Do the books of ASOIAF foreshadow anything similar to the evil Daenerys heel turn that the HBO show gave us? And who is the character of Daenerys Targaryen, really?

I hope Emilia sees this and realizes that this was always the true Dany. It breaks my heart in knowing how heartbroken she was to learn that the character she carefully fostered, grew up through, and found personal strength in was reduced to something so unrecognizable in D&D's character assassination

@@mellemadswoestenburg1296 I just think about all she went through with her health and how she persevered because she knew what her character meant for others. She was a symbol of strength that many people men and women and queer folk would look up to (even beyonce had a poster of daenerys in her recording studio). It's just unreal to me how her character when from a benevolent woman who freed slaves and was a queen FOR THE PEOPLE, to becoming a "mad queen" because she's a targaryen. I always thought what made Dany "DANY" was the fact that she was not like other targaryens. She had a kind heart and unlike her ancestors who rose to power simply because it was her birthright, but because she knew that she was the only one who could break the cycle of monarchs being out of touch with the people. AAAAA it just drives me mad knowing how dirty they did her.

@@barbiana1802 Dani was always a bloodthirsty, vengeful, and violent Targaryen with questionable morals. She Crucifies every single master in Mereen indescriminantly and wants every master in Yunkai slaughtered. She makes an exception for Jorah and when he brings up her hypocrisy since he was a slave trader and she allowed him to live, she barely changes her tune. From the very beginning she is true to her house words, planning on conquoring westeros with Fire and Blood. She is bloodthirsty, cruel, and unjust. @@danajones5358 Basically what happens is that Jon suspects that Melisandre will burn Mance Rayder's son because of his King's blood. So Jon switches that babe with Gilly's babe since Mel gains nothing by sacrificing a babe with no King's blood. Gilly wants to take both of them and get away but Jon forbids it. He then proceeds to make her put her hand over the flame to prove a point and she leaves crying. Obviously this is a very complex situation but Jon gets almost no flak for this while Dany definitely would have under the same situations. According to Alys Kastark, Cregan plans to marry her then kill his brother to claim lordship of Karkhold. Then she fears that after a son is born, they will kill her so she flees the marriage and seeks protection from the Night's watch. Cregan comes to the Night's watch and Jon immediately throws him and his men into the ice cells, which are basically torture rooms with their freezing temperature. Jon the gives him an option to either join the Night's watch or be stuck in the ice cells. He also debates throwing in Janos Slynt in there to force compliance. See how complex the situations are? That's what happens when you generalize Dany's actions as "Dragon Lady uses torture and kills people, Dragon Lady mad."

It’s honestly so insulting with the Hitler imagery. Dany was a girl who went through terrible abuse throughout her life, survived, and rose up to rule an entire city, attempting to liberate those in even worse conditions than she was growing up, and putting her goals on hold. She was inspiring and strong and started off as a sex slave. Growing up she barely knew anything from suffering and poverty. She was ripped of whatever innocence she had left at only 13, still a little girl, and not even a year after losing a child, became a great and notable known throughout the world. Hitler grew up in a middle class family, got rejected from art school, and then used his fancy talking to stir up the civil unrest that was already happening and facilitated a genocide. Dany and Hitler’s personal histories are completely different. Comparing the two is just highly offensive. It feels like D&D are suggesting that Hitler also went through what Dany did and had achievements the likes of Dany before he chose to kill millions. It just disgusts me. And I know that wasn’t D&D’s intent of course, but just…Hitler imagery? Really? You’re comparing this woman who lost so much at such a young age, and then rose up barely after she was sold into sex slavery… to fucking Hitler?? There is no correlation whatsoever. I’m sorry for my poor writing skills, I just needed to rant. Take what you will from my word vomit.

Hitler's imagery is simply the "go-to" resource for Hollywood when they need to tell the public a character or group is a dangerous ruler/government system. If it worked for Star Wars, why shouldn't it work for everything else, right? The last seasons of GOT devolved into just that: cliche Hollywood tropes. Completely superficial.

