Has Vespa's latest marketing strategy left you cold? I'm rippin' up the city on my Vespa GTS Super Sport and talking about Piaggio's puzzling attempt to bring in a new demographic. Maybe you're a 20-something supermodel. If not, come for the rant, and stay for the beautiful weather...

Okay so I'm a model for a living, and a lot of my friends are 20-30yo models, and they all love Vespas. I know a handful of people who ride them. I also like Vespas, even though I ride motorcycles. It's okay that you aren't the person that those specific ads are meant for. Every ad isn't meant to work on every person. Older people already buy Vespas, they are actively trying to attract a younger audience, obviously.

Geez you made me laugh! I just picked-up my GTS 300 SS last Wednesday ... !!!!!! (Arancio Impulsivo) Wow! I now understand what they all told me: "you will love it more than you thought you would". ;-)

Vespa has always sought to ensconce itself in a chic urban niche more in line with Prada than with old farts like us Bug. I am happy to break that mold….

Same. I am very comfortable being an old fart. I guess I can understand why Vespa wouldn't put someone like me in their ads. Can you imagine? Actually. Maybe that's my next video. I'll get a photographer and I'll redo all of Vespa's marketing. I'll send it to them and say, "You can use this for free..." Then they'll come, repossess my Vespa, and sue me for being terrible. Best video EVER.

@@bugscooters Well, if you are going in that direction, make sure that in any riding clips you're wearing a Speedo. You need some sense of reserved dignity in that chic, modern marketing world.

Love the video and your sense of humour. I want to make a comment and don’t take it personally but riding on 2 wheels on damp roads is challenging for the best riders. I enjoy all your videos and have become a Vespa fan. Stay upright and l hope l haven’t said anything wrong. ☮️🖖✌️

@@bugscootersAwesome. I just get a little concerned as I lost my spleen many many years ago when a car stopped in front of me. I had a close friend the day after tragically hit by a truck. I normally don’t say anything but I thought I might comment as it is easy to forget the idiocy of some car drivers. Keep on keeping on and love your vids. Cheers from Australia.☮️✌️😉

Exactly. No you, not me. They are not marketing to overweight boomers or stressed out 40 something GenX. They are marketing to young people and it is in line with the history of Vespa marketing. Young trendy people, models, actors. I think its excellent. HD on the other hand is an example of what not to do. HD marketed their bikes to one generation, tried to stifle innovation and encouraged an association with organised crime groups. HD will eventually fail, Piaggio will survive.

Bug, your rant, sounds like Lewis Black! LOL! I agree with you on most of your points. Especially, about the Justin Bieber Vespa Scooter! I put 3200 miles on my 2023 Vespa GTS Super last year. I just started putting some miles on it. I just bought a new to me, 2010 Triumph Speed Triple, that I'm registering tomorrow. I had a 2009 previously and loved it. I hope to get a lot of riding in, on both of them this year. Enjoy your ride and be safe.

We now live in a World where major corporation's like certain beer manufacturers, have taken the previously "forbidden" route & found it to be less than a clever move. Lets hope the brands we love don't fall for the same trap. 😢

Alright Mr. Bug, this was a worthy video, you hit the nail. In my place, most people buying new vespas have either rich dads, or they are like me: late 40s, established job, home, wife, kids and most importantly - a car. If a young guy outside of this demographic wants a scooter, , they'll buy something cheap, not a Vespa. Vespa is looooong past the days it catered to your everyday nurse, priest, blue collar dude. My thoughts. So, Carpuride is BS, eh?

I know of at least 4 shops that would get sent the Bieber scoots and ended up removing the decals to just make them sellable.

Marketing to people like me.. I am 90 lbs, 20s, and love motorcycles/scooters. I also think those ads seem weird though... its like they just went to some 20s model agency and told them they had to model with Vespas in the picture.

@@bugscooters I love trying things out, but I mainly just ride my Rebel 1100. I had a PCX 150 before that, almost got a Vespa, but was having fun trying out things with a lot more power and went for the Rebel

Vespsa's target market be described as; and I'm stealing this from FortNine: Young, early 20s, debtt free and has six figures of expendable income. ಠ⁠_⁠ಠ She is a green environmentalist, but always wished to enter competitive power sports... Lives in a city, but has a garage... Basically they are marketing to a group of people that does not exist...

I will NEVER reveal my secret. Sidenote. Suno.com is $8 a month and it's the best $8 a month I've ever spent on anything. It is so much fun, ladybug and I have lost hours of our lives generating songs and laughing our tits off. I have some really choice scooter songs in the bin. It's gonna be a bumpy summer!

If I had to rely on their afs, I'd never have bought one. But it's Italian & marketing and reality does not apply. But for vision: suggest an ber visir for grey days!! And little squeegee things you can slip over gloved finger for a wiper... Or RainX for visors....

