I still remember the first time I entered a temple… I was about 3 or 4 years old… There were 4 giant statues right at the entrance when you went in. And they had really fierce looking faces… It scared the bejeebers out of me. You probably know what I’m talking about… So who are the Four Heavenly Kings?

I found these 4 kings story so fascinating. All 4 kings on the painting are having different colors on their faces and representing East, South, West, and North. Cultures, traditions, and history are getting precious each and everyday while some schools and country leaders are no longer preserving history as essential to younger kids. I found similar artful paintings in Aomori prefecture, Japan 😊 Please keep going with such great work telling ancient stories.

What I am familiar with is from the folktales of the Journey to the West. According to the novel, which has a basis on general Chinese folklore, the Four Heavenly Kings are commanders of the celestial army. While not in battle, they are stationed at each of the Four Heavenly Gates as guards.

I know that it’s mythology but I thought this was interesting. 45,000km wingspan would make the bird too large to exist on planet earth. The distance from Wellington, NZ to London, UK is only about 18,000km.

Hrm… holding a pagoda… that reminds me of 毘沙門天. (I’m familiar with this guy through the Japanese 七福神.) Are they the same person? Also, I know that many deities still revered in Japan today have Chinese origin, such as 布袋, 壽老人, 福祿壽, 辯財天, and 大黒天. You think a crossover video might happen someday?

These are the OG 4 heavenly kings. You can see them at any Buddhist temples and they’ve existed for thousands of years. Any subsequent ones in pop culture is named after these guys.
