When you were a kid, sneaking into a rated R movie was a big deal. Everyone had their own tricks, but this author’s was to buy a ticket to a rated G Disney movie, say, Mulan; when the usher turned their back, I would run into a rated R movie like, for example American History X. But it wasn’t always this way - not kids sneaking into movies deemed only for adults, but rather the movie rating system. There was a time when movies didn’t have ratings. So how did we get from there to the current system?

That’s awesome. I think I had a head cannon explanation like that. I was the youngest and felt asking would lower my cred, so I often tried to explain things to myself in a way I could understand, from inference, and muddle along as well as I could! I had a few... noticeable mistakes along the way. But, hey, all that practice was helpful; I’m now a student in psychologist, and picking up on little bitty cues is so dang handy! 😅

The MPAA even took the idea of content descriptors from the ESRB system. Honestly I think the ESRB system is pretty good, but like any ratings system, it’s relatively easy to find folks who ignore it.

I can fix the system (this is all my opinion): E: I think the ESRB is fine with how they handle E rated games; E10+: I think E10+ can allow for more (but not persistent) of the mild swear words. Maybe a bit more violence but not disturbing (such as Fortnite); T: I think they should allow infrequent uses of "f**k" or "motherf**ker" at T, provided the words aren't used sexually; M and AO: Nothing wrong.

What should also be noted is that what rating a film gets is entirely arbitrary, and we actually have no idea who the people are who rate them. So saying the same thing in different ways or context can earn different ratings. The Marx Brothers were also masters of screwing around with the Hays Office, finding ways to either sneak it by or fly it so far over their heads that they didn't get it, which of course the people watching did.
@SaraHouck461
@SaraHouck461 4 жыл бұрын
Yeesh, it's no wonder films have easily been defended as teaching tools that deserve to be shown in schools or for schools (with a cinema being treated as an educational field trip destination in the case of the latter), which is presumably what is meant by arbitrary, as explained by some of the other comments posted. Then again, the system itself was supposedly essential in order to make a particular type of subject like that possible.
@sparkplug1018
@sparkplug1018 4 жыл бұрын
@@SaraHouck461 What I mean by arbitrary is, saying the same thing, but in a different way can get vastly different ratings. Such as "I want to F*** you" between a male and female character, PG-13. Same line, between two characters of the same gender? Rated R more often then not. I mean yeah there's more that goes into the overall rating but that's the kind of stuff that they do. It would be nice if we knew who these people were and what criteria, if any they use to rate a film.

Now it means G, no film is getting rated G anymore, and if they are they're indistinguishable from PG films. Basically, PG=G and R is still R. But PG-13 I dont know. Fuck the PG-13 rating, it basically takes movies that wouldve been R before the rating existed and tones them down to get the PG-13. Also films that should be PG still get PG-13 ratings, because again PG=G, and because filmmakers might toss an f bomb for instance in a PG movie to get it a PG-13. Seems like everything is PG-13 and this is because it's the best rating for marketing. I really shouldn't care about the MPAA ratings, they're supposed to be for overprotective parents, but many good movies get watered down by studios and filmmakers, and even straight up censored, just to get that fucking PG13. It was meant to be for movies like Temple of Doom, Poltergeist and John Carpenter's The Fog, not the Die Hard franchise.

Jaws is a funny case. It's rated PG to this day (movies are rarely, if ever, given new MPAA ratings after release) and yet it contains some pretty realistic blood and gore, not to mention very brief nudity in the beginning of the movie. It's also scary AF, even by today's standards. The blood and gore includes: a partially decomposed severed head with a dangling eyeball; a ( kinda fake looking) severed hand lifted out of a disturbingly small pan containing a woman's remains with a graphic description of the state of said remains; a preteen boy being eaten alive amidst a fountain of bloody water; a partially-off-screen necropsy of a dead shark; Quint's death with all the blood spurting, gurgling and screams of agony and terror; the slowly sinking severed leg with bloody, ragged torn flesh; and, best of all, brief flashes of graphic photographs of actual, real life shark attack victims (when Brody is looking at the book about sharks). And yet this movie has the exact same MPAA rating as Ralph Breaks the Internet.

