I like Nick's personality the most because he's witty and good-natured. Curie has perhaps the cutest personality, especially if one romances her because of her reactions to experiencing human emotions for the first time.

Maccready is far and away my favorite do to his sarcasm and sass. He makes me laugh more than most.

Strong isn't that hard to increase Max Affinity with. In fact, you can actually complete Minutemen quests with him. All you have to do is choose the aggressive dialogue when talking to settlers who ask for help and he'll like that. Do enough Minutemen quests and choose options like "we'll kick their asses" and you can get his affinity high quickly.

Cait can pick master locks I have her do it all the time. it just takes a little time and Bobby pins.

If you have unlocked Ballistic Weave, you can use it on the faded trenchcoat you get after returning to Nick's office from rescuing him. Then equip it to Nick.

Nick is my favorite companion even without considering usefulness. He's just such a sweet guy.

I really like Deacon, as though he's a big liar, actually turns out to be quite wise as you reach max affinity. He's really not too bad with his sniper, or a melee weapon to be honest. His perk is helpful for stealth based builds or even any others for those moments when you actually do use stealth. Not to mention that his lines are ABSOLUTELY hilarious in my opinion, and I can relate to him alot due to my sarcastic manor.

Just curious, but why do people dislike Preston's personality? Is it the endless radiant quests, because I think that besides that, he's a pretty nice guy.

Let's be honest. Dogmeat is the best.

MacCready is my favourite, mostly based on his history and personality. He's done a lot to protect others (and make caps) during his life and is trying to improve himself for the sake of his son. I think he and the Sole Survivor would bond really well, even if they don't end up in a romance, because they come from very similar circumstances and understand how far a parent will go to save their child. He's also an adorable dork at times. Also, the fact the developers gave him bad teeth is also kind of endearing (if a bit gross) because it shows the developers put some real thought into him. Growing up in a cave, eating fungus, sweets, and untreated water with no access to any dental care would royally screw your teeth. We don't always agree on synth rights, but I love Mac all the same.

Maccready is my personal favorite. He is such a badass and actually does damage.

My favorite companion is hands down, Dogmeat. I have completely ranked out the Lone Wanderer perk as well as invested some points on attack dog and stealth. Plus, I am able to do anything I wish without anyone judging my actions as well as go anywhere I like without turning factions hostile. Also, I have always wanted a German Shepherd companion. xD

I would argue that Piper's Perk is the best to get first and to get fast. She is dirt easy to level affinity with. She is typically the second companion you get or meet after Cogsworth, and if you get her perk early it gives a huge amount of leveling exp just from walking around and meeting new NPC's.

2:23 in my Bos playthroughs, I sent Danse to Echo Lake lumber mill in Far Harbor after sparing him in blind betrayal. There he gets to live a normal life protecting settlers and occasionally blasting super mutants with his laser rifle during settlement attacks. I like to think he is happy there.

I actually enjoy playing with Nick Valentine as a companion. As I prefer combat abilities he lasts longer. But you've got to choose your companion based on who you are going to align yourself with.

This is irrelevant , as i am now walking with 11 companions in power armor, dogmeat, and a glowing deathclaw pet in power armor. Pretty op even in survival.

Ada is the best companion, and that is a fact; being able to modify her to whatever you need is just ludicrous

Easy....Dogmeat. He never judges you when you take drugs, kill people, do 'bad' things - he just loves you no matter what and since I mainly fly alone, the Lone Wanderer and Attack Dog perks works really well with him. Plus, he doesn't die every 3 minutes like Dogmeat's Puppy in FO3!!! (thank god) For people, MacCready is my favourite guy, he has a fantastic perk, is pretty easy-going, has a good heart, and is a cool guy. Otherwise I like Danse and Old Longfellow. I really like Nick Valentine and Piper, but they're too 'nice'' for my kind of play and are quite judgemental if you aren't a goodie-goodie! New Vegas is Boone. Not sure about Fallout 3....hmmmm maybe Fawkes.

I knew I wasn't the only one to only play with just Nick Valentine. I love the guy, he has an interesting backstory, his manner as well as his mindset is great. His voice is so cool. And I just love the detective style he has. Also, he can literally take any legendary melee weapon and kill enemies easily.

