Who is Elrond? In the first part of this deep dive into Tolkien's lore we look at Elrond's ancestors and early Life in the First Age and early Second Age, so far before the Lord of the Rings took place. This is probably one of the most detailed LotR lore videos out there.
In this part I cover mostly what we find in the Silmarillion and also a bit of the writing process of Tolkien.
This includes King Thingol, Beren and Lúthien, Dior, Elwing, Fëanor, Turgon, Idril, Tuor, Eärendil. We also discuss Thranduil and canon a bit, but also Galadriel, Celeborn and Celebrimbor.
This is Part 1, there will more parts and I plan to also combine all in a one video version, the links will be here:

► Mistakes:
- a lot
- tons of typos
- Sound is maybe not the best (some pop sounds; will be better next part)
- Nature of Middle-earth was not out when I wrote the script.
- 1:40:48 I say that Galadriel and Celeborn leave Beleriand after the fall of Nargothrond, but it should be before the fall of Nargothrond, but around the time of this event.

The (ever increasing) quality and quantity of intensely detailed original analysis and speculation applied by ThePhilosophersGames to specific aspects of Tolkien's histories of Arda brings me such wonderful new perpspectives on the works despite my decades-long familiarity with most of his writings. To me, ThePhilosophersGames has created a virtual curriculum of Tolkien material whose entertainment value vies favourably with Jackson's original trilogy.

@Jermaine Savory Thank you ^^ Much appreciated. It's always very humbling and encouraging, if people write about getting into the Legendarium and reading the books. Much appreciated. PS: I know people don't know and it is absolutely counter-intuitive, but at least for me it's really hard to see replies to older comments. I catch some, but not all, because my comment list in the YT creator studio sorts by newest stand-alone comment, not by newest replies (this feature is needed). So if you answer to a 4 week old comment I have to scroll down a lot to find it. As a result it's almost impossible to find those replies for me, if I don't check old comments manually. In this case I got pinged and saw it this way, but that does not always happen. So if you want to make sure I see a comment, write a new one 😅

I've now listened right through your video twice, and parts several times to pick up extra details. I really enjoyed Part 1 of your latest epic. How enchanting it would be if we could all sit around a log fire evening-after-evening in some Middle Earthian hall or wooded glade, listening to your teachings on the lore of Tolkien; but we're already so lucky to have your videos. Okay, this is very impressive. Long, ambitious, and comprehensive. And this is only the first part, maybe I’m biased but no complaints there lol, we just can’t talk enough about Elrond! Imo he has always been the most special of all elves, and I’ve always considered him to be at the heart of the history of ME. His story fills your heart with so much sadness and at the same time hope and warmth, and it taught me so many valuable lessons during a very hard time in my life. He will always be the GOAT, hands down. 🥰 Thank you for this video and the rest to come.

I feel as if you should send out certificates in Tolkienology to any subscriber who can watch all your videos and pass a multiple choice exam. I appreciate how in depth your videos are and how high the quality of your research is. I feel like I'm taking a university course online which I personally love. So many channels cover surface level material that a fan deep in the lore likely already knows (which I also appreciate but in a different way.) However, I learn something new anytime you produce a video. So to you, do I raise a mug of Green Dragon Ale. Prost und Zum Wohl!

I'm a reader who likes to dig out information for myself. I first read LOTR and the indices more than 50 years ago, and have remained a source guy, not one fixated on visual adaptations. But bless the ROPers, their ever-growing dumpster fire has had the unexpected consequence of making me return to the lore. I'm making my own, much deeper dive into the early days, especially being enchanted by the Beginnings and the Years of the Trees. But here I want to thank you for your great work. I can much more easily digest what you're presenting because I have a much surer foundation, also recently having purchased "The Nature of Middle Earth" and re-reading select parts of the Silmarillion. This video of yours is wonderful, and the art work is beautiful and appropriate for the spoken text. You are among the Good Guys that unite this widespread and (if they but knew it) potentially powerful voice against the Amazon defilement.

Tolkien is no mere writer. He was a creator. IMO, he was Eru Iluvatar....and it was he who created the shifting mysteries and stories we've loved for nearly a century. IMO, he was not a writer of high fantasy. He IS high fantasy. And his stories are holistic studies of Creation and Life itself. Were he alive today...I'd hug him and thank him for a lifetime of love...for just one book: The Silmarillion. PS Of Beren and Luthien is the greatest romantic story of all time.

1:40:48 You say that Galadriel and Celeborn moved out of Beleriand after the fall of Nargothrond, but I think 'ere' is archaic for 'before'. I guess this implies that they left Doriath (strangely enough) before its ruin, so maybe even the dwarves of Nogrod helped them passing the mountains. Anyway, this is a really fascinating detail I was not aware of, I used to think that they witnessed the battle of the thousand caves and second kinslaying and thereafter lingered at the havens of Sirion... I wonder if they even left during the siege of Angband? The Blue Mountains were harder to reach safely after the Dagor Bragollach. And thank you for the ride!

