There are a lot of 4150 style rebuild kits on the market today. Some great, some good, some downright horrible. We'll look at the three most popular and easiest to get a hold of and see how they compare.

I prefer the holley kits great luck with the blue gaskets when changing jets pop right off and reusable many times

Well with looking at this review that you did and all the knowledge that you've gained over time, me personally if I chose to rebuild my carburetor I would look at maybe using pieces from each kit what's your opinion.

You know that’s an interesting thought, and one I would expect from you! Seeing the whole Vino project has been your keen eye for making odd things work on a hot rod build! I guess my collection has grown over the years to a point where I always seem to look for little things to upgrade a rebuild, even when someone supplies their own kit. Would be quite an expense for the casual rebuilder. I for sure like the way you’re thinking!

The last 15 AED kits I got had a 4.5 PV in them , also I’ve found that the red gaskets are nice for not sticking but tend to shrink when the set for a few months and I’ve seen a couple start to come apart inside the float bowl.

I’ve not run into that, but most of the time it’s run a carb for a season, it comes off at some point over the winter for a refresh and back on in the early part of the year. I’ll have to see if I can find one that’s sat for long periods of time and how the gaskets react. Thanks for the tip.

I have had issues in the past with the edelbrock metering block gaskets not clearing the plastic bowl vent baffle and I had to trim them with a razor blade to fit properly, overall I have had the best luck with the Holley kits, the AED kits are good but I find with their red bowl gaskets that you really have to crank down the float bowl bolts really tight to get them to seal. Personally I rank Holley the best,then AED, then last the edelbrock, I was not very impressed but I will admit it is nice they are readily available locally usually same day or next day but if I can wait I choose the Holley kits.

Can’t argue a bit with your assessment. I haven’t had any issue with the red gaskets, but I can certainly think of situations where that might be the case. Those blue “non stick” gaskets though….bleh! 😆

Use Pam cooking spray on your metering lock an bowl gaskets an it makes them not stick if you have to change something internal.

1st off thank you. I have learned a lot. I still don't understand edelbrock but I grew up will Holly's and been a fan since. I'm about to rebuild a 4150. What do u think the best rebuild is? That has everything. No matter the cost.

I'm surprised it was that close between kits. I've seen videos on Chinese carbs, and I was wondering if they use standard replacement parts?

They do and the kits are generally bad. I looked for a couple of them to add to this video but decided against it. These are the top tier kits (only my opinion). I’ll likely do a cheap Chinese kit review later, but hesitant. I’m always amazed at the number of people who are very vocal in their support of Chinese knock off junk.

The 2818-1 isn’t a 4150. Shows it’s a vacuum secondaries factory carb.

I would go with the AED kit also because of the better metering block gaskets. The Holley blue gaskets are terrible. I have had them split and dry up before. Good comparison !

I’ve always enjoyed the AED kits so I’m a bit biased. Their pro kit comes with a ton of hardware which is always very helpful, but it’s a very expensive kit. These were all close in price and each has their own positives and negatives.

Axleratio.. try using a thin film of wheel bearing grease on the metering and bowl gaskets.

@@outlawbillionairez9780 that’s kind of the point. The gasket materials have improved. Shouldn’t need to add vasoline or grease to make them come apart. And I’ve seen that cause issues before when someone gets a little too aggressive with it. I know the red gaskets cost more, but boy are they a far cry better than the garbage blue gaskets! Which in turn are way better than those old paper gaskets that were just the devil.

@OUTLAW ALL BILLIONAIRZ no carb gaskets should have any grease applied to them just o rings. Been rebuilding carbs for 45 years.

@@MuscleCarSolutions I absolutely agree! Spent my youth inside Rochester and Autolite carbs. The kits must have had 5,000 gaskets and seals back then. Took more time to find the correct application than the build itself. And every cast surface was bowed and twisted. Carbs burnt a lot of cars to the ground in those dark days. This was a great comparison. I look forward to seeing more. 👍

Blue Holley gaskets are great compared to the old brown and black ones. The black Edelbrock gaskets would scare me.

Walker makes a decent kit that also has the blue bowl gaskets and they are priced better

I use Holley kits b/c I like the blue gaskets and they never stick in my 4555 780 Holley. I never use plastic washers b/c I don’t trust them to be leak proof. I wonder if the same supplier makes them for all the 3 Companies. IMO I would not buy the Edelbrock, the gaskets just look cheap and would probably stick like the ol days cork gaskets which were a beatch to clean.

The Edelbrock gaskets are literally the same as the Holley. Just a different color.

Have made the 4150 kit for ten years or so. Carried by O’Reillys for almost as long. But oddly enough it doesn’t work for their new VRS. Bowl and metering blocks are different. So they’ll have a new rebuild kit for those soon too!

Thank you for this. I still prefer the Holley stuff. The Holley accelerator pump (blue "Viton") diaphrams are the only ones pictured that are compatible with ethanol based fuels. NONE of the metering plate/fuel bowl gaskets are user friendly over time. Holley power valves pictured are window high-flows. So are their 110s needle/seat assys. Bowl screw gaskets of neoprene leak over time esp. with ethanol All companies should return to the fiber gaskets here. Not mentioned and not a part of the kits are clear plastic fuel bowl sight plugs and o-ring seals esp. the early ones, deteriorate and leak over time. An interesting sidenote... Holley stopped installing the the two most central "Phillips" throttle plate screws to carb. body in the late '70's- early '80's. This was not to save money on screws. There were some complaints of them having come loose and falling into intake manifolds. Just make sure they're all tightened!

Standard power valves in this kit. If they were the high flow ones, it would be a pretty remarkable part of that kit. They do get credit for adding the extra 6.5 and the 10.5. But even that’s a touch call on when to open the PV in that enrichment circuit. Just as many times I go to a 4.5 than opt for one that opens sooner like the 10.5. Ethanol is such an ugly additive. I think the center hardware you’re referring to was more in the late 90s. At least by the date codes that seems to play out, but for sure they get removed whenever I find them. Never had one come loose but it does make one think what if!

@@MuscleCarSolutions I have an original out of the box 4781 Holley that I purchased new in 1984. I had it on my Boss 429 for a while. It came without the two center t.p. screws. Thank you for the content.

@@billfioretti3013 man five years ago I would have said, next time I bump into some of the holley engineers I’ll see what they remember. But heck most of them are gone. Sad state of affairs in bowling green. I’ll default to your knowledge of it. The world may never know the exact time!
