We all know that Captain America was frozen during World War II and thawed out years later. The strange thing is that there were many appearances by Cap in the comics after the war had ended, but before he came back in Avengers #4. So how do you explain that? Who filled in for Steve Rogers as Captain America as he was frozen in ice? There are actually a few people. We're talking about William Naslund AKA the Spirit of '76, Jeff Mace AKA Patriot, and William Burnside AKA the Grand Director in this week's star-spangled Comic Misconceptions!
Every Wednesday, Comic Misconceptions explores the fun trivia, interesting ideas, and mind-blowing theories regarding comic books and the rich history and culture that surrounds them!

This is how you properly retcon something. You don't just say "It didn't happen," you keep to what happened and add more details so that everything makes sense.

Wait, so William Burnside just kidnapped a boy, called him Bucky, and then gave him drugs and told him to go with him on outrageous adventures under the names of dead people, and then slowly drove him insane? What the heck Marvel....

"The Lost Generation" is one of my favorite Marvel miniseries. Now that Marvel Time says that Cap slept not only through the Fifties but also the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties and even the Oughties, I wonder whether there were other "Captains America", official or unofficial, during all those years? I kind of hope there were, and that we might hear their stories some day.

The William Burnside (?) Captain America sounds like a kind of outlet for writers to try out different things which they normally wouldn't, or perhaps couldn't. It's cool how, in the way you described it, he was used to explore themes like fanaticism, ideology and identity. The story where they go crazy and think everyone is a communist is pretty on the nose on what was on the writer's mind at the time! Perhaps some of that is on the same vein as the Incredible Science Fiction #33 story "Judgement Day", considering how difficult it is to pull something like that with a mainstream superhero character. Haven't read those Captain America comics though, so maybe I'm stretching this a bit. Anyway, very good video, thanks!

The Captain sort of reminds of Batman. He is more then a hero, more of a needed symbol. So I can understand why so many people have been him. Good info. As for the MCU, I'd say no. One of the good tihngs about it, is they try to keep it without retconing too much. They try to keep it simple, if they did ANYTHING. Maybe the Captain mesuem could have a say someone did take his role after he was frozen.

Captain reminds me more of The Phantom (or Black Panther but more predominently The Phantom) who was nicknamed: "The Ghost That Walks." because despite dying, he always seemed to come back. In reality it was because someone else keeps taking up the cowl thus creating the mythos.

Fantastic video, Scott! :) Loved it! Can you do a video on Wonder Woman now? I've wanted to be clear on a few things about her. Does WW get her powers from the gods or from the magic lasso and braclets enhancing her warrior training? I've also seen conflicting thoughts on how old WW really is? Tieing in to this video with Captain America, I've seen other sources that suggest Wonder Woman in the 40s was actually her mother Hippolyta. And then there was the Artemis and Donna Troy fill-ins.

***** As always, you've managed to create an awesome video that explains a confusing bit from a character's history and make it super clear. I've known about Burnside for a while now, but I never knew about the other Captains that popped up during Steve's time on ice. I think it's great that Marvel went back and explained that inconsistency, but I think that it is a little bit more complicated than necessary to have three people during that time when one or two would work just as well. As for whether or not I'd like to have one of these Caps in the MCU, I think Burnside would be interesting, maybe for a second season of Agent Carter or a Captain America movie. Even an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. subplot could be interesting.

As always this was a wonderful video. I think that using retcons in comics is part of the creativity and fun of comics. Lets face it that using retcons allows for all kinds of unique plot devices that make unique stuff happen as in the case of Captain America. Comics, I think, are about having fun and being creative and should not be taken too seriously. That being said, I also enjoy when writers strike a balance between the fantastic and logical aspects; neither element being too overarching to the other. In my opinion this is what was done in the Nolan Batman films. Many of the more fantastic elements of the character were gotten rid of and I thought Batman/Bruce Wayne was showed to be very human and knowledgeable about his limits especially in the last film the Dark Knight where he deals with the limits of his own body after being badly hurt.

1st - I agree that Agent Carter should have done something of the sort. 2nd - You mentioned Betsy Ross in this video, which intrigues me further on how often Marvel uses the name Ross... This there a correlation between Betsy Ross, Thaddeus Ross and Everett K. Ross? 3rd - Thank you for your show, I subscribed a few months ago, but I've binged watched the vast majority of your content. 4th - ( the name is pronounced Kebek Steve-o ) ;-)

Awesome, awesome. Within the seconds that it took for you to ask whether we'd like these replacements explored and stating that you'd have found this explored in Agent Carter interesting I wasn't able to think of anything more perfect. They could easily do this in a future season of the show, and not only explore how she deals with it but how media and high ranking officials deal with this kind of situation.