Nick Valentine is, hands down, my favorite companion. I have to say though that the first time I played FO4 and heard his voice, I was a bit freaked out because he’s voiced by Stephen Russell, who voiced Mercer Frey 😵 Once I got used to it, he became my number one companion.

Macready, Cait and Dogmeat are the best because they don't give a shit when you do most evil things.

On Survival Mode Codsworth is best companion

I like it when enemies occasionally launch themselves after they ragdoll.

I use atomatron robots so my companions default weapon is always the best and I don't have to worry about affinity

I love Dogmeat! Rank 4 of attack dog + rank 3 lone wanderer = 40% damage reduction. In survival mode this combo save your life ;)

Danse is pretty good for survival mode because he can Tank damage and carry a lot of shit.

Nick can also gain more armour because he gives you that detective coat, you can use ballistic weave what will then be handy 👌

The only thing I care about in a companion is how they react to the decisions I make while they carry around half of the Commonwealth in their inventory.

Power armour survival with danse fast travelling by vertibird is the most bad ass option. Max out heavy gunner and lay waste to enemies with the vertibird minigun as you land and take off

Favorite companion is cait I rolled with her since like lvl 6 to lvl 50 I relied on her to do a lot. Gave her modded power armor and a good rifle and she carried most my stuff and even got some enemies off my back. I was fully in the minutemen and even tho she disliked that I got max affinity very quickly through lock picking and asking settlers for more money

I recommend Dogmeat for stealth characters, Codsworth for Craftsman characters, and either Hancock/Valentine/Strong for everyone else. Dogmeat and his skills compliment a stealth build quite well, given that he's the stealthiest companion, and the Loyal Companion/Lone Wanderer perks really do bring out the absolute best in a stealth character. Codsworth is by and far the definitive best character for survival play. Unfortunately, to get Codsworth to his best, you need to invest heavily in the craftsman skills. Not only can you outfit one of the most statistically overwhelming companions with an absolute nightmare of an arsenal (Nukaworld/Automatron DLC content), but having a constant supply of freshwater and a companion that can swap between Expert Lockpicking and Expert Hacking makes for one narly cohort. Also, in regards to economy, Sentry Bot Codsworth's lofty armor stat doesn't require repairs, and his freakishly amazing weaponry utilizes his infinite reserves of companion ammo. Which effectively means that you don't have to spend valuable resources in order to maintain Codsworth's DPS and survivability. You can't beat that insane level of utility, and few things are funnier than a heavily upgraded Sentry Bot charging at the enemy while shouting "Tallyho!" in a British accent.

