I think a lot of the book of revelation is written in code and is describing our current and future spiritual transformation. The neurobiological interpretation works out as well well you consider them all stemming from the 12 cranial nerves (represented by the metaphor of the 12 tribes of Isreal). 144 also adds up to 9 which is the number of completion and the number for humanity. 144000 being the number when humanity/kundilini ascends versus 666 (also 9) being the number for humanity/kundabuffer descending (when the energy goes down and out versus up and in).
