About Dian Fossey: Secrets in the Mist
Dian Fossey: Secrets in the Mist is a three hour series for National Geographic Channel. The series tells the story of the life, work, murder and legacy of gorilla researcher Dian Fossey. The series will weave together three story strands. The first is the story of Dian's life and work - her childhood, her early days researching in Congo and her arrival in Rwanda for the 18 years she studied Mountain Gorillas. The second strand covers Dian's murder in Rwanda and the trial of her American co-worker Wayne McGuire, who was found guilty of her murder. Wayne fled Rwanda before the trial began but was convicted in absentia. He has always maintained his innocence. We intend to reopen the case by reviewing the evidence (if it can be located) and speaking with people who knew and worked with Dian and were involved in investigating the murder. Finally, we will tell the story of Dian's legacy by filming the Pablo troop of gorillas, which includes the silverback Cantsbee, the most successful gorilla ever known. The series will use archive footage and still images, interviews with people who knew and worked with Dian, specially shot footage and reconstruction to tell the life story of Dian Fossey and the aftermath of her murder.

Believe it or not, I knew of her since I was 4 years old (I’m 32 now). I’m autistic & have always done my own thing, even in childhood. So, I learned how the VCR worked & picked out films of my own choosing, thankfully not being stopped by relatives. That’s when I watched “Gorillas In The Mist” for the 1st time. I watched it from start to finish, only pausing to grab a drink/snack or use the loo. I’ve always been unable to control the emotions I feel & I must admit, many parts did have me on the edge of tears. If I’d openly cried just part of the way through, the video would’ve been stopped, so I bottled it up (feeling it build up inside me like a volcano). But when it showed the bloody hand & then the “funeral” scene, I couldn’t hold back any longer & cried a river. My mum was going to take the video away, but that set me off even more, as I wanted to watch it again (& again, many times over), so she just let me. I was able to control it better the more times I watched it, but it was rough going all the same. I empathised with her for years, because she was alienated by many people for the way she defended her beloved gorillas (& I’ve more or less been alienated by people due to being autistic/disabled or simply because of my moods that I can’t control). I’m an animal lover myself, though I haven’t really been responsible for any pets except my baby rabbit; who sadly perished from GI stasis at 10 months & 24 days old (just after Christmas 2018). I was as close to him as Dian Fossey was close to poor “Digit”, though at least I have stories of Rainbow Bridge & his toys (etcetera) to comfort me, whereas Dian only had memories, the other gorillas & some comfort from her faithful tracker Sembagare. I have to admit, I would probably be as disturbed as she became if someone had tried to hurt my baby rabbit like that. Maybe I’m like Dian in the sense that we felt more comfortable amongst our animal friends. I’ve never stopped wondering who could’ve been responsible for her demise, but I often assume it was one of the poachers she may have pushed over the edge; because even though the end said her death remains a mystery, the shadow of someone with a raised machete implied that it was an intruding poacher who was sick of her “interfering” with their way of life. I can’t help but wonder how desperate that person must’ve been to feed their family, if it forces them to take the life of another human being. It didn’t really help them in the long run, though, did it? It seems she became a martyr for her gorillas & the foundation that sent her there to begin with were so inspired that they vowed to do whatever it took to protect the gorillas, thus letting her legacy go on. I suppose you could say that’s karma, but I’m no expert. Anyway, I think I’ve said enough about it for now. If you’ve read this far down, thank you so much. I only hope that Dian is with Digit (& her other beloved gorillas who died) in a peaceful place now. Regardless of her tactics against poachers, what she did for those gorillas was beautiful & I’d like to think she is in a much better place now, watching over the new generation of gorillas... 💕✨🌈❤️🦍✨💕

You wrote that beautifully. Autism brings out so much good and kindness in people. I’m sorry for your bunny. You will always have wonderful memories to cherish. I have 4 dogs and a cat; which I adore and love dearly. You should continue to write and tell stories. You are blessed to enlighten other people. God bless you.

Not a lot of people know this, but, by the time of her death, Dian Fossey was a crazy racist alcoholic who treated the locals like garbage, regarding her gorillas as superior to them, and consequently, her tragic death wasn't that of a surprise to those who knew her.