Boone Wrong game

The companions' SPECIAL _DO NOT MATTER!_ The game doesn't use most of them and barely the ones it does. Do _not_ consider them when comparing companions. The game has been out for over a year and you should know better, Vinylic Puma. BTW, this is in order of when I often meet them, not preference (not counting Deacon lurking about). 1) Dogmeat is more trouble than he's worth. If you're going with Lone Wanderer build, go alone. Especially in survival mode where stealth is mandatory. I want followers to have my back, not someone who insists on being in front of me and tripping traps and ruining my sniper shots. All do it, but Dogmeat does it all the time. Believe me, you'd want a good dog in this kind of environment, but the reasons why don't exist as game mechanics. So there's no point. Hell, you can't even improve his offense or defense with equipment. 2) Codsworth is as awesome as his perk is terrible. Shouldn't it be any damage from robots? They probably nerfed it before launch due to how easy it is to get. He's a great crutch early on, when you need a crutch. By the time he's obsolete, you are probably better off getting Lone Wanderer and going full stealth. Unless you have Automatron. I've heard he actually fights better than Ada or any self-made robot. He's certainly more fun to be around. Who doesn't want a robo-valet/bodyguard. I'm even will to ignore the fake RP. But, if you're doing evil, go with Ada. She'll complain, but won't turn on you. 3) I am very glad I got this game after Bethesda patched the radiant quest system. I didn't realize how annoying Preston would be until I read about it. Funny fact: while all humanoid companions have a mechanically unique gun that uses invisible "companion ammo" that never runs out, Preston's musket also is much weaker than normal ones. It's tricked out, mod-wise. But it's base damage is much, much less, almost half less. I wonder if this means that NPCs using laser muskets fully crank them between each firing and do so instantly. That's the only reason I can think of for Preston's gun getting nerfed like that. If so, I'm glad they aren't used by enemy factions. That would hurt. 4) Danse is the willing tool of a faction I consider the lesser of two evils. He chose to join those imperialist fanatics when he had a good if boring life as a civilian. His fate is karma. The problem, however, is getting his perk. This requires roleplaying a reluctant BoS knight, and that's hard to justify for RP purposes when the Minutemen and Railroad are much easier to join for good characters. The kind of person who would join the Brotherhood willing, _would_ likely be the kind of person who would kill Danse, however they felt about it. It would take a lot of moral acrobatics to join the BoS, help them to the point of "Blind Betrayal" and still be freethinking enough to stare down Maxson over this. The power armor is nice, though. He also supports doing good things, which is a lot better than companions I would otherwise find more moral such as MacCready. It's also funny how the other companions treat the damned invader with exactly the disrespect an unwelcome foreign thug deserves. 5) I don't think Piper's perk is that bad. I like big XP, and I cannot lie. The more level perks you get and the faster you get them the better. So I never turn down anything that gives an XP boost. But it's very limited. There is a finite number of places to find and people to persuade. So, if you want that, get it early and fast. And yes, her gifts suck and most certainly aren't better then nothing. Of course I don't really take advantage of companion supplies. I still find her more fun to be around than Cait or Curie (fake accents get on my nerves after awhile, as do kill-crazies and cloudcuckoolanders). 6) Strong is actually pretty decent in a fight. Annoying to be around. Him disliking things like lockpicking are less of a problem than people realize so long as you don't hit banks. He gains affinity from killing things. Just fight with him, which is what you're supposed to be doing anyway, and he'll come to like you. Not that his perk is worth getting. One of the few characters you can be a Nuka-world raider with. 7) Nick is awesome. We all know it. He's moral without being patronizing. His initial equipment sucks and you can't up armor him. But you can put him into power armor and give him a better gun. He can hack terminals which is much more useful than Cait's lockpicking. His perk isn't great, but it's convenient for when he's not with you. He's a fan favorite for good reason. 8) I dislike Cait, but I love her story arc. It would be nice if her character developed beyond "now that I'm clean, I hate chems". You helping her out was an act of selflessness (her perk sucks too much to be an incentive). As was Tommy firing his only employee so she could get the help he can't give her. She knows both things and points them out. So she can't claim she's never experienced selfless help and so justify her own pathological selfishness. But then, hypocrisy and special pleading are common enough with people with sane upbringings. At least holding her tongue when you help someone else out rather than complain would've been nice. As for lockpicking, it's better than the gifts you receive from other companions. But there are so many high level locks all over the place that the Lockpicking perk is pretty much obligatory. At least she's the fastest way to get the Cryolator and the Limitless Potential. 9) "Spilling blood ain't sporting if the prey ain't earned it. Lucky for us, the Commonwealth provides." is the perfect line to describe a morally gray character. Hancock loves killing, more than Preston or Danse who took careers in war. But he's very selective about his victims. And there's his 'philosophy'. This guy has taken the time to think about what's right and wrong and not just accepted it from his surroundings. Just a great anti-hero. Isodoped isn't good, though, and shotguns are terrible. A solid companion nonetheless. 10) MacCready is kinda inconsistant. He's the companion to most likely be worried or scared in certain situations, but he loves violent confrontations. He hates the Gunners and what they stand for, but is himself one of the shadier companions, approving of theft and the like. Again, he says he's trying to better himself for his son's sake, but he doesn't seem to realize that theft and unnecessary violence are _way_ worse than profanity. A great perk and well worth the effort, though. Plus any darn excuse to kill and loot Gunners is a good 'un, amirite? 11) What is up with Deacon? His own allies don't know. The real frustrating about his backstory (or lack there of) is that he clearly despises the Minutemen (in contrast to Preston's grudging respect for the Railroad). He probably has good reasons, but "little better than police" ain't gonna cut it when so little we know about the political situation prior to the SS's awakening. You can't be police without a government. Who were they policing for? Was there a fight between the Minutemen and the Railroad neither we, nor Preston, know anything about? Preston himself says little how the old Minutemen were organized and operated, only that "no one is going to miss them". I can forgive Preston to not know everything, he was only a junior officer, but Deacon is an older man who was in the thick of things. I don't need to know his life story. I need to know the Commonwealth's past and know it well. That would've been much more useful than "you can't trust everyone". After what Vault-tec pulled, I ain't trusting _anyone_. Good perk for sneak builds (and, thus, survival mode). And his snarking is, like Nick's, rather refreshing at times. Too bad his gun is identical to MacCready's. 12) Curie. Ah, boy. Her acquisition quest is annoying as hell. Her HP wasn't properly programmed. Even her SPECIAL, not that it matters, is basic and reveals nothing extra about her character like everyone else's. Her perk is marginal. Even her gun is a copy of Danse's. At least she can be funny at times. Seriously, the look on her face and the annoyance in her voice when you give Moe the bull is wonderful. This is a woman who takes baseball seriously. 13) Why, after you've tread through the Commonwealth long enough to start accepting it as your new home, did Father think it was a good idea to give you the most bigoted courser as a bodyguard? Okay, maybe he thought X6-88's contempt of the surface dwellers would rub off on you. But that runs counter to his manipulative lies when first meeting him saying the Institute wants to help the surface as soon as they feel ready. Everything until then is a regrettable but necessary evil. And X6 just spews hate. A good character to show, in no uncertain terms, that the Institute are the Legion analogue: the worst of the bad guys. 14) Is it me, or does Longfellow's rifle randomly spawn leveled mods when you first meet him? Another nice anti-hero. And one that prefers peaceful resolutions like Hancock. I rather like these nuanced characters. His perk isn't terrific, but it is logical. 15) I really wish you could've somehow beat the game with the Nuka-world Confederacy. If just because there is no way any of the four main factions would tolerate a raider overboss amongst their own ranks. At least Preston reacts appropriately. Gage is very well armed and is one of the few who's actually good in a fight. His perk is solid, but the jerk will actually guilt trip you on the way if you intend to get the perk just to wipe out the confederacy later. I could see an unscrupulous general, heavy, sentinel, or director doing such things. But no one who would've joined those factions sincerely would've taken the position of overboss sincerely as well. Raiders are the enemies of the world. And Gage is all too happy to throw you at it and watch the kaboom.