I'm one of the crowd who really despised how that character was ended. Like you said, went from the savior of the free world to tyrant in only a couple of episodes. GoT was always about killing off beloved characters. Nobody was safe. It also had a nack for making characters go through good and bad phases. In our eyes they rise and fall and rise again. (very "soapy" if you ask me). But at this point we already had so many villains in the show, whom we loved to hate, we didn't need another one. I was so confused watching Dany burn literally every that wasn’t The Red Keep. Because the person she hates most in that moment is Cersei right? And I can’t imagine Dany not knowing that Cersei doesn’t really give a damn about anyone but herself, so seeing that probably wouldn’t upset her the way that it could upset a good ruler. So is she just burning the city to make Cersei sweat for a few minutes until Dany finally gets around to her? The whole time I was like, “Well if she’s gonna burn stuff down why didn’t she just start at The Red Keep?” The sequence of events and how/why it happened is really a mess.

which is why I disagree with people when they say D&D are great at adapting, they maybe good at best but great? no way, the show is good because it's based on amazing source material but also they've had a really good team of Cinematographers, Music, Acting, Directing, and everything you need to make a great show and the parts where it's D&D's job they did a mediocre job, they missed a lot of the points, symbolism, story-lines, characters and all kinds of different things that could have made the show closer to book quality but they missed it.

Daenery Targaryen season 2 on the show was completely different to the books, They made her act entitled on the show. She threatened Qarth with fire and blood on the show, in the books Qarth welcomed Dany into the city. D&D said Dany didn't care about her brother, Book Dany thinks about visery even after his death in the books. In the books Dany is very intelligent and perceptive, on the show she was a one dimensional Conqueror who took city's and did very little else. Dany didn't feed any masters to her dragons in the books, but D&D added a scene which had Dany feeding masters to her dragons. We got very little of Danys child like innocence and compassionate side on the show, in the books Dany is arguably the most benevolent character and thinks about the downtrodden with every decision she makes. No doubt about it, Dany is a flawed character, she ain't perfect, but so is every other character in this series, but D&D held Daenery up to a different standard than everybody else. The double standards in the show were shocking and the show fans didn't see any of those double standards. Interesting how everyone was on the Jon snow bandwagon, but jons the heir to the throne they said. Sorry but I don't believe in birthright and I don't believe Jon should get the throne just because Rheagers and lyanna had sex. The throne should be earnt and Daenery earnt that throne more than any other character on the show.

I always thought that Dany getting upset at Jon after he revealed his parentage to her was not true to her character. Yeah, Dany wants to claim the iron throne and having a male relative more senior in line would make that a lot harder for her, but Daenerys wants the iron throne not because she thinks it’s rightfully hers (which she kinda does) or because she wants wealth or power. All her life she grew up running from place to place, listening to her last living relative who was almost always cruel to her tell her that one day they would go home. One day they would HAVE a home. Dany in the books doesn’t really crave the Red Keep and Kings Landing. She wants the big house with the red door and the lemon tree outside her window. The childhood she’d never known. But the house with the red door is far behind her now, and without anywhere else to feel like she truly belongs, Daenerys sails for the home her last family promised her would one day be hers. And when she gets there, she might find Jon and when she does, she won’t think “Oh no, a competitor”. I think she’ll think “finally, I found family”. :)
@campbellsoup93
@campbellsoup93 10 ай бұрын
Imma have to disagree. I thought that elwas well within her character (at least show wise). She's essentially based her entire sense of self around her being the 'rightful heir' to the Iron throne. Every time she talks to someone she waxes poetic about how it's hers by blood and birthrights. Now she finds out that Jon is a legitimate Targ and thus ahead of her in the line of succession. Her sense of self is threatened. If she isn't the legitimate heir to the throne, if it isn't hers by birthright, than who is she? What has everything she's done up to this point been for? Add to that the fact that Jon is beloved by the Northerners, far more than she wcould ever hope to be and suddenly her position becomes even more tenuous.

@@campbellsoup93 Show wise this is solid, but Dany from the books only wants the throne because Viserys wanted it so badly. She’s grown up in poverty hearing stories of how their family once ruled a continent and produced many decent rulers. At first, she believes that her father being The Mad King is a lie made up by their enemies because Viserys told her that was what it was. In the books she says “I want to make my kingdom beautiful, to fill it with fat men and pretty maids. I want to see my people smile as I ride by, the way Viserys said they smiled for my father.” Daenerys finds herself alone after the deaths of her brother, husband and son, and can’t have any children according to Mirri, so she goes after the throne as a way to be close to a family she never knew and to do what Viserys said they needed to do since now she’s the last Targaryen who can. She has no family and can’t be an innocent child like she wishes, so she goes and protects innocent children being hurt by slavery and frees the Unsullied who were hurt as boys by this system. She later learns that Viserys was very wrong about her father, and so she strives to be a better ruler than he was by staying in Meereen since she feels responsible for why it’s so chaotic and dangerous there now. I can see her maybe going down a similar downfall in the books that she did in the show, but the Dany in the books that exist now would be happy that she’s not alone anymore if she learned about Jon. She could have a family to love and to love her in return and she wouldn’t be the last of her house. I think she’d be overjoyed.

