Fun fact: Sergio Pablos, the creator and director of the film, was a old disney animator that work on Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan and Treasure Planet. Remember Dr. Dopler from Treasure Planet and Tantor the elephant from Tarzan? He was the character animator for both characters and you can recognize some of Dr. Dopler expressions on Jesper's shocking or panic expressions.

Toy Story 4 was not a bad movie. But this one: the story, the voice acting, the art, the animation, the boundary pushing lighting/shading technique! It should have won. But there were a couple of factors against it. One: it wasn't a major studio (and the "Best Animated Movie" category was created after Disney's Beauty and the Beast got it's Best Picture nod to rubber-stamp Disney and/or Pixar). Two: it came out on Netflix, and Hollywood is still grappling with the idea of non-theatrical release movies. To them, a movie coming out on Netflix is no different than a direct-to-video movie, and it, therefore, doesn't count as a real "movie". It might be a paycheck, and they'll take it; but it's not "cinema" if it never came out in a theater, and, in their minds, the Oscar awards are for "cinema". Getting an Oscar nomination was as much acknowledgement as it deserved (and to some of the Hollywood elite, more than it deserved).

Something Klaus does that a lot of movies seem to be afraid to these days is let the emotional moments sit. All too often I'll be watching a movie, have something genuinely touching happen, only for it to be immediately derailed with a quip or joke or snarky remark. It's like the creators are too afraid to let their audience feel for longer than a couple seconds. As much as I loved Into the Spider-Verse, it did that multiple times and it really marred an otherwise breathtaking experience.

Some of the things I really liked about the film was they got real children to voice the children characters, and it just comes off more innocent and genuine hearing actual child actors voice kids and the other thing was the film does a good job of showing that traditions are great but some traditions can be dropped or changed given that the tradition of hatred between the two families/tribes only brought misery and once they start cooperating and living together their entire community is uplifted.

I love Klaus, it is my #1 favorite Christmas film of all time! When I first laid eyes on the animation, I thought it was a 2D/3D animated hybrid. After doing more research and learning that the style of animation was in fact 2D animated (with lighting, shading, and texture), I was so blown away; I couldn’t fathom it all. Sergio Pablos and his team have taken 2D animation to another level with Klaus and who knows, this style of animation could maybe bring 2D back to the big screens, just maybe.
@bluesapphire170

It’s 2d animation, more precisely, it’s multiple layers of simple colors that get more detailed to look 3D with each one added.Its an incredible animation technique that involves a lot of light direction, it’s extremely time consuming but it’s so worth it. There’s a detailed behind the scene of the animation I think you should check out, it’s really lovely. This movie is nominated for an Oscar by the way, correct me if I’m wrong but it’s for best animation.

I liked your discussion at the end there. Pretty interesting conversation. Let me throw in this little piece. I've seen the other side of tradition: where you create a tradition in an attempt to artificially recreate the emotions, or a moment from the first time - to recapture that lightning in a bottle. Occasionally it works, usually it falls flat. But one of the inherent problems with Traditions is that, over time, what worked so well at the start - the way "let's do it this way this time" worked at first turns into "let's do it this way because this is the way we've always done it." And you even see that in Klaus. The town is at war because "that's the way we've always done it! You don't want to disrespect that legacy of hating half your neighbors, do you?"

well put, much like the feud where the townspeople don't even recall how it started in the first place it's the same with Christmas. People forget what it's supposed to be about, it's now about the stuff not the community...to the point where we'll fight each other in stores to get that present...where's the togetherness. So if people decide to forge new traditions I'm all for it

