I've had the same type of results. Found a well-beaten trail, did a little work to move a stand into that vicinity, utilized a natural broken branch that overhangs the trail, scraped it up a bit. I literally have video of a buck peeing in it...and lots of frequent visitors. Awesome!

The lands you hunt are very different from our farm in Southwest Minnesota. We have very open areas up here on the Buffalo Ridge and the Orange army always makes problems for our farm during gun season. I myself am a naturalist and a green builder so thats how I run my farms. It is more difficult and sometimes my food plots are not perfect. But they do hold the deer and our farm is one of those that naturally grows a deer herd in the fall. The biggest problems we have are the neighbors who hunt our property line and shoot into our farm. Did you know that in Minnesota that you can shoot into another farm to kill a deer. And if you do not have your farm legally posted that person can walk on your farm to retrieve the dead "poached" deer. Last year the "orange army' shot a doe on the neighbors. should of been down in ten feet but it ran a half a mile from where it was shot onto our farm and the orange army thought I would let them go get it while four pickup trucks were posted on all access around the farm waiting for me to go find his doe and push my farm. I spend a lot fo time on this farm making it a bow property. And still the orange army tries to mess it up. Out here in Lincoln County MN during gun season I will have to watch thirty men pushing the neighbors farms while pick up trucks race around the section shooting our of windows at the deer that they bump. Its a sad state of hunting our here. But everyone knows to stay the Xuck off our farm now. They know I won't take the abuse. The problem is we have no game wardens out here. anyway.

It will depend on the row spacing of the beans (IMO). A tight canopy may only allow rye and radishes. A more open canopy may allow an earlier seeding of brassicas.

Hi Steve! Glyphosate is a broad based killer, 2-4D is a broadleaf specific herbicide and holds MUCH more power to kill broadleafs. Common ag mix...2-4D kills broadleafs that Gly will not.

Look into the notill system. Spray Seed rye Next spring spray seed buckwheat Then sprayed in August and use more rye- oats mix. Rocks become a non issue

Hi Casey if they told you that they misunderstood you. You can spray all the Glyphosate you want over the seeds and it will not harm them in any way. Glyphosate is a post emergent. It will only kill plants that are already growing, not seeds. I am sure they just misunderstood the question... BTW, been doing this for 2 decades ☺️ With zero failure. Will do it again with roughly 15 acres of my own plots this year.

Hi Jimmy, you sure can...but only when they are about to turn and the soybean leaves allow sunlight to hit the germinating brassica. So you just have to watch the timing. Will be a great 1-2 punch for you! Can over-seed heavy rye in September on a portion too! Deer will love the fresh young rye growing in the beans...

Same problem I had this year as well. Buckwheat never managed to get over 6-8" in height and the weeds took over. I'm planning to mow and bag it this weekend. Lightly disk and plant. Then hit it with RU. Hopefully that will salvage my plot!

Tilling is also about time. There are ways to get the same results if planned properly. Tilling dries the soil, opens the land for possible erosion, exposed more weed seeds and most of the time folks are discing in weeds or summer crops, as opposed to planting something that was building the soil. No till is by far better than tilling for food plots, either with no till equipment or using my ultimate no till recipe. Either way tho, you have to practice effective weed control! Critical in farming and food plotting...

Hi. Mike! I would actually spray immediately, so the chemical soaks right into the root system. As long as you can see the soil...or get seed onto soil...you may really enjoy a mid August Brassica planting. I would actually spray now, seed in mid August and spray again at the same time if needed. The rye may actually be too small to get thru the thatch. In hindsight, always better NOT to mow, because it puts a layer of thatch in the ground this time of the year to get seed thru. So the Brassica may give you a fighting chance because the seeds are so tiny...may be able to get thru to the ground in a few weeks.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I was going to try to get all the thatch off after it dried a little either by blowing, sweeping or bagging and then dragging the dethather. I just have lawn equipment so starting is interesting.

Mike Immel I went through it myself a bit earlier this year. After spraying twice I mowed all one direction to clear off most of the thatch. I have a good amount of bare soil now. Your challenge may also be compaction if you never broke the ground at all and have a lot of thick vegetation like grass. I used a tooth drag after my second spraying to rip the top soils dead roots and I now have about 1/4 inch of fine soil for a bed. Definitely brought up a bit more weeds/grass but I already sprayed the regrowth again and I’m in good shape. Not ideal like Jeff said but can be done.

@@TheGuyFromWI - I am also from WI! I am hoping dragging the dethatcher rake followed by going over it with the bagging attachment will get the thatch and will allow for better soil-to-seed contact or that's what I am hoping for. All the work put in now should make it WAY better come this time next year. My hope is high but my expectations are low for and great plot this fall but anything is better than nothing.

Mike Immel having a bagger should be a big help. Especially if you haven’t mowed it already and have a bunch of dead compressed thatch on top of the soil. Live and learn, I was bummed I wasn’t able to get my buckwheat in this year for a smother crop. I have the seed and everything, but I’ll be in better shape next season with having better expectations. If it’s your first planting you might want to look into a soil test. Whitetail institute has a test that was about $20 with shipping and I got my results in 48 hours after they received it. Saved me hundreds of dollars on lime and exposed deficiencies that caused crop failure in previous years. I’m looking forward to a better plot this year. Jeff’s advice has been huge.

Definately...you can frost seed any time after Sept 15th to October 1st. You just have to get seed onto the soil. Do not till or disc to plant at this time...you will just create an explosion of weed growth next Spring. Then use Simazine prior to spring green-up, and a combo of 1 pint per acre of 2-4D and 2 quarts per acre of Gly 2-3 weeks after spring green up.

When planting my plot, if you were unable to get buck wheat established and you've killed your plot, should you just broadcast your seed or will the soil be to hard and dry for it to take? I can lightly disc but that refers back to your weed issue. Thanks Jeff.

Boy that really depends...in most cases yes, in particular when planting the big seeds. In some cases there is too much weed trash for Brassicas...just depends on type of weeds and overall % of buckwheat

I would plan on adding around Labor day heavy...clover doesn't tend to catch up this time of the year

Depends on your sprayer rate. There is not set amount. I use a 40" boom with 2 nozzles on the back of my ATV at about 7-8 mph. That will use 25 gallons to spray 2 acres. You need to figure out your coverage rate and then add chemicals

Tough call. Of you can see the ground pretty easily you can spray right now, and seed and spray again in mid August. If the weeds are too thick, you may want to till now, then spray in 3-4 weeks while broadcasting seed on the same day with a high quality cultipacker like the Packermaxx

Winter rye is cereal rye. Never plant rye grass. I made that mistake years ago planting buck on the bag seed it took two years to kill the rye grass! That stuff is worse than weeds.

H Aaron I haven't had that happen before? Definately keep the weeds down and the soil will be all set to broadcast seed in in August 👍

I dont know if this will help you bit when we plant buckwheat we cut a evergreen tree down and drags over our food plot to cover that up so our birds dont get it all
