Roberta might seem simple on the surface, a crazed killer maid in a dark anime. But, there's much more under the surface, that covers real world history, Garcia, and the Lagoon Crew. Will you be able to see her the same after this?
_____
Black Lagoon is a mainstay of the channel, as we've discussed Rock, Revy, and Balalaika before. But today we'll be looking at one of the most requested character from the 2006 anime: Roberta, the maid to the Lovelace family and former FARC fighter. Her past, like Balalaika, is rooted in real history, which we'll cover as well as her actions and words to create a full profile of one of Black Lagoon's best characters.

Hey all, quick correction here! In the intro to Blood Trail, we see Claxton in 1969, which fades into Diego's murder, which is labeled as "26 years later." This puts Blood Trail in 1995. And the voice in Roberta's head, Hironobu Sato, the Japanese technician she killed, mentions her killing of him was 7 years ago, meaning Roberta was active in some capacity until 1988 at least, not 1982 as I reasoned here. Sorry about that everyone!

Roberta Cernos was born in 1960 in Venezuela. RBT INDEED takes place in 1995, 3 years after the events of Black Lagoon and Two after 2nd Barrage. Garcia was born in 1979 in Columbia and is 15 years old here. Making Roberta about 35.

Excellent character breakdown. I never even thought of Roberta as an idealist before, but i think you're right. In high school one of my fascinations was with guerilla wars and thei methods to wage it so Im quite familiar with FARC or at least the Guerilla war they were fighting for decades until the peace agreement. But i won't lie I never really did research as to why the revolutionary organization existed, I just rolled with the logic of "something something communism" but damn theres an irony to the reality of the only way to defeat a corrupt capitalistic system is to utilize and exploit others using violent and corrupt means to acquire the means to fight capitalism with underground capitalism. FARC has used child soldiers kidnapped from towns, placed thousands of landmines in Columbia many of which was placed near schools and hospitals, raped, pillaged, and this is just some of the stuff i remember off the top of my head. The historical background you gave was very much appreciated and the idea that Roberta believed in the cause but not all of the means is something I think i can agree with wholeheartedly.

Thank you for the insight, I'm glad I was able to provide a new look at her mindset, and present a decent look at the history involved as well! It was an interesting idea to present; it seems quite contrary to her character at first, but after looking at everything it seemed to fit the best. I'm glad I was able to make a convincing case for it here. But, thank you for watching, and for the comment!

Well they tried peaceful ways for decades and got killed for it. There are times you need to call to arms but must be careful to not turning into the thing you despise. But the reality is you do need more than ideals to change. A twisted cycle at its finest.

Roberta is my favorite character in Black lagoon and is the most dangerous and deadliest combatant in the whole show hell even Revy didn't want to fight her in Blood Trail. I seen a lot people saying Roberta is a mary sue and I strongly disagree with that because a mary sue is someone who has no flaws and is prefect and gets rewards for their actions without any consequences. Roberta is far from Mary Sue, just because she good handling weapons and is deadly strong in a fight doesn't make her a mary sue (in a way, she kinda like a female punisher). Roberta has a lot of flaws and is a tragic character because to me Roberta is a person who trying desperately trying to changed into a better but her old past keeps coming back to her. The blood trail very shows how mental unstable and bloodthirsty Roberta when something she loves is taken away from her without it, she nothing but a killer. Also the ending of the blood trail is bittersweet because Roberta still seem broken but at least she has Gracia back. Also side note, I find it funny how Roberta as maid still look deadly when fighting because imagine getting killed by a maid with Harry potter glasses. I rarely seen characters with glasses be taken seriously they often the nerd character or the smart character. So it's really nice seeing Roberta a deadly combatant still look badass even glasses on.

An interesting thought I had when rewatching Black Lagoon a few years back. The Lovelace are from Venezuela and were a, well, rich family with connections. Sure, they hit an especially hard time in 1995, but they probably still were closer to the elites than to the poor of Venezuela. That was in 1995. A few years later, at the tail end of 1998 there was a presidential election in Venezuela. Hugo Chavez won that election. The next year was the beginning of the Bolivarian Revolution and a change of Venezuela's constitution. Venezuela became socialist. While it didn't do away with private property all together, there was massive nationalization, so I doubt the Lovelace's would've been unaffected by the change. I think it would be extremely interesting to read in the future, how they handled the situation, I think there's potential for a fascinating narrative there.

Wow. Don´t know of many people who pulled of an Anime analysis video that covers real life history in a well researched manner, even going so far as citing sources from the field. And all that to analyze character motivation and background. I need to re-watch all of Black Lagoon for probably the 4th time. While we may only hope for another season of Black Lagoon, our hope for more Black Lagoon videos by you is not in vain. I mean the main characters alone are very interesting, but there is also lots of side-plots and minor characters. Even just doing some video titled "Life in the City of the Dead" would be possible. But just do what you want, Black Lagoon or not, I´ll probably watch it when I have time.