Yes my mistake, thanks for the hint (and the time code), I put it in the mistakes section. I wanted to say around that time, but before Nargothrond fell, so that they are gone when it happens. I remember looking up the word, but still made the mistake, maybe it was late 😂

Finally a lore video have been released. I hope this will mean that The Differences between Film and Books series will continue as it has been postponed for waaaay too long. I mean, we're still at the point when Frodo has woken up after being healed after passed out due to the curse/sickness of the Morgûl Blade and Sam hasn't arrived yet happy to see his master being alive and well. I hope after this the Film/Book videos will start up again and be released more frequently as we still need to get to The Council of Elrond and get passed that point very soon (I'm anxious and eager to see not only The Counsil of Elrond but The Ring Goes South, The Fellowship attempting crossing the Caradhras, The Mines of Moria and so on).

The funny thing is, that this video was supposed to be part of that series. Frodo wakes up and sees Elrond, and now let us talk about that character that is very prominent in this (Many Meetings) and the next chapter. I expected a slightly longer video than the "Who is Glorfindel" video (which is also a special episode of the series), but I worked on the script for months and it continued to grow to the point where I decided to make it a stand alone video coming in multiple parts (I think I explained that already, but can't remember whom I wrote it). So see it as unofficial special episodes. I will continue with the series after it. I'm really looking forward to the Moria section, but that is still far off at my pace

@@ThePhilosophersGames No. It was easy to follow because of the accompanying art work and the reiteration of your points. You were kind of reviewing as you were going along and providing details too, a lot of which I have seen on other videos. Thank you for producing this…it is just what I need, passing through a time of change and sadness. It helps to reflect on the far vision of Tolkien: that this world, even in its sometimes beauty, is not my true home. It’s been almost 60 years since I first read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings….then in years to come all of Christopher’s great editorial work…and the Letters. The great truths behind this work will always offer restoration and healing, bringing us closer to the Myth That Is True. Thanks again for your good work and for being faithful to the author.

Happy that it could help you a bit in difficult times. All the best to you! Yes agreed. The stories really have a beauty and some wisdom inside them, that can help you to put things into perspective and get something comfortable out of it. I think it's also awesome that it connects many generations of people. My Tolkien videos reach a very wide audience, while e.g. my gaming related content manages to accomplish this far less.

Edit: hey I noticed you were still using the 9.5 years per valain year, hasn't it been suggested that has changed since the release of the new book to be 140 years per Vyear. ...ah ok I see you mention the nature book, so what do you think that 9.5 works better or 140 ? I just wonder why you didn't change it, you always seam to put thought into these choices so yeah just curious about it now lol

Yes this was a project I worked on for a long time now and now the first 2 hours are already released. But there's still a long Second Age section and a long Third Age section left 😅 What was your old username? Was it also a Star Wars LotR Combination? When I wrote the script the new book (Nature of Middle-earth) was not out yet. I only knew a bit of the preview stuff. Ofc the idea of 144 years was already mentioned before. E.g. in Morgoth's Ring or even in Appendix D of LotR "It seems clear that the Eldar in Middle-earth, who had, as Samwise remarked, more time at their disposal, reckoned in long periods, and the Quenya word yén, often translated ‘year’ (p. 377), really means 144 of our years." But if we apply it to the dates we know time spans in the old times become unreasonable. E.g. Fingolfin and his people start to cross Helcaraxë Year of the Trees 1497 and reach Middle-earth Years of the Sun 1. With the old calculations it's around 30 solar years, which still is an extremely long time, but with the later idea of 144 solar years, it takes 432 solar years, that seems unreasonably long. The Edain (according to Nature of Middle-earth) needed 50 solar years to move all people from Middle-earth to Elenna/Númenor with ships. It's strange that the Elves resided in this cold and deadly place for over 400 years. Or the Noldor want to leave Aman and move north to Araman towards Helcaraxë. TThe needed around 10 solar years before, now its 144 solar years. What did they do all the time? To explain all this one needs a lot of extra rules and this makes time unnecessarily complicated in my opinion. In Nature of Middle-earth Tolkien even discusses "ageing rates" of Elves, but they are quite complicated. When it comes to dates and times, I think they should be easy. As a result I prefer 10 solar years = 1 Valian year (9.582 solar years = 1 Valian year).

