Go to www.manscaped.com/ and used code SCOTTSTHOUGHTS for 20% off!
Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle (except held items)
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- My Pokemon have perfect genetics to ensure fair comparison between species.
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- My Pokemon has perfect DVs
-- The Trash-Can-Puzzle is automatically solved so times are not affected by RNG
-- The bike is allowed (the bike skip is not)
-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game & timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu
Yellow Version changes from Red/Blue:
1. You cannot use Dig/Escape Ropes in Bill's House or the Pokefan Club
2. You cannot talk to the trainers in Blaine's gym to battle them
3. Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine do not have Good AI
4. The Elite Four have better movesets
5. Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni have higher level teams
6. Blaine doesn't use Super Potions are full HP
7. The rival picks his eeveelution based on the outcome of the first two battles.
-- Lose in the lab: Vaporeon
-- Win in the lab and skip route 22: Flareon*
-- Win in both locations: Jolteon
-- *You cannot lose on route 22 because you blackout
Terms:
-- STAB
-- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier
-- Stat Experience
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of effort values. You can invest in all stats until they max
out at 65535
-- DVs or Determinate Values
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of IVs (individual values), these range from 0-15
Resources:
-- Gen 1 Stat Calculator: pycosites.com/pkmn/stat_gen1.php
-- All Trainer Pokemon have IVs (DVs) of 89888 (hp, atk, def, spd, spc)
-- All Trainer Pokemon have EVs of 0
-- Gen 1 Crit Rates: www.smogon.com/rb/articles/cr...
-- Crit rate is determined by dividing base speed by 512
-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64
-- All crits have a 1/256 to fail, even if the rate is 100%
-- Crits don't multiple damage by 2, it's a formula based on level

Man this episode was incredible. I was cackling at Scott sheepishly explaining why he ended up doing what he did, feel like we know him well enough to see he will usually bite off more than he can chew and that makes for great comedy Been watching Scott for about a year and yeah this video makes it clear just how much he's improved skillwise. This was so good I'm inspired to go increase my Patreon amount. Too bad I'll have to live with the knowledge that i came 1 poke too early and I got freaking quilfish instead of Scizor

My favorite part of his explanations for delays are how the longer they go on, the faster he talks and the more his “abouts” sound like “aBOOTs.” I, a Texan, had a roommate from Manitoba at one point, and we bonded poking fun of each other’s accents, so it adds yet another nostalgia layer to these gen 1 Pokémon videos for me.

Not gonna lie, deleting fireblast isn't something I would have done. I think if I had been in his shoes I feel like it would have been better to get rid of body slam, and mimic earthquake from the sandslash then fireblast the sandslash down. Earthquake is then effective against both ninetails and jolteon, while also being a high damage physical vs Alakazam. fireblast is a STAB special attack for executor and cloyster. But having said that, hindsight is 2020, and that also doesnt really leave an answer for Lance specifically.

I love how Arcanine has absolutely nothing noteworthy about it. Not even in Galar. It isn’t the Pokémon you’d use for Burn Up strats (and those strats aren’t that great either), it is not a good Teleport Pokémon, and even before that it was never a good Pokémon. It just looked majestic.

It’s here where I think Scott should introduce a rule to not save between E4 battles in first playthroughs. Real time being inflated by this doesn’t matter as it won’t be optimal anyways. This would prevent his moveset from being strapped if he ever has to grind.

Incredible, I liked learning a little behind the scenes info but was impressed at your dedication to quality despite the absolute torture of pummeling yourself in the soul with all these playthroughs on these three. I can definitely understanding some of the frustrations with how you played, but exactly as you said there's a bit of the story behind learning these pokemon that really solidifies these videos for me. Your breakdowns of what gives these pokemon the chance for success is interesting, as is seeing how you make the process as safe and secure for each individual by optimizing. With how much you have learned it was actually nice to see you making some of these now obvious errors with the commentary of why it was silly to do, but it also demonstrates how much you have learned in just this short time. Truly, you are gaining a level of knowledge that is astounding, it is almost to a point where it's so far above me and how I perceive these games it's hard to follow but you still break it down properly which demonstrates a true understanding of the systems as well. Please don't take this as me being weary of the content, but I anticipate the day you break into something else you are equally passionate about. To see this level of care, consideration, and conviction moving into some new content would be exciting. Thanks for all the work you do, it's very wonderful.

In this video Scott faces his most fearsome and terrifying foe yet: the specter that his play really has improved and he can see it. This is absolutely one of my favorite videos on the channel so far. I think its really fascinating how rough Fire types have it for most of the game, until the Champion in which a good Fire type has such an easy time with the Champion's team. The fact his anti-Fire Pokemon have such low Special is definitely part of it.

I know a year late, but here's the best balance I've seen 1) Long form pokemon videos for the full story 2) use shorts to pull snippets of critical moments or humorous moments to pull in newer viewers 3) post 3 to 5 minute clips of the run without spoiling too much like gym battles or critical training montages like a comparison between the rival fights, such as..."who is better at rival 5 or Giovanni 2...arcanine or Ninetales..." and throw in the rapidash for a nice surprise. It's a good way to still have the full story available for psychos like me but also for shorter attention span, you still have 3 to 5 minute snippets and shorts.

Arcanine vs Ninetales is one of the most underrated Gen 1 comparisons of all times hahaha I'm glad you have done it, even if it was using your old techniques. Maybe they could have a rematch in Gen 3 or something!

The most shocking thing so far is learning that Arcanine can learn Dragon Rage, what?! 10:38 Vulpix not only had the advantage, she had the luck as well. 12:38 Oof, prepare for trouble indeed. 47:03 Oh shoot, the unthinkable happened! 1:06:20 HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER! I figured Ninetails would win when I saw she could learn Flamethrower sooner. However, I was not expecting to see Arcanine struggle so badly. Rapidash put up a decent fight, though.

Arcanine only struggled so badly because Scott deleted Fire Blast. Don't know what he was thinking.

Lol I he purposely made Arcanine struggle because of his terrible choices, that final moveset was so god awful that luck could BARELY help him. I’ve never seen someone play Pokémon so badly before lol

What a great display of three magnificent fire types. Like you mentioned, Special is definitely the key to win these challenges, but so is access to a diverse movepool. Now, both you and Jrose has served as great inspiration for myself to start doing some solo runs, and combining your rulesets. I am exclusively using Pokemon Red as the game, and I use game time and level as a baseline metric, as well as my own personal thoughts on how easy the game was to beat with that Pokemon. However, unlike Jrose, I follow your way at the start of the game, to ensure that I get a Pokemon with the best possible DV's for the playthrough (better for comparing if you take the random aspect out of it).

@@briancaster2876 I have not recorded any of the runs. Anyways, I don't have a good software for editing video, so I would have had to upload the entire thing (at 1x speed). So for now I do these for fun 😅 Maybe in the future, I will do a series of my own 😁

I really want to see more runs where the Pokemon start at their first stage and are allowed to evolve! Nobody else is doing that in challenge runs and I think it's much more satisfying when they get to end stronger!