I’ve always thought it more likely that Jon Con would destroy kings landing. Especially given the fact that the bells are what trigger Dany’s rampage in the show. Jon Con has constant ptsd flashbacks to the battle of the bells, hearing the bells and seeing that event as the catalyst to his entire exile and failure of Rhaegar. Further more when he thinks back to that day he wishes he had been more ruthless, threatening and killing civilians in an attempt to find out where Robert was hiding.

@@gdhuertas07 Probably more likely that Daenerys is in a position to take King's Landing, the city rings its bells in surrender, Jon Connington goes nuts and does something war criminalish in response, Dany is taken aback by being attacked despite the city allegedly surrendering, has her dragon(s) breathe fire, and then the city goes up in flames from all of the buried wildfire caches that Jaime never did anything about. I don't think Daenerys will end up as the villain (in the readers' eyes anyway), but one of her flaws is that she has a rosy-eyed view about her family (largest example is when she refuses to let Ser Barristan tell her about how bad her father was) and their right to rule, and she needs that wake-up call to have King's Landing blow up in her face and then have someone tell her (Jaime or Brienne) that yep, this is your family's legacy, and this is the result of your father's cruelty and your need to reclaim your "birthright". D&D wrote the last season (or three) around a few ideas that they wanted to have. They wanted the scene where Jon stabs Dany, and they wanted to have a scene where we see a dragon destroy something on a large scale (the spectacle is the most important part). They wanted to subvert expectations, vis-a-vis Arya. Everything else was just writing in the gaps that were left by the pillars that they had established. It didn't matter if it made sense (to them), they just wanted to get to their big set pieces. It just sucks that they had started out so good only to have them drop the ball at the end.

Interesting how everyone was on the Jon snow bandwagon, but jons the heir to the iron throne they said. Sorry but I don't believe in birthrights and I don't believe Jon should get the throne just because Rheager and lyanna had sex. I think the thing that annoys me the most about season 8 and all the ways in which D&D don't understand women, is Dany's fall into villainy basically being the result of her feeling insecure that the North doesn't love her the way they love Jon Snow. Or the fact that Jon also doesn't appear to love her back. (Why doesn't he and the North LUUUUVRE ME, I think I'll burn this place in the South down to the ground) I hate that Cersei was basically left to just... drink wine and cry. Please. You think this bitch who burned down the Sept is just going to casually cry and let rocks fall on her head? I hate that Sansa was basically turned into a Stepford wife with no feelings, emotions, facial expressions. Because being a 'strong female character' to D&D basically means IDK, acting like a man? Being cold with no feelings? (Appreciating how being assaulted in all forms 'makes you stronger' grrrr) Arya was really the only one of our strong female characters D&D didn't completely ruin. (or Lyanna Mormont) Is this because neither of those women were 'traditionally' female, with female interests? Wouldn't surprise me. Basically a long way of saying, OF COURSE D&D ruined Dany. They had no idea who she was. They had no idea how to write for her once they ran out of source material. Season 8 was a hot mess, and I have never thought that end for Dany was deserved. Arya was also ruined. In the books she's a small girl who is angry, yes, but she's also insecure, friendly, and feels very lonely. She's always yearning to find her family or make a "pack" with friends she meets along the way. She's also early stated to be bullied by Sansa (called "horseface"), which has led her to have very low self-esteem. Despite being a noble she doesn't mind befriending the smallfolk (other nobles find them disgusting). Instead the show just turned her into this "muh psychopath" or Sansa's bodyguard, turning into some dumb cliche about how tomboys aren't as good "feminine women".

And better not talk about the fact that they reduced to a one-dimensional psychopath who always cares about revenge when Arya in the books is so much more. And the way she treated Jon…horrific.

