THIS VIDEO: Alec Soth rose to prominence in the contemporary photography world in 2004 after the publication of his essay, Sleeping by the Mississippi. His project on Niagara and the couples that go there to get married, cemented his position as an art photographer to watch and collect.
ABOUT ME: The conversations focus on topics related to different aspects of photography including: art, documentary and photojournalism. The discussions explore the personal experiences of photographers and artists and how their work reflects both their internal and external landscape. During the past 30 years I have photographed in over 50 countries for magazines including National Geographic, Time, New York Times and Newsweek. I have held solo exhibitions in New York, London and Paris and my work is showcased in private and institutional art collections around the world.

In the film "Somewhere to Disappear" Alec Soth starts by saying "I feel like there is something in the culture right now, sort of in preparation for the decline of the American empire in a way". That was in the context of his book "Broken Manual" but there are some traces of it in his first book "Sleeping by the Mississippi" and "Niagra" too. Lots to say about this great photographer of our time, you summarized it really well in this video Graeme, loved watching it.

One of my favourite photographers, too. I appreciate his photobook analyses, particularly in respect of what he calls 'difficult' images.

Excellent piece Graeme. Very inspiring and encouraging, in that a body of work in eclectic freestyle photography without a traditional classification can actually end up being accepted as meaningful and acknowledged. I hope the art world continues to” open and pull in” more photographers every now and then.

Let's hope, we seem to be in a very lightweight phase.

Really enjoyed this! You listed a string of female photographers ending with Vanessa Winship. Who were the others?

Most photographers aren't half as smart as they like to think they are. Soth is the obvious exception.
