Who is Wealthier? A doctor or electrician?
In this video I'm going to explore the career path of a doctor and an electrician. As a spoiler...they both end up very well off!
Both will be starting off at just 18 years old. One wants to be an electrician, the other wants to be a doctor. After all things are considered, who do you think will be wealthier by the age of 50?
To do this comparison I'm assuming that both professions are able to save 50% of their take-home pay and they invest it at an 8% return. I'm also going to assume that their salaries increase over time with the rate of inflation.
First I look at the electrician. The electrician is 18 and starts making $12 per hour. Since the electrician never went to college,
the electrician doesn't have any debt which allows him to start saving and investing right away. I'm also assuming a 50 hour work week, which allows the electrician to make $2,400 per month, $2,000 after taxes. This means they are saving and investing $1,000 per month,
At the age of 22 the electrician is now making $60,000 per year, $4,000 per month after taxes. They are now investing $2,000 per month.
At the age of 28 the electrician makes $100,000 per year. This is $70,000 after taxes, and allows them to save and invest $3,000 per month.
At 22, the electrician is worth about $60,000 - investing $12,000 per year for their first 4 years.
At 28, the electrician should be worth around $290,000 - this is the base $60,000 + $2000 per month, 8% interest, over an additional 6 more years of their career.
At 50, the electrician is now worth almost $3,800,000.
This is awesome, the 18-year old plumber became a 50-year-old with $3,800,000 net worth.
Now for the doctor. The biggest difference is that the doctor can't start investing until later in life because of student loans.
The doctor goes to 4 years of undergrad school at $20k per year, and then 4 years of medical school at $50k per year. After these 8 years of school the doctor is $280k in debt.
After 8 years of school, the doctor will then enter 4 years of residency which pays around $60,000 per year salary.
Half of this goes to pay down student loan debt. The doctor is now 30 years young. From 4 years of a $60,000 salary, $50,000 after taxes, the doctor has paid off $100,000 of the student loan, bringing the total debt down to -$180,000.
After residency, the doctor begins to make a lot more money than most professions. The electrician is making $100,000 before taxes, but the doctor starts out making $320,000. After taxes, this is about $250,000. By the age of 32 the doctor has a net worth of $75,000. At age 40, the doctor will have a net worth of $1,575,000.
The doctor now gets a pay increase to $450,000 per year at the age of 40, which is $350,000 after taxes. They still invest half of that. By the age of 50 years old, the doctor is worth over $6.1 million dollars, or $2.3 million dollars more than the electrician.
The point of this illustration is to show that saving an investing early in your career is very important. It's more important than where you are from, what school you went to, or even what profession you choose.

@Supercooldude Removing the dislikes was damaging for viewers but KZfaq maintains the right to censorship on their own platform and extends that to content creators. I think content creators have the ability to remove comments on their videos under a guise of limiting spam, scams, and hate, but I don't think there is anything stopping them from removing dissenting opinions or really anything that could compromise any value maintained by a channel. It goes something like this: negative feedback? There's nothing here but glowing excerpts from people who found this video to be a wealth of information! When people have control over what you see, you'll only see what they want you to see, or rather, what you're willing to look at! None of this has to do with this specific video, but I had to rant!

I think another important lesson is how much our society/culture sleeps on the trades. Getting into a skilled trade (please note: SKILLED) like being an electrician is no joke. It's extremely challenging mentally, rewards intelligence and ingenuity, and is very rewarding. Oh, and you don't have to go to school. Plus you get cool tools. Ha

No, you do need to go to school for it. You can do this through a technical college that offers an electrical program, where you can graduate with a license or by going through the Union where you can learn as you go. Trade schools also do this. I‘m in the process of going through this myself and there is plenty of studying, exams and hands on activities. It requires mathematics, critical skills and can be extremely dangerous to you, patients (if you work in a medical environment) and clients. The job, like any other, can be worth it if you apply yourself and work for it. Hope this clears some things up. Cheers.

When I first started as a apprentice I was getting paid 10 a hr. This was hard to get used to especially since I was used to getting paid 19 a hour in the oil field pump shop. I calculated what I had to sacrifice financially and made the move. It was hard but doable , i had to be dedicated. 2 and a half years later I was getting paid 16 with my work ethic doing the talking for me as a commercial electrician 40 hrs a week, no ot. I quit the iec program and went to a company that did electrician jobs as a industrial electrician for oil field clients. Starting off pay was 22 a hr. But I had to drop the iec program. Not too bad considering I didn't really learn too much at the iec. We work around 15 hrs a day with with 4 hrs being drive time. We still get paid ot after 8 hrs a day. The work was way harder as a commercial electrician as opposed to industrial. I think I made a good move especially since industrial pays way better than commercial. I'm also learning automation. My goal is to get 2 years experience as a industrial and get my journeyman for total hours and eventually working for a local plant as some type to get 41 a hour as a i&e tech and then eventually get big money as a supervisor. Trades are definitely the way to go!