That's what I've always thought. with Daenerys failing to take King's Landing and accidentally setting the city on fire, because of the wildfire that was hidden underneath the ground, that would justify the north mistrusting her like they did on the show. As we well know, in the Worl of Ice and Fire, the further the news travels, the more twisted it becomes. perhaps in Winterfell the news would be that Daenerys deliberately burnt thousands of people in King's Landing to set an example on her enemies. Perhaps they would believe she is as mad, if not more mad than her father was. The north had no reason to treat Daenerys like they did in season 8. she gave the north every reason to trust her by topping her own conquest and showing incredible selflessness for the greater good. she literally sacrificed her own army and dragons to save Winterfell, and still she was mistrusted and not welcomed as she deserved to have been. having the stark being a bunch of mean girls towards Daenerys for no reason still triggers me. and for Sansa, who is supposed to be a smart character, being mean to Daenerys has no tactical reason. she was the most powerful person in the world.

Some succeeded, some failed, most have mixed results, but it's the effort as I see it." -GRRM (I did that by heart so it may be a little off) This quote alone puts Daenerys in the hero category. I see others claim all the time that Dany is a villain because "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" when GRRM's quote disproves that. Daenerys liberated the Unsullied for the sole purpose of ending their torture, she cries alone in her cabin after she slaps Ser Jorah because of all the horrors she heard. Unless Dany is lying to herself and crying fake tears all alone, her heart is with the slaves. Her effort alone is the most heroic in ASOIAF. I'll never understand her villainization in the fandom.

Dany is definitely a hero character, who in the end fails, but at no point is she actually evil. I don't even know where this idea comes from, since its neither stated or portrayed that way in the show, and neither did DnD ever say anything like that. I think the villanization comes mostly from fans that are frustrated with the people that vehemently defend her and claim the ending was character assassination or stuff like that, which it absolutely wasn't. She always had a tendency to do radical things in affect, when stressed, emotional and then pushed. She also quite young still at the end, like at maximum 20 by the time of the last book, if not younger. But even while she burns down Kings Landing, she is not evil, and she is not mad, yet. She is just extremely stressed and emotionally vulnerable at that point, as well as very frustrated, and she acts clearly in affect, not out of any evil intentions. Its only afterwards that, still not evil, but having gone mad, as a result of what she did. After burning down the city, there were only two ways how she could deal with it, as the character that she is, either go all in and try to justify it and going mad in the process, or have a massive emotional mental breakdown and kill herself. Some characters like Tywin (who did pretty much the same thing twice on a smaller scale, out of pure calculation, and then wrote a song about it) could just go on afterwards. But Dany has a lot of empathy and a good heart, she cannot go on in any sane way after doing that. Also, the quote about good intentions paving the path to hell actually applies to her perfectly, even with Georges quote. Because it is exactly about this kind of situation, where good intentions can lead to bad deeds, they don't have to, but sometimes they do, and people with good intentions end up doing something bad. It does not mean that good intentions are bad in any way, the quote is about good intentions in itself don't justifying anything, or necessarily leading to good outcomes. And its not the first time this holds true for her. When she took Mereen, she crucified a lot of masters, basically torturing them to death. Which would be defentable, IF she actually got the people that were firmly behind this crime and pushing it. But Mereen has a council (like greek city states senates), and there was a minority (who knows how big exactly) who were very much against this gruesome act, and they fought and voted against it, but were overruled. Dany just crucified them at random, including those that were against this crime that they were brutally tortured to death for, so by definition, innocents. She also torpedoed her own rule in Mereen with this, because those Masters who were against crucifying those children, were the ones that were most likely to actually work and cooperate with her, and accept the abolishment of slavery. Hiz'dar zo Loraq was one of those whose father was crucified by her, despite him trying to stop the crime he was punished for from happening. And he STILL tried to work with her. But many other Sons in his position might have joined the Harpies instead.
@princessshei9171
@princessshei9171 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jarnauga It was absolutely a character assassination, especially to those of us who are book fans. Daenerys only ever took violent actions against those who were evil, the people of King's Landing were innocents and she knew this. Daenerys put off her attack on KL in season 7 specifically because she didn't want innocents caught in the crossfire. She was able to completely avoid the citizens and their homes up until she won then decided to firebomb the city which allowed Cersei to almost escape and put off the victory that was years in the making. It made no sense for her character to go from defending the weak and innocent even if she took it too far sometimes, to directly massacring the weak and innocent because she heard some bells that she had no traumatic connection to. Taking out innocents after a flawless victory was so contrived and very obviously a poor attempt to make Daenerys a villain in a snap. D&D retconned her entire story to make it seem like she was a mad tyrant all along instead of inexperienced and learning as she went. They even retconned Jon willingly bending the knee when she had already sworn her strength to him for the Long Night, to her forcing him to bend the knee for her help. They retconned what happened between the Starks and Targaryens by having Tyrion say "remember what happened the last time a Targaryen came North" when the last Targ who went North was Good Queen Alysanne. The season opened with a c*ck joke ffs. I cannot take anyone who defends the writing of D&D, seriously. Season 8 was rushed and terribly written to get to an ending that will go down in history as one of the worst. As for the books, the crucifixion of the masters was specifically done to the leaders and she ended up taking them down on her own because she is self aware. The "Hizdahr's good slave owning father" plot was just D&D being apologists and trying to frame Dany as the irrational one rather than the masters who eviscerated and crucified children alive just to send a message. That never happens in the books. Every single concession that Dany makes in the books is in the name of peace. She let herself get walked on and pushed to allow slavery outside Meereen again because she wanted to protect her freedmen and stop their murders. Her problem in the books is that she's not ruthless enough, not the other way around. D&D wanted to push this terribly centrist narrative that all violence is bad no matter what when GRRM very firmly believes in righteous violence. He's not as anti-war as people seem to think and they apply this idea to his novels by trying to frame Dany as the bad guy for violently (only to the oppressors) upending a thousands of years old system built on human suffering. That CANNOT be achieved by asking nicely alone, that's plain unrealistic and has never happened that way in real history. Every chapter in ADWD points to the "peace" in Meereen being false and undermining everything she fought so hard for. She's finally realized by the end of ADWD that she will need to go to war to make the world a better place and save her people from suffering. That is the human heart in conflict with itself that George was going for. D&D twisted George's complex story and regurgitated a mess that was very obviously influenced by their own political views and we all know how that worked out for them. Also, Dany is only 15-16 by the end of ADWD. She was sold off at 13, found out she was pregnant on her 14th birthday, then went through the full 8 months of pregnancy, the trek through the Red Waste, then the stay in Quarth so probably turned 15 in that time, then went on to conquer Slaver's Bay which took months of marching and gathering. She's still a kid but she's made incredible achievements for her age. The books aren't going down at all like the show. Given Cersei's direct parallels with The Mad King, fAegon in Westeros, Euron and Victarion with the dragonbinder, JonCon with greyscale madness and bells haunting his memory, and the Dornish organizing plot, KL is likely to already be destroyed by the time she arrives. She still has a lot to do in Essos and that includes burning the inner city of Volantis where only the Old Blood can live. Book Dany would never burn down KL after she had already won it.