I don't think Christmas movies (at least the filmmaking) had any charm anymore after 90s (take Home Alone and Santa Claus series example). However Polar Express was the only movie in 21st century that did managed to pull some strings in my heart. Klaus is the only exceptional movie after so many years since Polar Express that managed to make me go up on a roller coaster ride. The introduction itself is really interesting starting off with the letter and not to mention that nostalgic feeling of 2d is blissful. Jasper's introduction kinda reminded me of Milo's introduction in Atlantis but I guess we're all thankful that both these characters are polar opposites. Jasper's and the teacher's romance was not forced and still manged to be great, they gave a good origin to Klaus with minor mystical element. The scene where the kid got the frog as gift is really beautiful and Margo was a cute child. I'm ngl, the rivalry between both clans was interesting and the little happy version of Romeo and Juliet that binds the clans. All in all, I'm glad you guys enjoyed it cause this movie deserves all praises. Also for Christmas movies I would like to recommend Jingle All The Way, Home 2 & 3 and Arthur's Christmas. For normal suggestions I would like to recommend *Legend of the guardians: owls of Ga'Hoole* (the art style is on same level as Rise of the guardians, the actions are great and so is narration), *The Adventures of TinTin* (this is like a mixture of Sherlock Holmes and Pirates of the Caribbean but totally original and entertaining. Not to mention the unique style), *Brother Bear* (all I can say is not only does this introduce beautiful landscapes but great message on brotherhood, the art style is just like Atlantis and Treasure Planet), *Meet the Robinsons* (a really motivating movie is all I can say) and Hercules (I know you've seen it with Tim James but I'd like your reaction with Brush one day) and Sindhbad.

I love this hidden gem of a movie. I watched it on a whim when it first appeared on Netflix. I did not think I was going to love it sooo much. I don't know why more people don't know about it. It's so amazingly well done.

Even though I know how this movie went, every time I watch a reaction I just bust put crying multiple times throughout the video😂 The storytelling is just so well done and it keeps your attention every second of the way. I really love this one.

what james said about doing a thing to receive something and it becoming a habit is actually very true! I have adhd and it was impossible for me to find the motivation to work out until I started "rewarding" myself with a tv show. Basically I would only watch said show while working out and it became a habit for me to work out! I actually started looking forward to working out bc of the show lol! That stuff really works and it's usually recommended by therapists!

My ONE complaint about this movie is the obligatory Liar Revealed scene. The way it goes down doesn’t make sense to me with all the individual effort he put in and the starting place of the other two- one a silent hermit and one bitterly saving to leave and y’all are like how dare you put in work to leave this place that also made it better than you found it? It doesn’t grok and it goes on too long. But aside from that beautiful wonderfully written movie that more people should see.

They weren't mad he put in effort to be able to leave, but for not being honest to them, and tell them. Even if he did start out in order to get home, and changed his mind over time; if you don't tell your friends over time, it'll give an impression that you were never a friend rather than someone exploiting them for self-gain.

Their issue was with him not being clear about his intentions of creating the change he did. Even though we know that he was starting to enjoy being there, all they knew at the time was that he got a job done and was lying to everyone's face. Imagine a quiet person finally coming out of his comfort zone because of the push from a new friend only to find out that the friend's intentions were purely for their benefit and they didn't actually care about you or the personal things they trusted to share with you. Plus his plan revolved around children so it makes him a bigger jerk to find out that he exploited children to get that job done. So I get why they were hurt but I watched the movie 2 years ago so I don't actually know how long that anger they had towards him lasted.

While i think that the liar reveled trope is overused and cliche, i think the reason it works in this case is because it’s about trust and the trust between the characters was broken because Jasper wasn’t honest and upfront about his intentions so it appeared like he was being manipulative (which he was originally)

@@crunchychicken2 He's a whiny, smooth-talking city rich kid that has been dumped into a town that everyone in his post has run away from, he starts out very vocal about how crazy the place is and how he needs to GTFO, and then he not only stays but starts a letter-based system of rewards and I'm guessing refuses to let anyone into the actual office because if he DID literally anyone would see the goal marker that takes up an entire wall. The fact that both of these characters, who have themselves been trying to get out/stay away from this place, had NO IDEA there was any kind of scheming behind his actions is either monumental blindness and stupidity, or bad writing. It's the only bit of bad writing in the thing, but it is still bad writing. There's plenty of ways that scene could have happened that would have been emotional and made sense with the flawed and changing characters we have been presented, taking into account where they started and where they have ended up. Instead they were lazy.

The coolest thing about this is while I was in college studying Animation we heard about this project while it was still in production and one of my professors got access to see some of the behind the scenes work that the animators did for this film. We were learning about Sergio Pablos at the time and it was so cool to see the amazing things they were doing for this film before it was even released! After I graduated I was ecstatic to finally see it on Netflix!
