kitchen! My husband and I had a wonderful 2 days in Ohio! Such a handy woman! I wholeheartedly agree with you Mary, the prices or everything are going up. Our patio furniture needed a new set of cushions. The cheapest replacement I was able to find was at $ 75 for one chair. I needed 4!!! I have have decided to make my own. I was able to find Sunbrella fabric for $ 6.99 per yard. The whole set cost me $ 95.00 plus I was able to make a lumber pillows with the leftover fabric.

Hi Mary- I love homemade Salsa- once you make it you will never buy it again! I use it with chicken dishes and even on pork chops- top with a little sour cream! Here's my recipe: 4 Cups clean, squeeze out the seeds, chopped tomatoes, 1/2 large or 1 small red onion chopped very small (can even grate it), 1/2 cup chopped cilantro (you either love it or not- if not, use celery greens or a little green pepper),1 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt & pepper, 1/2 tsp cumin or less, use 1 small jalapeño to give some heat to your taste (remove seeds if you don't like the heat but want mild flavor) and one last very important ingredient is fresh squeezed lime juice! Should make enough for a couple of dinners or one large batch of nachos! THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO! - Cindy (Oh I forgot, you can add a cup of fresh chopped peaches to make a sweeter salsa and put less tomato!)

Hi Mary, love your channel. Here's a fun food tip. I love lemon in my iced tea, I buy several lemons, slice thinly and lay them flat on parchment or waxed paper on a cookie sheet, freeze over night, place them in a Ziploc bag and now you have fresh lemon for your tea, no waste! 😁

Marie here- A Great Tip for lemon Lovers: Buy lemons when in season, juice them, freeze in ice cube trays, then put in freezer bags. Cubes are ready when needed for a meal recipe, in a glass with water, pitcher for lemonade, etc., etc! ;-)

I have gardened often in my flip flops, not ideal, it can get messy. Flip flops are so easy to clean and depending on the material, dry very quickly. Feet are also easy to clean, and it often helps cool me cool off when I'm finished with the dirty work. Mary, yours look so sturdy and cute too, I'll be watching out for similar.

This video was great! I'm definitely going to try some of these! My mom made rootbeer when I was little. Sadly she passed when I was 21 and I didn't have the recipe. It was one of those "magical " things she just knew how to do. I'm also excited about the granola because eating boxed cereal even for a snack isn't very healthy. As for me, I love to make all sorts of things. Candles, jams, cookies (healthy) and even the dogs' food occasionally. I'm a real old fashioned hand crafter so repair and manufacture is my lifestyle ( and I love it).

Say, on the topic of healthy and granola, I do want to share that since grains traditionally used to be prepared in ways ( by very healthy cultures around the world, in their various methods ) which nutrualized the enzyme-inhibitors in grains ( which can result in digestive health and allergy issues and more, go to WestonA.Pricefoundation.org to learn more ), I have some tips to make a better granola. #1: Use pre-sprouted rolled oats ( find at Vitacost.com, it looks the same as old-fashioned oats ) or do your own using whole oats b4 rolling them, OR pre-soak your rolled/quick oats in water with TBS or 2 of whey or yogurt added, for 8 hours-ish. Just enough to wet thoroughly. Then dry slowly in over, breaking up chunks as it dries...a very laborious project ! #2 : Get pre sprouted nuts also on Vitacost or make your own. Much easier to do that with the oats. Get directions from that Foundation's website or " google" : "sprouted, crunchy nuts for snacking" . Don't use things like wheat germ - it goes rancid very fast which is not healthy for you, or add flax B4 cooking granola in oven, as it should never be heated ( it's oils ) . I also like to add anything else better left raw, out of it until after the cooking phase. I use coconut oil for the oil, and honey from bees not fed corn syrup ( which is GMO, too...) which most are nowadays, u have to check with local beekeepers for one that isn't, or use maple syrup or coconut sugar ( I prefer it to cane sugar, which is also a healthier, non-gmo option. Sugar beets are largely gmo now, I heard ). GMO is NOT the same thing as hybrids btw. It's forcefully mixing in things from other "kinds" !

Great wake ups on the ridiculous cost of items like laundry detergent and cereals, as a young wife we had 3 Hugh gardens, at first canning, pickling, and cider making! We were care takers of several 70 acres homesteads. Including an apple orchard. A two acre pond provided fresh fish, and a cousin raised beef! We later on had two large freezers and froze some of our vegetables providing food for the extended family! Including ten foster children over the years! Blessed and safe days!

I was so excited to hear about your successful weekend at the Peddler! What a line of fans! I enjoyed today’s video so much. How practical your suggestions are. I love my garden and enjoy canning immensely! I make my own all-purpose cleaner from vinegar, distilled water and essential oils and it makes our bathroom sparkle AND smell so nice! I’ve never seen someone make root beer before! I’ll have to check that out! I have a grandson who’s crazy for root beer! I also make my own granola like you, however, I’m the only one who eats it, but my recipe is similar to yours. I’ve never used butter before, my recipe calls for a little vegetable oil. After the granola cools I add raisins, craisins, and other dried fruits as available. Reading others’ comments makes me happy to know that we all love similar things plus we bring new ideas to share. Pop's family,originally Pa. Dutch, and from Illinois always made root beer. We would hear them in the night sometimes pop a lid when he added too much yeast. Made snow ice cream and buckwheat pancakes with black strap molasses. Anything to get good nutrition into "the little crappers". Thank you for showing us these savers .