GenZ (27 and under and don't know who Justin Bieber is and more importantly don't care) cannot afford cars and they are not happy and Vespa is not the cheapest scooters in the world. Kymco and Harley just formed a conglomerate to sell electrics and it is currently #4 in the U.S. which means it has a lot of room to move up when many people can't afford $45k for a car. I think scooters in all their various flavors are going to become popular with a lot of people, but GenZ first. They are not selling to young rich, pretty people, they are saying that if you ride a Vespa you will be young, rich, and pretty looking. I am not a Vespa person. They are cool. I learned to ride on a Kymco Like 200i which is 'like" a Vespa, but they remind me of Apple, and I am also not an Apple person. There is a sort of cult like following for both that has an ick factor, but Vespa is going to be very popular with the same people as Apple and for that reason. They are overpriced enough (but still far cheaper than the cheapest car) to have people who buy for status, buy them. I will still be happily riding my Kymco X-Town 300 though because I am a value shopper, not a status shopper. ps. Why would they market Vespas to people who already own them? I have seen people riding scooters like the people in those ads alot and all other kinds of people, in China where there are 350 million daily scooter riders (versus the 10 million total two-wheeled vehicle riders currently in the U.S.). We need vastly more people riding bikes in the U.S. and many of the people who do ride bikes (Vespa owners excluded) are extremely bad for marketing. They are going with the opposite. Now, we need to speak over on camera #2. I am older than you for sure and I need to tell you, its not Vespa making you feel old. You are actually old. lol😉

Vespas and motorcycles seem less expensive now that the average new car transaction is nearly 50k. Maybe people will realize how convenient and cheap (compared to a car) it is to ride a small motorbike for city transportation

they probably hired some young marketer who told them that they should focus on having a youthful sex appeal to market to city slicking millennial. Truth is us scooter riders don't fit neatly into any marketing category which makes it hard to find a solid target. I think it's better they focus on the vespa as an artisan/ heritage product instead of trying to go to the 'hip/youthful' brand image. Also what are your thoughts on the burgman 650? It's my current ride.

Piaggio really know about marketing. Here in the UK their 300cc non-Vespa scooter is called the Beverly. Italians are all about style. Sometimes they forget about substance.

@@bugscooters Sometimes enthusiasts forget that they are not a company's main audience. Most Vespa owners won't know what CC their scooter has, but they will know it is a really nice colour and the chrome bits are shiny.

​@@clangerbasher I tend to agree to a certain point. But with Vespas, at least in America, I find that the majority of owners fall into the enthusiast category. If you're not a scooter enthusiast, and more particularly, a Vespa enthusiast, you're probably not going to pay the premium to own a Vespa. Granted, being an enthusiast, perhaps my perspective is off. Wouldn't be the first time.

Bug you know its not about you right? Like most brands, Vespa is trying to appeal to a younger audience . If you ever walk through a mall, its all targeted towards the youth demographic. Its always been that way. What they really need is another film like Roman Holiday (1953), where they can show case their rides and sell a couple billion units.

For some really bizarre reason you Americans seem to think that the marketing of a international European brand should be in any way focused on the typical buying public in the US. A rather niche marker compared to the brands sales in Europe or Asia for example. And this kind of marketing is effective imho, especially in Asia where the real money is made in the scooter market. Btw, this is not criticism, this is just an observation.

I totally agree with you. However, Vespa has a US-focused version of their website, so it would be easy enough for them to target their US marketing specifically to this audience. That said, you're right that the US is a niche market for Vespa. On the whole, this audience is going to opt for the cheaper alternative IF they're going to buy a scooter at all. Scooters are seen as kind of a joke here, I'm afraid, because this is MERICUH and we like our big, smoke-belching trucks and Harleys and so on... And hamburgers. I guess the point is, I'd love to see Vespa upend that and try and really make some headway here in the states. Not because I want to see everyone here riding a Vespa (I do though) but because I'd love to see a company come in and change the American mindset a bit and really get us looking at scooters in general as a viable means of transport.

@@bugscooters Maybe we should just face it, we are both to old to be of any interest for a company like that in a marketing sense. I live in Belgium, western Europe. A colder and wetter climate then Italy and the south of Europe where scooters are historically omnipresent. The narrow streets in our historical cities are getting more and more congested and population density is already very high, so the use of scooters is on the rise even here in the north. Actually, i gain about 30 min a day on my commute compared to my car and that's attractive to more and more people, even here in the colder regions. I have never been to the US, so it's maybe a prejudice, but i imagine that your city's have a far more car friendly street architecture then ours. So maybe people have less incentive to use scooters where you live. And about Vespa in particular in the US. I imagine that the max speed of the traffic on the highways is comparable but that the average American spends a lot more time on the highway. Personally, i use a classical wide frame vespa 2 stroke Vespa in town and a Asian large bore scooter for longer highway trips. And to be honest, on the highway i do prefer a stronger engine and wheel diameter then the 300 GTS scooters some of my friends use. On the other hand, the light 2 stroke Vespa is heaven in town. Anyway, enough rambling, enjoy your rides and keep promoting the lifestyle.

But then all those young and stylish Italians sees the Vespa US site and go "EWWW!" And Piaggio's home market share takes a dive.