@John Jaxson "It's the effort as I see it." Idk I feel like it's common sense that killing hundreds of men, women, and children because they don't accept you as a ruler is A LOT different than killing slavers who refuse to back down to free thousands of enslaved men, women, and children who had suffered for generations. The outcome of her war on slavery, as stated by freedmen in the books, is far better than the time they were enslaved. Even with all the hardship that came post-revolution they still wanted Dany to continue fighting the slavers and not stop her war. That doesn't make her a villain at all, she is a hero, and she sure as hell isn't going to needlessly burn down King's Landing in the books. GRRM himself shot down the theory that she would burn the Water Gardens which has all of the same pointers as the KL theory.

The mission Dany is being set up to accepting has been summed up quite succinctly by Beau the 5th. “Planting trees who’s shade we (she) will never see.” As someone who also had their childhood taken from them by adults who saw me as a tool for their benefit rather than a human I admire Dany for working hard to not become the kind of person that subjugated her. “It happened to me so why should it be better/different for you?” Has always been a mentality that I despise. Unfortunately I’m not as resilient as this fictional character. While I am nothing like those who abused me, I am bitter and have lost faith in humanity as a whole. Thank you to GRRM for giving us characters we can be inspired by. Thank you also to David Lightbringer for shedding light on this specific character. P.S. I completely relate to Danny thinking she must be a monster if her dragons are. My mother is a light lawful evil, if I’m being kind. I’m always afraid that I’m just like her. My father is selfish and neglectful, more chaotic neutral than anything else. Given my life examples, I’ve always been hyper critical of my own personality. I often assume I am a monster and constantly push myself to be more than where I came from. I’m also extremely critical of myself when I feel I have not met this self imposed expectation.

