Growing shrubs and trees for deer and wildlife is easy, if you follow these decades-proven rules of planting. However, let the planter beware! If you do not follow these common but often ignored planting steps, your risk of failure will be extremely HIGH...

We planted a willow screening here in WI and watered every 2 days through the drought last year. We got about 70% success on 500 shrubs. The survivors are looking good this year though!

In SE,WI, red osier dogwood grows great, however the deer just attack it. I now cage all my shrubs. Tube all deciduous trees, the bucks are merciless.

We have been planting trees all over our property. Apples persimmons pears chestnuts oaks. We planted rod this yr and alot of silky dog woods as well. Plus we got alot of trees from our county water and soil conservation. Great place for trees

Man has food plot failed this year that heat dome hit WV and the seeds I put down and plot I sprayed…still dirt and we have had a week of rain. I missed the call tonight and I’m kicking myself had family issues couldn’t get away.

Hey Jeff, could I get your thoughts on if I should put my mineral mix out for this month. I put it out monthly since the season ended but curious if I should continue it for July and August. And thoughts?

That's perfect Alex! Especially right before Fall that fencing is 100% necessary... Sounds like you are getting a LOT done this year...I bet very rewarding!!

Great points Jeff. It wasn't until I went from 300 trees/yr to 30 and gaged them that I was getting a return for my efforts. Appreciate your channel very much.

Jeff how far away should I put corn from each other and when should I start
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 25 күн бұрын
Hi Dylan! It's almost too late to plant corn. 26"-30" spacing for rows and seeds should be roughly 8-12" apart. We've planted as late as July 5th with great rain and an 85 day corn variety.

If I may add, I believe choosing a cultivar that will grow tall enough that they can't reach the top is necessary for red osier. Otherwise they will just stand there and eat it to death. You would never be able to remove the fence on short varieties in my area.

Do you necessarily have to protect seedling oaks from deer? Or do they avoid it for more preferable browse?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 25 күн бұрын
That greatly depends on the location and how much other browse is available. For example in some areas white pines aren't touched...in other areas you have to cage them. Oaks are the same way. And if they are near a food plot then they have to be protected just about anywhere.
