Given that Xavier recruited her early, it retroactively makes her an original X-man. That's always a fun bit of trivia.

I was never big on Sage, but I've actually grown to like her in the Krakoan era. I don't normally like storylines that deal with alcoholism or addiction as they are so overdone in all media, but I actually felt for her. As someone who finds it hard to switch their brain off, I can sort of sympathise.

Yeah, I agree on the alcoholism part. I feel like it’s part of one of the character beats Sage sometimes gets; she may have a computer brain but she’s still a person who goes through harrowing stuff but is just better at compartmentalising it all. I’d say that, in terms of the Xmen franchise, I’d say Siryn’s alcoholism story is a good one.

Sage is an interesting one. She was also the one who extended out to the Xmen the truce between them and the Hellfire club in the 80’s. Considering where she was found, she might be Iranian. Although, one thing that Selene says in an issue makes her treatment by Xavier and Shaw disgusting. Selene, during a time when Rachel Summers infiltrated the Hellfire club, refers to Tessa as Shaw’s “Leman”. Leman is an Olde English word that could mean things like sweetheart or mistress. It’s also how the Shadow King describes Destiny to Mystique as her Leman in the 90’s. Shaw’s a sadist and Lourdes, his girlfriend, was regularly beaten by him. Because of the nature of his powers, she couldn’t fight back. So imagine Xavier essentially trafficked this homeless girl who saved his life from the stretch of land known as the Hindu Kush, kept her in his basement for years until she became an adult before sending her off to be this employee of Shaw’s. An employee who wouldn’t be able to say no to his advances. She’s the reason why the mutant, Lifeguard, finds Xavier disgusting. Now, you wanna see something even more gross? Jean knew about her. And, like all of Xavier’s secrets, didn’t tell anyone. That story where Bishop and Sage investigate the shattering of Emma? Jean has never met Sage outside of her Tessa disguise but the “Hi Sage” panel implies she knew. Sage is also a character people often headcanon as autistic with the capability to socially mask. Although that might just be from the supercomputer brain side. The best Sage stories for me are the ones that tell you “No. she’s not a robot. She’s a person who actually needs to process all of the stuff she’s been through instead of just locking it away in a file”. Frankly, out of all of the mutants who have never been on the core Xmen, she’s the one who deserves it most. As for why we don’t know much about her, from an episode they did about her on the podcast Cerebrocast, they do reveal that in the comics industry, some characters don’t get things added to them by other writers because that character is seen as the “pet” of another writer. She’s Claremont’s passion project and so no writer has added to her backstory significantly. There is this sweet interaction between her teammates after they hear about the spy backstory as one person goes “why should we even trust her?” To which, ShadowKat replies saying “She’s done so much for us already. I trust her because she cares about this team more than anyone else.” Sage overhears, cries a little before switching back to work mode because there’s a job to do. Great work. Ps: compelling characters who are big messes? Honey, welcome to the Xmen. We hope you survive the experience lol.

@@thenandocut If ShadowKat had a second mutation, it would be public speaking. Seriously, the amount of times she claps back whether it is at someone who attacks Nightcrawler because he scares their kids to doing the Anti- “M Word” speech, she’s always got it covered. But yeah, nice to know she was in the gifted. Speaking of the Gifted… will you be covering Claremont’s answer to “what if Mel Brooks made Hydra agents” aka Fenris?

Holy crap 😮 did NOT know all that trauma surrounding Sage! Goodness, and I’m impressed by the head cannon encouragement to make her an autism rep but it being due to the fact she’s got a super computer brain IS kinduva big stereotype autism chars recieve in pop culture, but considering all this, the fact that most fans know her form the squat pose on Xtreme Xmen cover makes her status, potential, and capabilities even more “gross”-ly overlooked and underrated, sweet Christmas…smh

@@Sandra-rc5uc Although Kitty being the President is a fun one. I did like the story where he brought back John Proudstar, Moira (probably the Shi’ar golem now), Destiny, Esme and Sophie. Here’s the thing with Claremont; he hates it when people play with his toys. So, like Peter David, he resets the characters often to how they were when he last used them. The only exceptions have been when someone else who can give a different perspective to them. Whilst many people in the comics community do not like Tini Howard, he liked that she was writing for Betsy Braddock. But the big badge of honour in the X office is when he uses someone else’s characters. Off the top of my head, those were Dr Cecilia Reyes, Esme and Sophie. Heck, because she’s seen as Claremont’s “Pet”, whilst she has been in teams a lot, no writer dare alter Sage eg actually give her a name.

You might as well say “boys will be boys” 🤷🏿 as a comic fan who grew up reading during that era I say just call it what it is, an era full of gross and sexist depictions of female bodies, but be aware it’s what you’ll see if you read or see clips of women from those comics.