The character of Daenerys is George RR Martin's response to Tolkein's idealization of war: "The war that Tolkien wrote about was a war for the fate of civilization and the future of humanity, and that’s become the template. I’m not sure that it’s a good template, though. The Tolkien model led generations of fantasy writers to produce these endless series of dark lords and their evil minions who are all very ugly and wear black clothes. But the vast majority of wars throughout history are not like that." -George RR Martin

The very first thing we learned in Game of Thrones was "He who passes the sentence should swing the sword". This was a big hint. Daenerys sure passes alot of sentences along the way. But has her lackeys or the dragons do the killing for her. Thus it gets easier. She goes so far as in season 4 she ordered a whole city to be butchered. Thousands of people. When Jorah learns of it he manages to talk some sense into her. Doesnt change the fact what she was prepared to do. In Astapor she ordered the Unsullied to butcher children. "Slay the masters, anyone who holds a whip or wears a Tokar. But harm no child under 12". On a quick glance this sounds great. But when we look closer we realize the Unsullied will kill 12 year old children just for wearing Tokars. No way around this. This is how the writer intended it, subtle. We were meant to root for her, not meant to notice this yet. But the hints are there. 163 children were crucified by the Masters of Meereen. Instead of searching for the ones directly responsible for this she just decides to match the number. Has 163 Masters (randomly) crucified. Unhinged, there is no universe where this would pass for actual justice. Sure she passed many righteus judgements but this is how the writer intended it so it wouldnt be too obvious. And I didnt even mention all of the questionable ones. Also, the last time we see her in the books she is in the desert hallucinating. About bells. Hmmm, I wonder what bells. And the ending comes a full circle as Jon lives out his uncle's teaching. He who passes the sentence should swing the sword. All clearly planned from the beginning by George R R Martin himself. Moreover her going to make war on foreign lands she never even set foot on (to go kill people to gain power), just based on a birthright. Not righteous. One of the biggest themes in GOT is who should rule and why. We were supposed to learn a birthright isnt a great way to choose a ruler. Thats why that system was changed with King Bran. Why not just accept what her story was really about?

The Dany that comes from the mind of George R.R. Martin is the real Dany. As with all the other GoT characters. The characters from the TV show have had outside influences that are quite honestly sub par. While this brought George the attention he rightfully deserves, it also detracts from his creation by tainting it with inferior and unnecessary plot changes and character developments.

I think you’re wrong about FAegon vs Dany. Daenerys is the younger, more beautiful queen; she’s Cersei’s foil. So it’s going to be Cersei against Daenerys. By the time Dany arrives in Westeros Cersei will already have killed FAegon (blowing up the city with wildfire). The cheering crowd is probably the people of KL cheering FAegon while Cersei is on the throne. Also, Daenerys has still a lot to do in Essos, before sailing for Westeros. I really believe that, by the time Dany arrives in Essos, KL will already be a pile of ashes. I think the whole FAegon thing is more about Jon than Daenerys anyway. People will really believe that FAegon is the real deal, the son of Rhaegar. That will cause people to not believe that Jon is the real son of Rhaegar. Like Cersei is the foil of Dany, so is FAegon, in a way, the foil of Jon.

Omg, this was so insightful! I thought I understood Dany's character quite well, and in parts you mentioned I was like 'yup yup, that's true' and for others I was like 'holy fuck OF COURSE!' Like I knew of how her dream of the red door/ home melded into Viserys' dream of the iron throne, and how she became a liberator of slaves because she was a slave, but I didn't know she was actually APART of the whole slavery system of being sold in Pentos; or how she would most likely mimic/ parallel Stannis' story; or that there were SO MANY clues for her NOT going after the throne, and that being like, her 'lie' (something a character believes they want/ is true that they have to overcome). And fuck, holy shit, her bringing her dragons to life finally makes sense now! George RR Martin said it was supposed to be a one off event, and other people say it's to do with a blood sacrifice, but the MAIN reason like, symbolically, was to fight/ go against the Night King. I also liked how you dismantled the idea of Dany being two things - the mother/ the dragon, when really she's both! I feel like it would have been so cool for her enemies in the show to depict her life this, as turning from one to the other, affectively saying that she has a dark side and she'll become evil, rather than both of these 'sides' actually being one/ intrinsic to each other. I also loved the mama bear myth/ mythology, that was also super interesting! I also didn't realize how wise she was also, or self-reflective. I've seen a lot of videos on how Sansa wises up, and knew that Dany was comparatively much more aware of how the world worked than Sansa was at the start of the books/ show. But I've never seen people mention these qualities in videos, or anywhere else -- I would have never thought of Dany as being wise before I saw this video, or self-reflective, but she is. It's probably also due to, as you mentioned, the show making her more arrogant when entering Qarth. Because it's a TV show, you also see less of her internal thoughts, like her judgements about the gold collar, or wanting to go home. I don't know if she even discusses the red door in the show? The fact that they didn't write that into her dialogue is foreshadowing that they didn't understand her character.

