It is about a fictional Arab chieftain trying to keep his people from listening to rock & roll music, which in this context means both to dance & figuratively shake your ass

A Hassidic Jew and an Arab in a Cadillac back then was not happening. That alone made the video controversial when it came out. The Clash was really good and cool with/about sticking it in your face but in their own way. Those two boys are rocking out!!

Yeah, I always get a kick out of the Arab guy running with the boombox...that dude is on a mission...the way it's shot from a low angle, it's almost like he's running across a trench with a box of ammo...lol...

Well, the natural habitat of Cadillacs is hardly the places where Hassidic Jews and Arabs tend to hang out... There is that... 🤔

It's funny, I never noticed the "Lone-Star Limo" service that The Clash crew were using, but the song is about the religious oppression of the freedom of expression in Muslim countries in the middle-east (Hence the oil derricks)...the "Sharif" mentioned in the chorus is a class of Muslim religious leader...and the video depicts a Hasidic Jew cruising in a Cadillac with an Arab Muslim, which would be unheard of in Israel and the other Jewish/Arab areas at the time...the song is a kind of protest against the divisions that were flaring up, that we could all get along and party regardless of our religious belief...

A couple of my friend were in this video, but they said it was only their feet. I assume it was shot in Texas, because my friends were a bunch from Hill Country.

The Clash was a British punk band. This song was about an incident in Iran after sharia law took over and Western music was outlawed by Muslim leaders. They started playing disco music and a spontaneous street party broke out. The music was so loud they heard it in the mosques. The leader was so angered he called out the national guard to break the party up, but according to the song as soon as the leader was gone the pilots tuned into the music too.

From an article: Casbah, also referred to as “Kasbah” and “Qasbah,” refers to a citadel or fortress surrounding towns in North Africa, particularly Algiers After this song, there have been at least a few seedy punk clubs named The Casbah (various cities including London and San Diego) and they generally host smaller bands and have a very small cover charge... to pay homage to Ian McKay.

I believe "Sharif don't like it" here was supposed to mean "Sherriff don't like it" They may have been concerned that Oil Sheikhs were buying up local law enforcemnt in the late 70s, or summat. Punk rock was frowned upon in those days ;) :D

Politically and culturally probably the most important and influential band of the punk genre. Rooted heavily in ska and reggae they crossed a wide range of musical tastes. This song concerns the middle eastern fight over the money machine that is oil.