I think the two most important Tolkien characters were Dior and Finrod. Dior because he was the most beautiful ever to exist and yet has such a short story. He was the perfection which should be but can't be because our world is imperfect. He is the innocent child. Finrod because he is what Tolkien was trying to tell us. How should someone who is like a god view the imperfection of humanity? Should he be disgusted or he should he be amazed? Should God be more impressed with his ability to do anything with no problem or that I actually summon the ability to get out of bed in the morning knowing that probably everything I will encounter will be against me and more powerful than me?

1:04:58 I feel the need to correct a detail here. Fingolfin and his sons DID participate in the Kinslaying, though they came upon the battle while it was in progress and joined without knowing what it was being fought over. Still, they were well aware of how terrible a crime Kinslaying was: and indeed were closer kin to the Teleri than Fëanor and his followers. Additionally, although Turgon became embittered towards the Sons of Fëanor on account of Elenwë’s death: he strongly supported Fëanor in the beginning and likely still agreed with him philosophically on many counts. This would likely have been well known. Thus, Idril would have had a complicated relationship with the Sindar at the Havens. However, Círdan would not have tolerated any serious conflicts between the residents. Likely however, this is one of the reasons why Idril and Tuor sail for the West before the Third Kinslaying.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 2 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge only Fingon participated and he did not know what happened and just helped his kin (not sure if there's another version). That does ofc not excuse him completely, but changes the intention and guilt. Also Tolkien rewrote some details many times. In some later versions even Galadriel fights against the Noldor. It's hard to say what one takes as granted. In the Silmarillion it states "Fingolfin and Turgon his son therefore spoke against Fëanor", so they were not the biggest fans of him. Fingon had a good relationship to Maedhros.
@sophiejones3554
@sophiejones3554 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePhilosophersGames hmmm, I’ll admit it makes more sense to conceive of Turgon being reluctant: given that he becomes bffs with Thorondor. However, I know of only one version of the First Kinslaying: and that is the Silmarillion version. If it were only Fingon who participated, then surely he would be named specifically. Rather however, the Silmarillion says it was the “Host of Fingolfin” who joined the battle. Though it specifies that Fingon was in the forefront, this seems to indicate that it was not solely Fingon who joined the fight. Angrod’s argument with Thingol also indicates this strongly. He does not attempt to argue that the majority of the Noldor are innocent (as would be the case if it were only the Fëanorians and Fingon who fought): but rather that the suffering they have faced since is sufficient punishment. While Angrod himself is specifically stated to be innocent: he is clearly aware that most of those he traveled with on the Ice were not. The common interpretation of the Silmarillion anyway, is that anyone in Fingolfin’s Host is guilty unless otherwise stated (Glórfindel is an explicitly named exception). Though I certainly do not think one must always accept the common interpretation of the Silmarillion: as there are some common takes which are… dubious at best.

I could go on about the amazing-ness of this video, but I'll ask a question instead: If you separated this one part into 4 x 30 minute videos, it would be more KZfaq algorithm happy ... some would say compliant ... and posting this 2 or 3 per week, in sequence, would work with the algorithm and you might see increases in views via timeline suggestions as well as notifications. In addition, to be at the level of Tolkien fan to sit and absorb 2 hours of continuous complexity, is rare. The average viewer will click away when it gets too much for them, but if this was cut into 4 or more in a series, it can be ingested in more reasonable spurts. Multiply this by the 4 coming hours, and you would have a 12 or 15 video series ... and become regular 2 per week content that would be very KZfaq algorithm happy, and happily satisfy regular viewers and new viewers. You dont need to go into detail answering, to keep it simple; Did you think of any of this while editing?
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 2 жыл бұрын
Yes thought of it and it would have been reasonable. But there are multiple reasons why I decided against that. My series videos (I have the book analysis and film differences series) on YT rarely got that popular view wise. It seems that my long videos are the most popular. I have one 75 minute video, that sits on 2.3 million views, while the most popular video of the series (episode one) has "only" 110k. It's not even close. There is episode 20 (a special) "Who is Glorfindel" also 110k, but it's not "marked" from the outside (title, thumbnail) as an episode. So it seems for my channel video series are not that popular. The question is why? I think a series is more for your core viewer base (subscribers) and my subscriber base is decent in size (and ofc awesome!), but not that big. So to give a video the potential to get really a lot of views, it needs to be suggested on YT. If people get episode 4 suggested a percentage of people might be hesitant to click on it though, because they maybe would want to start with episode 1 and to fond it they would need to search it -> not gonna happen when there is so much content. Only if somebody gives my content a chance or watches episode 4 it works, but that is only another percentage of people. So with a series I make a bunch of videos where only Episode 1 being suggested really has the potential for a lot of views (that is also why episode one in a series and maybe last episode always have most views). As a result this might be why my long videos works o well. In addition I think I build a reputation of the dude who makes the long videos and in this I'm kind of "unique" in the LotR Fellowship of Content creators. So it fits my "brand" or is my trademark, if that makes sense. In addition a 2 hour video on Elrond is also "unique" and in a time where every minute over 500 hours of videos get uploaded, you need to stick out. You are right it won't satisfy everyone and also some people say I won't watch 2 hours, but they think about it and its length (and that is worth a lot!), because 2 hour+ video essay are nothing everyone will do, because it's a ridiculous amount of work (months) and as you say uploading daily or weekly is king. But I can't upload daily or weekly, because my style and maybe the way I work is not compatible with that. But ofc my channel has a decent size and my videos are watched by tons of non subscribers. So they get recommended. And for some reason my old stuff gets recommended a lot (maybe due to the reasons above). I guess my topics are never outdated as long as LotR is popular. On top of all that I'm also not a reasonable person and a terrible business man. I do this because I love doing it. Algorithm or not, I do what I want. That is why I started YT in the first place. And I also wanted to make the longest and most detailed character study video I have ever done ^^ And you can just stop the video and come back to it later YT should usually save where you left off. Sorry for the long answer.