Joshua Williams I remember in Iron man 2, Tony found Cap's shield in his work shop. Did they ever explain how it got there?

I'm pretty sure they didn't. Which means they could totally work that in to something.

Paul Grover Tony had brought all those boxes back from Stark Industries. His father made Cap's shield. It wouldn't be uncommon to see a prototype or something among the rest.

Great piece as always. The What If (Volume 1, Issue 4) that you cited is unique in that it occurs in the main/616 world, not an AU, though I've never been sure whether it was intended that way or just allowed to stand as such once completed. Roy Thomas, who wrote 97% of everything Invaders, later revisited the 'kill the future Presidents' idea in issues of All-Star Squadron with a villain named Ian Karkull. A good actual What If? is Volume 1 Number 44, wherein Steve is not found by the Avengers as in 616, leading to the paranoid 50's Cap and Bucky being revived before him. As to placing other Caps in the MCU? I'm gonna say no, except for Isaiah Bradley, whose grim fate fits the tone of the MCU. I'm a big fan of the replacement Cap stories, but they need time to be explained, time movies don't always have. OTOH, if the X-Men ever enter the MCU, the alternate Caps could be used as part of the Weapon Plus storyline, linking Cap and Wolverine. Myself, I think Peggy and Howard would fight any effort to have someone besides Steve to fill in, plus I think the MCU American government didn't try to hide Steve's apparent death. Good idea not to do all the Caps this ep. That gets a bit dicey.

Rob Morris Yeah, I didn't want to talk about everyone who has ever been Captain America, just people who filled in while he was frozen. And What If #4 is a bit odd because it is canon. I was scratching my head about that for a while. Haha

***** I believe I still have that What If? issue somewhere. I cannot recall whether or not Thomas said in that lettercolumn about the story's canonicity, or a future one, or even if The Watcher stated it in story. IIRC, the story was not presented as an AU to start with. According to the Marvel Database Wiki, while Steve Engelhart wrote the first stories involving William Burnside/50's Cap, Roy Thomas created the idea for him, based on the discrepancy the 50's comics created. marvel.wikia.com/Steven_Rogers_%28William_Burnside%29_%28Earth-616%29#TriviaEdit IIRC, Stan Lee in 1964 simply didn't remember there were any 50's Cap comics when he revived him. One last bit, not pivotal but interesting : In Namor The Sub-Mariner Annual 1 (June 1991), there was a back-up story called 'The Potsdam Objective', set after WW2 and showing how Namor began to distance himself from the surface-dwellers. The William Nasland Cap makes an appearance as the bodyguard of Harry Truman. Namor seems less accepting of the new Cap and the new President than their predecessors than he does in the What If story. The only reason I mention it is, I am hard pressed to say if the William Nasland Cap makes any other real appearances beyond this and What If? V1-4.

Good info. Something that annoys me about Marvel Unlimited is that they don't often keep in the letters pages for old comics. Wish I could read those.

***** That really is a shame in this case. Roy Thomas in particular put out metric tons of info, trivia and perspective in his lettercols.

***** Some other people have came up with this idea before in this comment section, but what do you think about the 50s Captain America making an appearance in Agent Carter? Granted, they can't get Chris Evans to play the exact lookalike, so maybe he could be in the shadows, confounding everybody who thought Steve was dead until it's revealed that the impostor is a psychotic nut.

Hi Scott! I was hoping you would do a video where you explained how did Captain America revived after he got shot, because I have this issue of Siege and the first page says that Captain America was recently resurrected, and I don´t have the comic where he died so I was like wtf?!, and then there is this image of Steve Rogers talking to a bunch of super heros including Captain America.. ? ..and all of this is really freaking me out, because in my country it´s kinda hard to find complete story arcs or specific comics ( like the death of Captain America ) and I wanna know about this stuff. Greetings from Bolivia :)

Multiple Captain America's, good fun. Anything that essentially leads to a mirror match can't be all bad lol. As for him appearing in the MCU, Commie Smasher/replacement/imposter Cap seems obscenely unlikely to be directly transplanted from the comics(unless it was in Agent of Carter or something...in which case do that!), but I think there might be potential for an imposter as a subplot in a hypothetical phase 4 Captain America film- especially if a certain death occurs.