Great comparison. 🤔 One thing I'd like to emphasize is that it's easier to start your own electrical contracting biz than a doctors practice, less liability too. Also, it pays to specialize with a trade, you make way more this way(like 200k/year on salary for some specializations). I'm an electrician(with my own biz). Fairly sure I make more annually than an average doctor in my country. But yeah, you're right that it's dependent on the individual.⚖ There's also a status that comes along with being a doctor and social circles it opens up too. Being an electrician can have a stigma attached, depending on who you talk to.

I'm a JW electrician in Las Vegas. I live in the same neighborhood as some wealthy doctors. Yes, they probably make more money than me per year, but they're also more in tuition debt. The only debt I have is my mortgage, and a couple small credit cards, which I could pay off any time, but I use to keep up my credit score. I can provide for a family of 4 with my wife as a stay @ home mom, and we live a better than avg life. This did not happen over night though. I became an electrician 14 years ago. Still living w/ my parents, I worked my a** off and saved up to get where I'm @. It's all about setting goals, not being tempted to spend on unnecessary worldly possessions, and like Sam says. You can go electrical and then cross train HVAC when you have the first one down. HVAC has a lot of electrical aspects to it and I‘d argue it is easier to learn electrical first and then learn HVAC down the road, either through the Union or your company.

Great vid. Some more info for you. Residential, commercial, and industrial electricians make varying amounts from least to greatest, respectively, and union electricians make more than non-union. For reference, currently, a union commercial electrician in San Francisco makes $80 per hour in wages alone; he also makes about $40 per hour in benefits. Many electricians working on projects away from home also get a very generous tax-free per diem in addition to their hourly. And if an electrician decides to invest his money in properties, he can build a house and do the electrical himself, drastically reducing the cost, which greatly increases the profit when he sells it.

On the days she works, she works 9am to 12pm at the hospital, then she’s on call for the rest of the day. If you got the brain to do medical school then go to schools guys. You don’t have to bury your self in debt either. There so many options of school abroad for real cheap if you really want it. For anyone trying to find guidance in this video, take it with a grain of salt. These numbers are so stretched, it’s not that realistic. 70k a year after taxes, while saving 36k a year for investment leaves you with 34k. Try having a wife, some kids, a mortgage, pets, cars etc on 34k a year. A 2k/month mortgage alone eats that 34k up. I’m myself becoming an electrician rn bc I believe it’s a better route than college but this video is a poor representation. The real truth to making a skilled trade better than being a doctor is the 401k/pension for retirement, being able to work on your own house/projects instead of paying someone else, and not starting off with debt.

Electrician don't make 50 Grand a year they make more like 150,000 and if they work for their self it's more like 250,000 or 300 year if they're a one-man show with one van. And a doctor usually makes between 220 and 250 a year so you have that part right but your fifty Grand a year on electricians this way off. My dad was bringing home 11 to $1200 a week AFTER TAX in 1991 as an industrial master electrician and that was almost 32 years ago. My uncle brings home 3800 every two weeks after tax and insurance. And I know someone right now who is an industrial master electrician and does a lot of work for the Honda plant and the Mercedes plant and the Kia plant Etc. And he works for a contractor and he makes over $150,000 a year and he's not even a boss. You might want to re-evaluate your numbers a little bit

@@businesswithsam how? I throw out hundreds of super likes on online dating and I only match with about 1 percent of the women, and over half of them are obese. If my profile said I was a doctor, I'd get far more matches.

@@christianp5486 dude im saying this in the least disrespectful way as possible, but you are a low value man. These woman aren’t skipping you because of your profession, it’s because you offer such a sad excuse of a man. Men are leaders, strong, compelled, and masculine. Super liking girls on tinder has them laughing at you as they get a dopamine high bc another guy thinks they’re hot. Fix your mindset and stop going after whores on social media. I was in the same boat as you a year ago but it’s not the women, it’s you.

You just eliminated half of the country (as places to live) with your "only spend half of your money on bills when you make 24k/year". LMAO obviously this will work fine if you're willing to live in dire poverty for a few years is what you mean to say. hahahaha the poverty line (depending on where you live) is 12k-16k a year and you want the person who makes 24k a year to just save half their money. LMAO

If you invest $36k a year it would leave you with $34k a year to live on. A ton of people live on less than $34k per year. That’s a $17 an hour wage