Anyways great content my man keep it up I've subscribed after this video given that you seem to know what you're talking about and you have great skills at storytelling and that's something that keeps me tuned in the entire time you talk. Please cover in the second part of this video the scene where Garcia listens in on the conversation Roberta has behind the door with the army dude idk his name lol, that scene shattered me into tiny little broken pieces the first time I saw it. It tore at my heart like no other scene did in fact that the line "I don't want to fight the Americans naked" shook me to my core so much so that even reading that line now brings back some ptsd like I shit you not that line had me shaking in so many emotions of disgust, please if you could somehow fit that information into your next video I would be so happy. Sorry for the split in content, I don't normally do so, but I think the natural point between the original run and Blood Trail justified it as an experiment. The viewer experience is always number one though, so I don't see it becoming the norm anytime soon! But, thank you for checking out the video and sticking around! I have the second part in the finishing stages now, and I don't focus much on the more explicit aspects of that scene, but I do cover Garcia's role and how it impacts and displays Roberta's mindset. As Colombian, I think they did a great job. First, there are a lot of women in their ranks (if you see other guerrillas), and they suffer a lot, due to they are enlisted (not necessary by force, but cause there is no option, because poverty, isolation and there is any option to progress), at a young age, they have to suffer not only the same training as any male, but also they have to serve sexually their superiors, they have to do abortions or be killed if they refuse. So, they got their mind far twisted than a male insurgent, and you can see that in combat or terrorist attacks. If you talk with Colombian soldiers ( I had to due to my job), they will tell you that women are the most sadistic and dangerous insurgent in FARC ranges (also FARC, is the most dangerous guerrilla in America).Moreover, during the combat in season 3 we can see that she was a "Pisa suave", that is an elite unit of the FARC, that are trained for stealth mission, they are trained to survive in the jungle at a young age, naked (cause clothes and shoes are noisy), no food, no water, only explosives and a gun called "Mata policias" or police killer, that shoots projectiles that break through Kevlar (as we see in the anime). The rate of mortality is very high, but the survivors are the deadliest killers in FARC ranges. Finally, she lives in Venezuela, the only place where an ex-FARC (because, nobody wants to go to Cuba), could try a normal life. I think that they did a great job about the background of Roberta, especially the disappointed about revolutionist Ideals and how they start to traffic drugs to generate profits.

@@ProfessorViral very true, Roberta and the other maid could start a training regime on the other maids just to be safe from political intervention against the Young Master.

The whole "featured comment" thing is disruptive. Please try to keep it at the end of the video or at beginning. It really ruins the content, especially considering how serious were the stuff you were discussing about South American politics. While it may look like a distant memory for a foreigner history books, it is a very sensitive subject in my lands and I would appreciate if the subject was discussed in a more respectful way. Thanks for your comprehension.

Sorry for that, I didn't mean it to be disrespectful in any way, although the placement certainly did that. It's a new feature to the videos, and I was iffy on how it would disrupt the flow, and you're right that it's out of place. I was looking more at the time than the content, and that's no way to edit a video. I never want to give the impression that I'm simply using real tragedy for content's sake; I do genuinely want to educate in these videos, although I'll always admit I'm no expert and there are others who could provide a much better look. I'll keep your comments in mind in the second part of this pair, and for all my videos moving forward

I can't stand non latinos speaking on her character honestly. This isn't personal to you, but I say this because the anime painted her worse than american soldiers. Sorry but in south america, america is nothing but a symbol of piratry and imperialism

I won't argue against that, I've been lucky enough to have educators who didn't shy away from the truth in those regards, although I'm no expert. And in the same way, I'm not the best person to discuss this history either. Since this video I've tried to be a lot better about making that fact clear, and encouraging others to seek out sources who are better to give the full details then me when speaking on the history of others

Black lagoon is really underrated, it's so much better than a overrated anime like demon Slayer
@ProfessorViral

I do like Demon Slayer, but I think the slower more comedic bits "ruin" the series a bit. But, that's just shounen for you. But, I am coming around to the idea Black Lagoon is underrated. Every pass I find something new, and not many anime can do that so many times

You're doing more demonization of her than needed. Do more research on the violence inflicted upon the masses in Latin America, the hand the US had in the rise of these oppressive regime in the region and re-assess your analysis.
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 3 жыл бұрын
While I didn't go into a much detail as I could have, I did focus on the terrible treatment of the masses in Colombia. I'm sure there's a lot I missed, but my main focus was the pain inflicted upon those who were oppressed. I only passingly mentioned the US involvement, which is an oversight on my part, especially given the focus on US involvement in Blood Trail. If I misrepresented any of the history I apologize, as I said I'm no expert, but I think I was clear in showing terrible treatment and divide. That being said, I don't think I'm unfair on Roberta. She herself admits her actions were terrible, including killing innocent people, not just oppressors or amoral people. I'm not here to say if what she did was right or wrong, whatever side it was for or against. If you made me pick, I'd always take the side of the people being forced down, and if the situation calls for it maybe I could even take her side. But I'm only stating what I read from her character, and what she herself tells us. I'll welcome challenge on historical aspects always, there are many people better than me to tell their own stories, but I have to stand by the narrative analysis that I do