I make that same laundry detergent!! I love it and you are right, it cleans and smells so good. I grow my entire garden in Amazon grow pots...absolutely the best way to grow garden. I have cucumbers, squash, cantaloupe, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, jalapeños...the plants are beautiful even on your deck. If the weather changes the fabric pots have handles and I can move them. Love my garden!! Thanks for your tips

I just checked out Mary’s recipe, found it on the internet/Pinterest. It’s safe for HE washers. 2TBS for a normal size load. Increase by 1-2 Tbs for extra large load. The only differences in the recipes is 3 bars of Fels Naptha and essential oil instead of the A/H fragrance booster, otherwise the same.

Here is something I always do…I alway shred my own cheese. I never buy store bought. My food processor has a shredding blade and it literally takes 10 seconds to do it. I normally will do a bunch at a time and freeze it. It tastes so much better and it melts better! I’m excited to try your laundry soap recipe.

Weed eater skirt, what a good idea! My mom has an old riding skirt that she uses for garden work. I used to think another layer would be so hot but it really would spare your clothing. 👍🏼 Your birds are fortunate! Mine only get suet in the winter.

It was so great to meet you this past weekend, I'm hoping to visit later this year when the Christmas shop you mentioned in a past video. I'm going to make the bird suet this winter. Someone once told me you should only feed the birds in the winter when food is less available so they learn to eat natural items during spring and summer. I feed them and the squirrels all winter, just love sitting at the window watching them at the feeders, better than TV!

Hey! Kindred spirit!! Barefoot in the kitchen in the summer! My hack: homemade mayonnaise made from Trader Joe's organic sprouted tofu.: 3 bricks (1 1/2 pkgs) tofu, 5 TBS organic apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp garlic, scant tsp salt, 1/4 tsp turmeric. I blend in my Vitamix until creamy. Scoop into wide mouth jar--easy! Takes 2 minutes. Works also as a sour cream sub on baked potatoes, veggie topping, etc.

Lol--oh Mary, you brought back memories of many decades ago when my gramps made homemade root beer. He put it in individual bottles and laid the bottles on their sides out on the wood pile. During the heat of the day, we were playing in the yard when the caps began to shoot across the yard at us kids pop, pop, pop! Oh my gosh, to this day I still laugh when I am reminded of it. I grew up helping my dad make his delicious root beer. It was my job to cap the bottles and turn them every day in the root cellar where he stored them until it was ready to drink. Thank you for bringing me back to the good old days with your home made root beer!

The Rootbeer! I have already ordered the extract! I actually stopped the video and ordered it. 😊 My family is whipped about soda. And with things the way they are in the world, I wanted an alternative. Thank you! I do make my own laundry soap. Liquid, but all the other ingredients are the same. Cereal is great recipe too. I'll add that to my arsenal of great finds. I can sew, but I find it stressful. But when up against, it I can read a pattern and make a fairly decent garment. All-in-all a fabulous video. My Dad used to make us homemade Root Beer, such fun memories, thanks Mary! My siblings and I would collect empty glass coke bottles from the beach so he could wash/sterilize them for the batch. He had a hand capper and now & then caps would pop off under pressure! I can still see in my mind those bottles lined up on the back porch as we awaited them to get fizzy and ready to drink.

Loved the video Mary! Here in New Jersey we are dealing with a massive cicada infestation-every 17 years they come up from underground en mass! They are gross! So I’ve been indoors only since early May. One of these days I will mow my lawn and weed my garden either when they finally go away or I get a warning letter from my town that my grass needs to be mowed-whichever occurs first! I do want to try some of these hacks. Thank you for sharing!!

I really appreciate these ideas! I was just moping about müesli being so bland, but didn't know how to make my own. I just mixed oats, sunflower seeds, raisins, glazed pecan bits, craisins, a little brown sugar, dash of almond extract, maple syrup and avacado oil and tossed them together. Wow! Instant improvement! I'm going to toast the oats & nuts next time and bet that will be awesome! Plus, they smell like cookie ingredients! Nice crossover!

Wonderful tips and tricks for making things. Thank you. I did get to meet you Saturday morning at the peddler. Was able to talk to you a few times as well. Picked up some of your candles and Tshirts 1 for me and a couple as gifts for others. Didn't realize it was such a tourist area. Plan on coming back another time. So much to see there. I live in Indiana and its pretty flat here. Was wonderful to see the rolling hills and so much green in your area. Stopped at your booth as well to see in person some of the items I have watched you create/make. Truly enjoy your faith based views and creations.