Recently I've gained a serious interest in Automatron robots for their customization and effectiveness. Last on my list is your favorite... Dogmeat. During my gameplay he tends to be a liability, a safety hazard. He is great in open terrain, but indoors or close quarters he sucks. Not even the perks makes up for the abuse he has caused onto my characters. Constantly getting in my way to the point I decide flying solo until I can find a different companion. Glad he is likeable by most; but for me, safety first and he has not measured up to those standards for the most part. Otherwise I enjoy MacCready's company the most; though his good shot sucks too, but at least his shot doesn't get in my way.

dogmeat is without a doubt the best, mainly because of all the really powerful perks you can take advantage of while still using him and making him stronger

Piper because of the sweets and because she is sweet a good person a badass and can use light weapons better than others

nick and cait are my favourite because i like caits quest, her stats and i gave her grognaks costume and a melee early on and its amazing. that extra carry weight is also nice and bringing nick to far harbor is cool and he is just cool in general

They all run in front of you, run up to you when you are fighting, say the same crapp all the time and often ask if you hear something when they are getting whacked by multiple enemies. Hopefully the next Fallout will have better AI!

there is this glitch where you tell dogmeat to fetch items, but you have to do it near the cryolater case in vault 111. he will then take the cryolater, and enter the trade menu with dogmeat to get the ammo. this also works with level 1.