Except Sansa never actually wises up,never acknowledges that she made mistakes,the mistakes she's made or even knows she's done wrong especially in her bullying of Arya and mistreatment of Jon even while she's posing as the bastard daughter of Petyr Baelish in the Vale.Sansa is neither self-aware,self-reflective,or self-critical like Dany is,and even if Sansa does have those rare moments,it lack meaning (since it's doesn't address the point and root of issue with Sansa inherently as a person and character) and doesn't compare to just how hard Dany is on herself.All Sansa can think about is how it hurts her feeling for Harry the Heir to call her a bastard even though she knows isn't actually a bastard but only posing as one for her protection from Cersei.Sansa's character more or less remains stagnant and set up to progressively turn darker for worse as she is heading down a darker path currently poisoning her disabled cousin Sweet Robin,who is younger and traumatized but she finds annoying regardless.Not to mention Sansa never acknowledges,recognize or even aware of her privilege even as a hostage in King's Landing and living as Littlefinger's bastard daughter in the Vale surrounded by nobility due to her appearance,which is probably why she has the audacity to organize a big feast wasting most of the food stores that is needed for the incoming winter.Not mention Sansa is pathetically delighted at a ridiculously huge,tall lemon cake,if I remember correctly like within 8-12 feet tall as a giant,that the cook apparently made at her request according to Sansa's chapters.I'm not surprised this is how Sansa turned out since GRRM implied that he created Sansa to sow discord among the Starklings because the Stark siblings all got along too well,which is unrealistic in families.Not to mention if you take GRRM's original outline of the series into account,Sansa ends up marrying and having kids with Joffrey,betraying her own family the Starks for the Lannisters she sides with,then ultimately being killed by Jamie.

You did such a good job here and the analysis of the character was spot on. It makes sense, especially when you know that one of the major themes that G.Martin wrote into the story was the question of power (in political sense) and what it takes to be a good leader. The iron throne is the symbol of that power. I feel like most characters in the books who are given rule are examples of good and bad ruling traits, and most of them lack at least one necessary characteristic for staying in power. Ned Stark is a stereotypical fantasy perfect leader (like Aragorn), but he is not fit for the "real" world, where people are not just black and white, he lacks cunning and is easily killed. He knows that a good leader must exact punishment, but in case of Cersei, his badly placed empathy killed him. Robert had strength of a warrior, but is generally a bad politician. Tywin is generally capable, but lacks morals and emotional connection (which really gets him killed). Tyrion, when he is made the hand of the king, is one of the best leaders in the story, but he is physically unfit and is simply disliked by people, which is the very reason why he couldn't last as the Hand. Stannis is too stern. Cersei has so many bad traits, I don't want to get into that. But the way that Deny is written, she seems to have everything. She is moral and just like Ned, but not to the point of being naive. When people who watched the show accuse her of being a killer from the start, this is where they miss the point. She knows that she has to use violence and exact punishment sometimes, but she is very far from injoying the violence itself. She has what everybody else lacks: she is moral, a cunning politician, she listens to advice but has her on mind, she has raw power (dragons), and is generally loved. Season 8 was bad, but what I believe they did right, was guessing that Westeros would be her downfall, and also guessing the general attitude people had towards her. She will be seen as an alien, a female leader, someone from the far East and remnant of the past, who is backed up by mythological creatures and foreign armies.

