The word "Latin America" was created by the French in the early 1800s as a way to bring Spanish America into the French imperial fold. A racist Euro-centric term created specifically to deter all non Latin-Romance language speaking and non-Catholics living in South America (First Nations, Asians, Africans, Protestants, Northern Europeans, etc) from developing an identity within South America.

Most Latinos are Democrats. If your ancesters were from Mexico, the SW part of the United States, Guatamala....etc you are a Democrat in most cases. If your daddy came from Cuba but never read books by historians and economists you are likely to be a Rupublican. Another group many people also overlook are Latinos from southern Mexico. Though they are Latinos, there is a heavy European (Spain) influence, so that is another entire subculture of Latinos altogether who may have immigrated here as well, who are also overlooked.

As a Latinx Gen Z Puerto Rican male, I don't understand why some Latinos want to forget where they come from because they think that they have to please the white man. White Nationalists and white supremacists groups are not going to open up their minds, hearts and arms to embrace you. I am a retired US Army MSG with 22 years of service and since I came to the US at the age of 18.5 years I never forgot where I came from and I assimilate to the American culture with no problems. I am white and I don't have a heavy accent, but I remember back in the day when I would meet people in the military that were obviously Hispanics and will only speak English with the worst accent possible (you could tell that this people grew up way in the country) and they wanted to pretent that English was their natural language. After meeting people liked that I would never socialize with them because you didn't have an idea of what agenda they might be holding true and what their allegiance was compared to a neutral loyalty to the US and their country of origin. Anyway I never needed people like that to advance my career because everything that I achieved in the military was a reflection of my hard work and not kissing the white man @ss. I am proud to be an American as well that I am proud to be Puerto Rican as well

There it is! She got it, assimilation and a feeling of closeness to white power is what drives many Latinos to Trump. It's honestly super disappointing, especially when I see the black community vote in such a unified way for their best (although not perfect) interests. I'm Latino, but there is something to be said about internalized colonialism in my community and the privilege of many of us being nearly white passing.

Latinx are Latinos with African descent. Because there are white Latinos and for ever some of them ignored and outright discriminated against the darker skinned in there communities. The same way white Americans discriminated against the Black population. Many Latinx from even Cuba have a different experience than the lighter skinned Cubans. Brazilians are Latinos and not considered Hispanic (Spanish speaking) because they speak Portuguese.