The original intent of PG-13 was to expand the envelope of PG. But, due in large part to lazy parents who have blanket rules about R movies, the PG-13 rating actually made many movies more conservative so they could slip from R into the PG-13 slot which was seen by marketing departments as a larger slice of the market to be blindly grasped at even at the cost of artistic merit and critical review.(really ruined a large number of movies)

Was a term for when the bartender would cut you off in a way. So they'd stop serving you the 100+ proof stuff and give you eh 86 proof. And over time as things do its meaning changed, and it became a phrase for to kill or get rid of something. At least thats the story I've always heard anyway.

@splaar

The X rating was abandoned in the 1990s and replaced with NC-17 because, due to the lack of a patent on the rating system, the porn industry rebranded the meaning of the X rating. Even still, very few movies are ever given an NC-17 rating.

Part of why the ratings system had to become so was due to not actually the amount of sexual innuendo or nudity, but the increasing violence. Westerns were very popular in the 60s and 70s and became more and more realistic in gun violence. Then horror films came along with similar issues, then bringing movies that crossed the line like clockwork orange and last house on the left with graphic rape scenes that just had to be considered for ratings that only those 18 and above should see. It wasn't till the 80s that swear words were taken into account as to how a film should be rated. As before this blood guts and tits were primarily the problem. Now the rating is very important as the number of busts in seats is set by the age of ticket buyers. So cleaning up the dialouge, or removing all the blood from the injuries could bring the film to a PG rating tripping the box office.

I find it interesting on who decides what is offensive and what rating film should get. It is different country to country. Violence in one country gets a G rating in another it gets a R rating. Nudity will get G or a R depending on the country. All these ratings are subject to a very small group of people so are really of very little use.

You missed one big turn. In 1990, indy thriller "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" was released with a hard X by the MPAA. Independent filmmakers were outraged, as much brutal slasher films were being released by the majors with R and even milder PG-13 ratings.

I remember the whole PG-13 fiasco with Temple of Doom. When Indiana Jones threw that flaming shishkabob through that guy's chest, it was crazy. Even as a kid, I was like "huh, this ain't PG but it's not really R either". So when PG-13 came out, it seemed to make sense. I thought it actually made it easier to market films after that, and easier for me to filter out a lot of the safe, homogenized, formulaic PG garbage .

Well, in a sense they do. Churches make no bones about who they want their members to vote for. And quite often, they urge their members to vote for very self-righteous people who love nothing more than controlling people and telling them what to do. They do this because they must establish how "alpha" and dominate they are. Anything to keep the masses under their thumb. By hook or by crook, they WILL impose their will on the rest of us, until a day comes when we finally have enough and take them all out fish, hook, line, and sinker at the ballot box. Of course, I come from a viewpoint of being both a Socialist and an Atheist.

The ratings system is only voluntary up to the point that every movie released from a studio under the MPAA has to have a rating. Unfortunately, major American theater exhibitors to showing movies without a rating isn't common. The same goes for NC17 rated movies, where some studios won't release a movie with the rating, and the exhibitors won't show them.

And now, every movie that would benefit from being Rated R for storytelling purposes are always shoved out the door toned down to PG-13 to get that target demographic of teens in those seats. PG-13 is the main focus of the entire damn industry now for all the summer blockbusters. They've pretty much killed the R rating and studios seem terrified to try it for fear of losing that PG-13 money making demographic.

I did a senior exhibition on this exact subject what this video misses is the fact that despite the fact the x rating was changed to the nc -17 rating to differentiate film from pornography they never worked to remove the stigmas. This has now become like a new form of censorship where if a movie is rated nc-17 it will almost certainly fail at the box office so as a result films self censor themselves to get the R rating. So essentially the nc-17 rating is broken and is used as a big ambiguous line in the sand that filmmakers aren’t allowed to cross, and more and more violent films are forced into the R rating because they censor themselves to get an appeal from the MPAA. We should get rid of film ratings imo. Films and books are both art but only one of them is rated and censored by a board.

I don’t care what Spielburg or any of them said about it, PG13 was a money move. 12 has as long as I remember, has always been the cut off for children’s fare. Any older and you have to pay as an adult. No kid that age has driver license, which is the only picture ID most people will ever have. For years kids 13 and a little older lied to pay the cheaper children’s fee. After the change, kids 11 and 12 were lying and saying they were 13 just to get in and paying the adult rate!
