When most people think of luxury eyewear, they think of fashion brands who are big in clothing. But the two don't always correlate, so in this video we're exposing the manufacturers behind the brands, who license those names for big money.
From Luxottica to Safilo, Kering to Marchon, we look at the world's biggest eyewear manufacturers and provide some advice on which are the best quality + the ones to buy and not to buy.
Not local to us? No problem! Check this link:

I don’t think it is. If he said Luxottica brand are not so good quality, then why celebrities wear them? I don’t think all of their brand use plastic, only some cheaper brand like ray ban etc.

Interesting video Rob.... Having worked for Kering, Marcolin, Marchon, Derigo and Safilo (twice) I can honestly concur with the majority of your opinions... I've now moved back to MODO and ECO eyewear where I will stay until I'm too old to carry around large sample bags! Keep the videos coming mate they are very good and full of accurate information about the world of optics and in particular eyewear brands...

When I ordered my Cartier 0207 in August 2022, I was warned by the Optician that they would probably come from Italy where Kering is/was concentrating their spectacles production. But no, they are clearly stamped Made in France, which made me happy no end🤓

I’m very curious on your thoughts on Akoni eyewear. I have found the quality of their Balmain eyewear to be actually quite decent and the designs to be very unique, and it makes it better that they use pretty decent quality Japanese acetate and titanium and precious metals such as palladium, platinum, white gold, and yellow gold. I have no idea who their lens manufacturers are though, so I couldn’t speak too much on the lens technologies. I also think it’s a decent addition that they have decided to go green by using renewable resources not only from their acetate, but all the way down to their packaging. However that last part has nothing to do with the quality of their eyewear, but I would love to hear your thoughts. And if you genuinely think it is good or not don’t be afraid to speak your mind.

How interesting. One question for you. Regarding acetate, does quality also mean lighter or it is it more how they look and feel?
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory Жыл бұрын
Good question. The quality can actually refer to a few things - the age or make-up of the original acetate, the time put into the finishing and polishing and the embellishments. Better quality acetate tends to be heavier, actually, but better finished acetate tends to feel lighter and softer on the face. For lightweight acetate frames, it's super important that the material is pre-hardened and finished with metal-to-metal joints on the hinges otherwise it is likely to chip or crack. An example would be the Airlite frames from Anglo American Optical - compare them to the thin acetates from Oliver People's and I think they are superior for a slightly lower price.

15:47 The only Tom Ford eyeglasses whose T on the temples line up are.... Made in Japan and made from titanium. I have 2 pairs of Tom Ford made on Japan and made from titanium frames whose T's line up. They are also extremely comfortable. On the other I bought a pair of Tom Ford black acetate glasses made in Italy.... And they are extremely uncomfortable to wear. One temple puts a lot of pressure on my ear that ends up giving me a headache. I have tried stretching them, I had tried to have them professionally stretched.... And the THICK acetate does not bend, or if it does is goes back to its original shape. I have worn them a handful of times due to how much they irritate, and hurt my ear. And yes, the T does not line up.

Well, the current situation is a bit more complex. Not everything is bells and whistles when it comes to Safilo. The business scheme is almost the same as in Luxottica's case. Take for example Carrera. After Safilo purchased Carrera in 1996, the same year ALL production was moved to Henan, China. On the other hand, Persol was bought by Luxottica in 1995, but to this day, Persol sunglasses are handmade in its historic factory in Lauriano, Italy.

Hi Robert, my prescription is -7.75/ -7.00 every time when I have my glasses made, my eyes tend to shrink a lot with glasses. I am using the Zeiss lens and tend to stick with the Duravision Platinum coating. Would you say a 1.74 lens would have less of the shrinking effect compared to the 1.67 for my prescription? I always buy new frame a year, but I always like slightly bigger frames now these days. My prescription is -6.5 , but I sense that bigger frame vision quality isn't that great. Is it that 1.74 plastic lenses has more distortion and maybe I should look at glass frame rather than plastic?
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory Жыл бұрын
It's not the material, it's the lens design. What lens type are you wearing? Pretty sure with SmartLife or ClearView for example you would get great vision in a large frame

I don't wear sunglasses but I saw a sunglasses from a KZfaqr Matti Haapoja and it got me interested, it is BurBerry BE4291 matte black, I want to get it for the style and not the brand, is it worth it, any same carbon copy design but different brand and cheaper? Or similar frameless flat top minimalist design? And I also thought to get Terminator 1 Gargoyle ANSI Classic still selling, is it still possible to get new unused unit because they seem ended business last year, just so recently when I suddenly interested in sunglasses, hmmm. Also the flat top sunglasses from Hancock movie, that brand seem doesn't business anymore too, why? I like flat top sunglasses, so modern, urban and futuristic!

I bought my son the spy optical glasses, two pairs over 600 worth and the design of the hinge is horrible , my son had an accident where he fell asleep and the side came off which is normally a simple repair, just add a screw but they have some type of ball barring which if the sides come off the glasses becomes worthless even tried talking them to get repaired and was told I'm out of luck

To defend your brand, you don’t have to speak ill of the competition. Doing so makes you a sore loser or, in some cases, a poor winner even if you have better sales. Luxottica has a prestige that has been proven over the years and an enviable history; this makes it deserving of respect. By the way, did you know that the "plastic" Luxottica is using is bio-acetate made from natural and renewable resources to reduce CO2 emissions?
