You are the man! Surgery yesterday and back to work the next day. Really appreciate the different options you provide. We are "absentee" owners so time can be at a premium. Our neighbor sent us pictures of the Egyptian wheat we put in for screening and the buckwheat we put in as soil builder. Getting anxious to get back to the property and start utilizing your fall food plot concepts. All of the "cheap summer help" (family) are requesting WHS ball caps in exchange for their labor. Be safe and let your incision heal.

I have 25 years doing this planting & replanting. Alot of good advice & if people have alot of deer pressure u start with the fast growing annuals backed up like u said with the grains later. I've had great success putting buckwheat in places that yield weeds but 2 years of buckwheat back to back seems to choke them out. When I was 10 I had a 105* temp on the 1st day of spring. I had surgery for a ruptured appendix! Open incision for a week & had to miss 1 month of school. What doesn't kill u only makes u stronger. Alot of deer would have been better off if I wasn't around more than 10 years, ha haha 😅.

Dont bust a stitch ! Watching vid on lunch break.....just south of the midpoint in alabama here ( 110 heat index here today beatin me up ) in bottom of the black belt.. Season opens mid oct but i usually dont hunt til mid nov due to heat unless i catch a good cold front...october cold fronts and the last of the white oak acorns have been good to me thru the years..i usually put down first layer of rye with first rain in oct...wait 2 weeks and overseed another layer...2 weeks and get a 3rd layer in...rut here isnt til mid jan it kicks off...hoping to have plots big enough next year to be able to plant half brassica blend and half grains...dont think brassicas can handle the browse with current plot size...thinking bout adding in some clover to the rye this year...thinking clover as a legume can help provide nitrogen for the rye due to fertilizer cost...any thoughts on clover and rye mix ? Trying to get a little more attraction value...at same time seed need to be small cuz no buckwheat to lay on it...no implements to til...they kept rye mowed down last year , so it never got tall and stemmy til spring when i killed it. Everything good so far, normally full of doe all summer...appears like a ghost town down in there atm..looks like i made plenty of room for bucks to shift onto me this year...

Hi Mike! You can spray 1 quart per acre before decent rain and you will set it back...but not kill it. If it's followed by drought youncan damage it pretty badly but typically it recovers better than ever. And thanks a LOT!! Really appreciate you watching

Jeff, first off, thanks for the big boost brassica blend. I ordered last week and hopefully it arrives soon. Super excited to see the results. Speaking of that, with the extreme drought here in WV over the last two months, do you have any recommendations if the drought continues into early fall? I’m going to plant the brassica blend in early August if rain is forecasted, but with the buckwheat I planted, it had one rain, germinated and just withered away. Is rye the best option for dry weather? I’d rather have something green for the fall than nothing at all. Anything green would be a better attractant than the surrounding properties. Just praying this weather pattern changes soon. What a frustrating spring and summer 😫

2-4D will hurt germination of some seeds. There is a chart in the label that will tell you how long you have to wait until you can plant. 2-4D and Roundup on the first spraying and only roundup on the second a month later at seeding time is a great recipe. 2-4D and Roundup offer different modes of action. Basically a boxer that mixes up his punches.

Buckwheat, oats, peas, beans will be 4.5-5.5. Rye will be 5+ depending on how much you're putting down. Switchgrass and brassicas will probably be better around 1-1.5 in my experience; I'd rather have to go back over than run out early (especially with switchgrass).

What seed rates are you doing the radish, buckwheat, pea mix? The buckwheat I put in (I thought was going to be before rain) still hasn't germinated where it was about 2'+ high this time last year, so I'm thinking I need a plan in place in case I have to just treat the area like a bare soil new plot in a month.

Gonna plant end of September I may buy your blend and some winter wheat. But I do have to ask. You said glysophate won’t kill clover. I haven’t tried it but I was under the impression glysophate kills everything. I spray 41% glysophate from tsc on my fence row and I have a old cemetery on me and it kills every thing. Including little trees. Lol.