A fantastic piece on the real Daenerys Targeryen! I do think that she will incinerate at least a large chunk of Kings Landing when she comes, but accidentally, as you alluded to earlier in the video. Wildfire caches either placed by Cersei or even left over from the Mad King exploding. Even if she aimed her dragonfire solely at the Red Keep it could still go wrong, or simply even her dragons overdoing it. She doesn't have full control of them, perhaps this shows later on. Also, whilst you can pretty much guarantee the professionalism of the Unsullied, and guarantee no civilian casualties caused by them, the same cannot be said of the Dothraki, if they come with her in the books like they did on the show. There will be rape, looting and murder aplenty by the Dothraki during the taking of Kings Landing, and probably afterwards as well. That, for sure, would turn people against her, even if she gives strict orders to not rape and gelds every man who does, she'll be seen as the leader of savages and monsters. No matter what, when something goes wrong, people will blame her. I think the tragedy of Daenerys is that she wants to be a good ruler but she will never be accepted: she's a woman, she's foreign (whether in Essos or Westeros she's basically considered a foreigner) with an army made up of foreign eunuchs and barbarian Dothraki, she wants what is best for the most vulnerable but this often goes against the wishes of the lords and nobility. I think that even when she goes north and fights the Others, playing a big role in saving Westeros, she'll likely get no credit. She'll probably go down in Westerosi history as the Mad Queen, even though it's not true.

@@alessandrofracasso6 Okay, maybe "accepted" wasn't the roght word. None of them embraced her as queen, though. None loved her, and I think that shocked and dismayed her. They tried to assassinate her character, but I just cling to her and love her even more. I can totally see why turning Daenerys into a huge villain is a more action-y and shocking than the likely true ending. Where the only pure soul in the story sacrifices herself to save the world. Even given the ending of the show, it still should've been expanded upon. How tragic her story was... Instead they killed her and rushed to the end and never spoke of her and her incredible sacrifice (in show). She lost so much just to save Winterfell.

Daenerys is George RR Martin's response to Tolkein's entire conception of what has become the classic "heroic fantasy story". George uses the character of Daenerys to illustrate the difficult, existential question of "what happens after you have WON the war?": "Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone - they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?" - George RR Martin

Love this video! Goes to show the kindness and intelligence that Dany kept throughout the books and how D&D disregarded that part of her. I think that in the show, Daenerys is one of the characters that were half-baked and somewhat ruined. I think Book Dany and Book Sansa have that in common. I'm really hoping you'll make a book vs. show for Sansa, cuz a lot of her development was left out and it would be nice to see you analyze it and how it might hint at Sansa's ending.

I remember on my first read, I thought Dany was being incredibly foolish to stay in Meereen. Why would she waste time going to Westeros in an attempt to change an entire region's slave trade? Now that I've finished uni, studying psychology and human services, I realise that Dany made the most compassionate choice. She sacrificed what she thought was most important to her in order to help people being victimised. The amount of strength and compassion that took is really inspiring. We should all try to find that much in our own hearts. I love how I've grown up so much while processing this series. I know I'll keep growing as a person and find new aspects of these books to love on future readings

I've always thought danys true want and need is simply just a safe place to call a home and live peacefully. Her desire to save people and avenge her familys legacy are just things shes forced herself to think is essential, due to her past and influences and events of her life. The show made her some pyscho who wanted nothing more than a throne and would kill anyone even babies for it... No person with such compassion as dany would willingly and happily kill thousands of innnocents just to get a throne she doesnt even really want, the same person who lements her own dad and past kings for being cunts. I truly believe when dany realises that to take the throne would cause more harm than good to the common folk she will turn away from that goal. Wether she realises too late or not doesnt matter. Im really high so if none of this made sense im sorry but until im sobwr i cant correct anything right now

Everytime I see people say "the only thing shes ever wanted since she was a child was her birthright, the throne" I get so mad because no, all she ever wanted was a red door and a lemon tree! Even in the show where they never mention the door and the tree, she doesnt start really wanting it till after viserys dies. But also, to be the smallest amount of fair to the show, even show dany wasnt ok with killing babies and children until that final episode. And when she does slaughter all those innocents, it's not even for the throne or getting the throne 😂

This video game up suggested to me when I happened to be choosing something to put in the background while I worked on my asoiaf bullet journal and I am so happy it was! Book Dany is one of my favorite character. One of the biggest things I think is missed when understanding book Dany is her age. She is still only 15 in ADWD and a 15-year-old leading, ruling, and killing is fundamentally different than a 25-year-old doing the same things. While she is treated like an adult woman her world, book Dany still holds a childlike naivete and optimism often caused by a youthful lack of foresight that I think will definitely play a role in her future book fate.
