This video will show you how to lay out, notch and bend an angle iron frame on the Whitney Bender. the Whitney bender is only used to notch angle iron. the maximum material dimension of the notcher/bender is 2" x 2" x 1/4".
Never force the machine and always use caution around sharp metal and moving parts. you don't want to get pinched or cut on your material or the machine. report any missing or damaged equipment to the Shop staff immediately.

Very nice and clean procedure! I may have to try a similar bend (in a vice, though).

This is a great video. Thanks for sharing the details. This video inspired me to purchase a used Whitney bender/notcher setup that I found locally on Craigslist (just happened to be one for sale only 10 miles from my house), and I'm using it on a project -- to make 32 rectangular "frames" to hold treads for a steel stairway -- and it's not only time-saving, but the results are better and more consistent than when I've done similar frames by cutting each 45 and welding the corners. After watching the video again, I saw the instruction sheet mounted to the side of your tool stand. I was wondering if you have a digital copy of that instruction sheet you might make available. I read through the comments and see that someone else asked the same... and you replied that you don't have a copy of it. If that tool is handy, could you take a photo of it for me? I'd like to recreate it and post it to mine, as I share shop space (and tools) with a bunch of people, and that info would be great to have posted on the notcher/bender itself. If possible, please send a photo of it to mightyfabpdx (at) gmail (dot) com. Thanks again for the great informative video (and inspiration).

Great video, I just picked up one of these outfits. In the video it's hard to see the text on the sheet you have on the front of the machine. Any chance of getting a picture/details or something?

I don’t have a copy of the text handy, but it illustrates what I explain in the video. It gives two examples of laying out a piece of angle for notching & bending. One describes how to achieve a desired outside dimension, and the other illustrates layout for achieving a desired inside dimension (as though you were going to build the frame around an existing rectangle or square). But the basic principle is that approximately 2x wall thickness of your angle is added to the outside dimension of your frame. For example: if you start with a 48” length of angle with a 1/8” wall thickness, lay out your notches at 6”, 12”,12”12”,6”, the resulting square frame would measure 12 1/4” outside to outside and approximately 12” square inside. If your wall thickness was 3/16”, the resulting frame should measure 12 3/8”, and 1/4” material would result in a 12 1/2” frame. If you wanted a frame that measured 12” outside dimensions, you would subtract 2x the material thickness from each segment. Actual dimensions may vary depending on material stretch, etc. This isn’t a precision machine, but it builds ready to weld frames fast and is as repeatable as you are with your layout and operation. Hope that helps, and good luck with your new machine!

This is a Roper Whitney No. 455 Combination Angle Iron Shear, Notcher, and Bender, it’s still available for purchase new from a number of dealers; do a quick internet search and you’ll see it’s going for around $3000 new. You can also purchase the components individually and mount them to a bench. I'm sure there are used deals out there too if you hunt around. I find the notcher and bender are the more useful tools, especially if you already have another means of cutting the material to length and/or have limited shop space. I find the shear (not demonstrated in the video) can cause a bit of distortion in the material if you don’t dial it in right. But if you want to make a bunch of angle iron frames quickly, this is a great time saver.