I am seeing a weeks worth of 40% rain in our 10 day forecast. Labor day weekend seems to be about the right time for my zone 7 West Texas area. I plan to try frost seeding this winter with clover and see if I can get that to work. We always seem to get one or two inches of snow during the winter, its just a matter of timing. I believe your time frame is later than we r up here in MN. I've planted brassica for a # of years. This year I waited until the middle of May to plant wheat. I wanted a summer cover crop & the doe with fawns need it. Mid -August to late I will put in my brassica blend. This could freeze in late November. The big problem with planting too early is having your plot mature too early in the south is bulbs underground can rot & a rotten egg & turnip r one of the same. I suppose the same could be said about a radish too. U sound like u r well on your way to success. The prep is most of the work like painting a room. Good fortune to u 👏.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 жыл бұрын
Because it's attractive when young in the early Fall, at a time when all the weeds and natural greens are dying or dry. It also grows quickly with minimal tillage. Not a greatbstand alone Fall crop but great within a mix 😊

Excellent information Jeff (again!). QUESTION - I have completed weed control for no-till approach, yet ground is hard in nature (a component of clay)....do you still feel confident in broadcasting directly onto soil in advance of rain OR do you do another 'step' with hard ground? Thanks!
@stevoky
@stevoky 2 жыл бұрын
I have the same conditions. Instead of tilling I just used a drag to loosen the top 1/4 inch a little then seeded. Then each year your ground will loosen up a bit as the turnips and tillage radish do their job. Oh I only had to do this the first year. And also the Buckwheat you sew next June will protect that soil and help prevent that baked crust you have when your getting that first year of spraying as well.

Can oats be substituted for the top dress of rye in September? This is in North Carolina. The coldest month is January with an average low of about 30°F. I’m having a hard time finding winter rye locally and shipping costs almost the same as the seed.
@joeystalin4044
@joeystalin4044 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but the seed is larger, so it won't get rained in as easily as rye. Nor is it more soil tolerant. Good soil--try top dressing wheat (smaller seed so better for throw/grow). But average-to-poor soils stick with oats and rye if you can get it

Hi Jeff: I have 2 food plots that I put buckwheat in earlier this summer. They are about 50% weeds, 50% buckwheat. Am I better off terminating everything with glyphosate and 2,4D right now so I have open soil going into mid August or do I hope the buckwheat out competes the weeds. The buckwheat is about 3 ft tall right now. If I terminate, should I brush hog the buckwheat down before spraying so I reach the lower growing weeds. Thanks.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Roland! I'm assuming you have a lot of open soil exposed? I would actually spray now and plant in a couple of weeks into a weed free plot. My Fall power greens mix is a lot more tolerant of minimal tillage with the radish and buckwheat taking of very fast, followed by the tillage radish with appreciable rains. Either way though...brassica blends will do great as well! I'd feel better fully neutralizing the weeds...

Hi Jeff, if I have low Ph sandy type soil for my food plot and this will be my first ever try at planting (Gladwin, MI area), would you recommend your buckwheat no til, no drill method or would you recommend putting in a soil type builder of food and then in later years go with how your buckwheat no til planting method once the soil has improved? Thanks and hope you feel better soon!

Hi Greg! The buckwheat IS likely the best soil builder you can by 😉 It builds soil and smothers weeds while also being easily planted into. There is no other crop or combination of seeds that can do that, unfortunately. Here is an article I wrote for the QDMA a long time ago discussing the results for soil building with buckwheat, rye and clover. www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com/blog/whitetail-food-plot-success-on-poor-soils Sometimes folks try to over complicated things and sell seed they can call a proprietary blend just to make money. When it simply boils down to using buckwheat and rye 😊 Check out the results in that article!

I commend you on putting out postings the day after surgery. I'm in central Missouri. My food plots are white clover mixes. We are having an epic hot summer and rain has been below normal. My clover is holding on but is going dormant. The long range forecast is that rain will return in August with seasonal temps. My question is, should I let my clover recover and fertilize it or would it hurt to drill in some brassica's? Let's assume that we get moisture. If the drought persist, my question is irrelevant. This is the 3rd year for my clover and I have a really good stand. Clover stays green in this part of Missouri well into November and even December depending on the weather. I wanted to mix it up a bit with some variety but I'm not sure with the heat and drought stress that this is the year to do it. Your thoughts?

We just had 40-50 acres logged and they left a mess. Huge limbs and debris everywhere, small trees down, don't get me started. Question...If I forest mulch it all will it want to come back as timber?. It's all clay and slopping downhill so I want to stop erosion as quick as I can.. But I would like to make it into pasture, crop field, etc. Would it be best to just bulldoze and flatten it and then try to put something down? When it was forested the pH was 4.9 to 5.9. And yes, I want game as well. I'm looking at the 20 year picture to leave something to those who will come after me. And glad to see you up and moving, surgery to remove something you don't use sucks. Don't get me started.
