Got my last plot version 2.1 in two and half weeks ago in northern Wv. Thinking about walking through this weekend and adding buckwheat and tillage turnips just too see what it does and how it responds. Interestingly enough a dirt plot with nothing on it has been blanketed with deer tracks. This year has been different and I’ve stayed away from the property and it checked cameras as much as past years for various reasons and the one watching the plot shows a nice deer population using the plot daily. Funny thing is when it was just dirt is the first bucks I have ever had on the plot. Hopefully things will produce well and this season will be great

Yeah, I chucked 150 lbs of winter wheat and winter rye on a new property the last week of Sept. In NY. All October I had deer on it and shot a nice buck mid Nov over it. This year I had time and i have several great food plots growing, but in my mind I keep thinking I got all I wanted out of a fall foodplot last year at 1/10 of the cost and work.

I brush cut and tilled by hand 2 plot areas and a long strip that curves through between them. Don't have the equipment to really do it properly right now so I seeded with a hand seeder and broadcast the seed and raked the soil over it in the plots. Then broadcast wheat on the strip between them. Probably go back and frost seed the wheat again. All of it was done early August. Rain was in the forecast and we only got half an inch or a little more just after. Then we got another shot of rain a week later and we just had approximately half an inch more rain and sadly it has been so dry this summer that I still don't see much germination. Alfa alfa, clover and chicory in the plots haven't had enough moisture to germ. It's not all bad though. At least I can reseed in the spring and be ready to go when the moisture is there and reseed maybe in July if there is rain. Still haven't done a soil test but I can tell a little lime and nitrogen wouldn't hurt.

Nice. That 10 pointer sounds like a real bruiser. How much do you figure he weighs? My plots haven't germinated yet. I seeded early august because there was no rain in July right before rain was in the forecast but we only got 6/10 of an inch and then a 1/10 or 2 a couple days later. Then it was dry for almost 2 weeks. I am hoping it will come up in the spring. If not I will just reseed the alfa rack seed mix in the spring.

Hi Jeff, here in southern Indiana we had the ground all ready for planting brassica during Mid August but haven’t had any rain in the forecast for the past week or so. With the very hot weather we’ve been having we were scared to plant anything right now. The frost date is always usually right around the middle of October. Do you think it would be alright to wait another week or so and pray for some rain to come in and plant the brassica or plant something else?

Hey Jeff! Great info as always. I have one quick question. I have a new property that I am now managing and have been doing an inventory this year. It seems as though there is a large difference in buck to doe ratio. I have about 3 bucks to ever one doe I have seen. I know it is early in the season and that is likely to change during the rut, but was curious if this is something I should be concerned about, or is this as good of a thing as it appears? Thank you in advance. I always appreciate your input.

when you spray Clethodim for the grasses, do you need to add a surfactant like a crop oil concentrate, or will it still be effective without the added surfactant recommendations? I am trying to do a wheat food plot that is also mixed with clover seed. In the spring, am I understanding that spraying with the Clethodim will kill the wheat and rye, but leave the clover safe and unaffected?

Im in Roanoke area. I had great luck last year spreading on Sept 21. I had deer all over it during October and first week of November. So it depends if you bowhunt or not. If not, plant a lil later. Id say two or three weeks before u want to hunt. I like the idea of Jeff's rye layering based on my experience last year. It was great for a month or so, then the attraction just wasnt there. I was also planting ground that eventually gets super wet and I only fertilzed about half the recommended rate.