@@ThePhilosophersGames - Well, thats a heck of a lot more than I expected, lol. In the end, if what you do works, dont break it. " I do this because I love doing it. Algorithm or not, I do what I want." Thats all that matters. Its interesting; other YT creators in other fields (computer tech, short documentary subjects, lifestyle, Mr Beast, etc) see it a different way, length of each video and thought out frequency of upload is king for recommendations and subs, and you see the algorithm work in a different way for you. Know that theres a lot of us who will happily sit thru a 2 hour Elrond piece, as theres so much he was involved with and how he was intertwined with everyone elses story, we learn a heck of a lot more about the Middle Earth universe as a whole. Iv'e read the Silmarillion 2x's and this type of video brings that overwhelming amount of information to life. Thanks for that.

A fellow YT creator (far bigger channel) once said to me that creating "scarcity" is also a good thing for videos and the channel, esp. in the context of taking small breaks as creator. I think people vastly overestimate their knowledge of the "algorithm". Ofc uploading every day with an established user base will lead to your new video getting a certain amount of views and as a result being recommended. So uploading 5 videos/week or at least weekly will increase this effect. The more videos you input into the system, the more it has to recommend to potential interested viewers. So their assumption is right. But ofc if the upload of your video is "special" because people like your content but you don't upload that often, it can also work. Still looking at my Tolkien YT colleagues weekly high quality uploads lead to much more success. See Matt (Nerd of the Rings) one year ago he had like 4000-5000 subs, now he has more subs than men of the West and is the biggest lore channel. His success is ofc also well deserved, but he uploads videos every week and his videos are well done too. I must admit though his growth is abnormally good. Like Men of the West started making Tolkien content 2017 again I also uploaded my first Lore related video 2017. Took him over 4 years to get to 333k subs, Nerd of the Rings did it in just one year, that's really insane. And I only made it to 40k in 4 years 😅 So in this sense uploading weekly is for sure the better strategy. Though I must say to my defence, that I also see really good view numbers and esp. watch time, but people seem to absolutely hate the idea of subscribing to my channel 😭 haha happy you enjoy the videos and it seems there are enough people who love watching 1+ hour long videos ^^ sorry for the walls of texts, but I kind of rarely talk about YT stuff, but put some thought into it 😂

I think, isn't elrond one of the oldest characters in lotr? Because he fought in a battle 3000 years before the events of lot. He's one of the characters that goes through the whole entire saga from silmarillion to return of the king.

He is ofc old, but only born at the very end of the First Age. Galadriel, Celeborn or Círdan were around even longer.

He’s one of the oldest characters, but one of the younger elves. Galadriel & Celeborn, Círdan, Gildor Inglorion and probably even Thranduil are older. Even Glórfindel is older if you count his first and second life together.

A very good question. I find the point or the idea very interesting that Ggil-galad made sacrifices for his alliance with Númenor that led to further conflict (Woods, Dunelding Dúnedain conflict and later Rohan, etc). Nothing is for free it seems and decisions have consequences. And considering that Elrond was a close advisor of him (also mentioning that he travelled the forests once when it was one big forest later "and many things wild and strange [he] knew"), this is also part of Elrond's story and the time Elrond lived in. I felt I have to put this quote/detail in context and it's a point that you maybe don't find in many other lore videos. Though I feel like I maybe was not able to bring this point across too well. We will have many excursions like this that I try to connect to Elrond in part 2 (which is why I think part 2 and 3 + will be the most interesting parts). E.g. we will look at Thranduil, Galadriel, etc too in a lot of detail, because they are import in a time when Elrond is important too. They are powers as and leaders and usually a world is not that isolated. We find small small text hints for that. One might argue that I over analyse things, but I think to understand a character and its functions one must understand also a bit the times he lived in.