For high levels: Don't have them use power armor, they'll be left with nothing but the torso in no time. Give your companion MK5 BW undershirt and hat along with ultralight assault marine armor, ~370 (damage/energy resistance) then give them the splattercannon or problem solver with hardened piercing auto reciever, any variation in special stats effectively becomes irrelevant. Activate lovers embrace to get the 15% xp boost as often as possible. Companions that can fit the bill: Cait, Piper, Hancock, Maccready, Preston, and Gage. For everyone else Dogmeat:very poor damage output, armor available to him is quite weak, doesn't level past 100, no lovers embrace Codsworth/Ada:inferior max potential armor value compared to most human companions (full Hydraulic sentry bot) infinite ammo or not, their ranged weapons have no armor penetration values coupled with mediocre damage output vs top tier enemies. No lover's embrace Curie: Lacks sneak perk entirely making her the only companion that will set off mines and tripwires, enemies will always hear her move. Nick: only wears trench coats, armored variants are less than 1/3 as effective as top tier sets. No lovers embrace Strong: limited weapon choices, best set of mutant armor gives little benefit. Stealth isn't something he's familiar with. No lovers embrace Deacon/X6-88: No lovers embrace Danse: Turns BoS against you, turns entire settlement against any vertibird you call in Longfellow:Only companion that is not immune to radiation. No lovers embrace Player built automatrons: same as Codsworth and Ada but only essential as active companion. Never essential in survival.

Top three First: Cait. Second: Condsworth Third: Nick Valentine (Nicky)

Dogmeat is best boy. Synth Curie is best eye candy. (IMO) And a fully kitted out Sentry Codsworth is the most hilarious. Nuka-Quantum cannons, massive carry weight, and rear mounted launchers. And he is still as prim and proper as ever.

Grrr, Dogmeat always wanders off when I need him to trade things, and being the huge packrat I am... I get rid of him ASAP, despite the guilt. Nick, Deacon, and Cait will always be my favorites, as they're a nice combination of skills and banter. Danse has terrible aim and goes through a tremendous amount of ammo if you switch his weapon out. No idea how a high-ranking BOS member can be such a terrible shot, and the stimpaks too! I'm forever poor, too, so... Ada kicks serious ass, similar to Codsworth. I also have a soft spot for MacCready. I've never brought Hancock with me, though. Something to put on my to-do list (I'm not sure this gung-ho Brotherhood character will approve, but we'll see next time, if not this one =)). Early on, I love Piper. She's so sweet, if a little naive, and decent for lower levels. She sets the whole tone of the game for me.

While maybe not the best companion in terms of stats, etc, I like travelling with Curie because I think she has some of the funniest and best lines. (The "little baggies" and "a whole lot less of...THAT!")

You guys forget that cait trigger rush is op when nerd rage is involved I've used that to kill everyone in Quincy at lvl 10 in survival

Dog Meat Has Saved my Life Many Times Over..but with that being said, using cods worth with Robo Treads with all the extra carrying armour along with the robo Brain seems to be really great. Doesnt matter the weapon type, he always seems to be on point

Did Puma mention Romance? That’s a pretty big deal. Having a companion-lover boosts xp gains by 5%. That can make a huge difference in who you want to travel with. Cait’s my gal. You could go lone wanderer, after romancing companions, and send them each to important settlements. Get that bonus xp! Fun fact, if you don’t want to hear their sexy talk, after waking up, assign them to guard duty. An artillery cannon on the other side of the settlement from the beds.

Which one should I have? I know what to do! Use mods and have all the companions for about ten minutes and then my game will crash

I'm surprised you didn't mention Ada as being one of the best. She might not have a companion perk, but she can be buff as hell. Once you get her decked out, she can just destroy opponents.

you left out the 4th rank of attack dog which makes you take 10% less dmg while traveling with him so 10% dmg resistance(attack dog) 30% dmg resistance (lone wanderer) 25% dmg output (lone wanderer) 100 carrying capacity (lone wanderer) + 25 action points (lone wanderer) yeah dogmeats the best companion

No companion is the best way to go Puma.

One other thing in Danse's favor is his power armor, which i'm fairly certain never breaks down, unlike with the other companions, it's one of the reasons i like to keep Danse around.

I'm mostly the Lone Wanderer type, but thought of having Danse, Nick, or Hancock with me. A hard choice....

I recently bought a creation club upgrade that gives you T-60 power armored sentinel companion. He’s a 3rd wheel and powerful. He has large carry weight and he get right into the fights.

Nick can equip other trenchcoats, like the one you get for his story, and you can give it railroad lining for higher resistance. It also fixes his hand

My favorite is Cait. Her companion quest is fun and her back story is tragic. Even her companion perk isn’t all bad if your a VATS user.

I also love Curie..shes just so cute! Valentine is my second favorite and then Danse (before I chose to side with the Railroad :p)
