I got the Hikoki 36V 1/2" a couple of months ago. It is brilliant. Power wise it just feels closer to a corded plunge router than to all my other 18V palm routers ( I know that it is really not, but it has that overall solid feeling when using it). And the runtime with my 2.5Ah 36V batteries is quite good actually. The BIG advantage of the palm ones is that you can just use them with one hand easily, holding the material with the other. With the Hikoki Plunge one you always have to make some sort of a setup before you do your cut.

Looks like the Dewalt fence was flexing quite a bit, where as the Hikoki was solid with the stronger bars, might be why the Dewalt was snatching. Great video anyway.

Would love the Hikoki. I run their nailers and have the batteries but boy is it dear. I have the Dewalt and the plunge base. Use it for most things. But Dewalt dropped the ball with the design. The depth adjustment is weird. Nothing fits nice and smooth. Everything fights you. The biggest hate is the guide fence. If you just want to do a quick straight cut forget it. The guide fence is screwed on and off rather than attached on the side like most others. It is so annoying I don't bother. Quicker to drop into plunge base that I have set up with a fence. This shouldn't be necessary though just poor design.

With routers for me it's very much a case of horses for courses. For deep cutting work (e.g. mitering worktop or rebating ply) plenty of raw power is essential, so I'd e looking for a powerful motor, however for trim and finishing work it's all about fine control. In both case though for me ergonomics are the key for productivity e.g. ease of bit change, stops and guides and (for trim work) fine adjustment, even the feel of the tool in the hands. So raw power is sometimes (but not always) important but it's by no means the most important factor I'd be looking for in a router.

I'm curious to know if the makita 18v on the round bit test perform sligtly less than makita 40v or there is huge difference and perform like Dewalt... 40v Makita look same 18v with improved battery, maybe new cells with less resistance that can deliver more and fast current. I noticed Hukoki has 18v/36v (if you use 18v is 4ah and on 36v become 2,5ah) battery that can used equally on different voltage tools. I noticed in my other cheap brand tools (parkside) that 4ah battery deliver more power than 2Ah and now there are new battery that give more power release for the same tools and they are smaller.

Great video! I have the Dewalt Trim Router. Absolute pocket rocket! Not really a fair comparison. Noting the Dewalt powerstack using new battery technology - which has nice constant linear power. Compared to Hikoki and Makita both using 18650 batteries. Test should of been done with some dust extraction attachment - to reduce clog up and jam up. I feel Hikoki poor considering it’s size should have more power and win by higher margin - great video!

Consider on cost alone A corded tool costs £500 and does the job all day long (no electricity, go buy a gennie) Cordless, more than £500 for the tool, than you need atleast £250/batterie that gives you 10 mins of work time under this load, typically to keep working, how many batteries would you need...?......... .at least 3.... Work out that cost, plus the weight to carry and you would need 2 chargers, because it takes a charger 1 hour to re charge an 8 amp batterie that goes flat in 10 mins?....... You would be insane to buy a cordless router/chop saw/grinder/circular saw/masonary drilling, especially using core bits..... Cordless is only good for hand drills to put in screws.... thats all they are good for, light work only.....
