Black Lagoon, the 2006 cult classic from Rei Hiroe, is a manga and anime that takes inspiration from the real world, often incorporating some of history's darkest moments into its characters. This is part of what gives the anime some of the best developed characters throughout the entre genre. As with others in the anime like Balalaika, Roberta, or Takenaka, the Romania Twins, or Hansel and Gretel, are much the same. From Rock and Balalaika's statements, we can trace their origins back to Romania. Their story begins there in the 1980's, when Romania was still in the grips of Nicolae Ceaușescu, an iron-fisted authoritarian who implemented inhuman polices geared towards a population boom. He got he wish, as the population soared, leading to an entire generation of lost children. The twins Hansel and Gretel fit into this generation, and the history behind it helps to explain some of the more striking elements of the character. While Black Lagoon already did a great job of humanizing these twisted killers, learning the historical aspects which inspired these great characters makes their tale even more tragic; a pair of twins just like that entire lost generation- those who's lives were over, before they could even begin. This is Hansel and Gretel.
