As a native British English speaker, I can confirm that your use of the adjective "prophylactic" is wholly correct both in chess and in any other sense. Until you remarked on it in this video, I had never thought that there might be any confusion. Your critics should club together and buy themselves a good dictionary.

Well, prophylaxis with a ph, not an f, if you're transliterating the Greek. Classically, the phi (φ) was pronounced as an aspirated p like in the word "pie" (pi (π) was pronounced as an unaspirated p like in the word "spy"). Today, we pronounce it like an f, but we still use the spelling ph, hence "prophylaxis."

He is actually in a weak position if he moves rook to E4 at 10:10. There is a much better move than a defensive move. There is a checkmate chance. White Rook E1 to E4 -> Black rook on d7 takes Knight on d4. If you take the queen then black rook now on d4 takes rook on d1 and checkmate. Pavel has a chance to win here. Commenting late because I saw this video just now.

People who argue about the word "prophylactic" do not need a dictionary so much as starting reading chess books instead of relying exclusively on youtube to learn stuff. After all it was introduced in chess literature (by Nimzowitsch, I guess) almost 100 years ago and used widely since then - although no too much in the context of M. Tal's games, admittedly ;o)

Prophylaxis is a term in chess, as well as being a general idea. It was introduced by the grandmaster Aaron Nimzovich in his book My system in the 1920s. The term refers to actions taken by a player to anticipate and thwart the opponent's plans, and moves of these type are often called prophylactic moves.

I think the word you're looking for is "preemptive". while prophylactic *could* be used because it's Greek root words are "before" and "guard", it began its meaning as a medical term meaning to "prevent disease". whereas "preemptive" is used as a military term meaning "to prevent an action" such as "moving the king into a position to preempt an attack by the black rook."

En Passant move : It is a special pawn capture that can only occur immediately after a pawn makes a move of two squares from its starting square, and it could have been captured by an enemy pawn had it advanced only one square.

We use the word prophylactic in medicine too for instance since infection is one of the challenges in surgery recovery, healthcare professionals provide antibiotic treatment BEFORE surgery and infection occur. The king's move to B2 is definitely prophylactic since it's getting ready for something bad BEFORE it actually happens.

That's the original meaning. Later: In the game of chess, prophylaxis (Greek προφυλαξις, "prophylaxis," guarding or preventing beforehand) or a prophylactic move is a move that stops the opponent from taking action in a certain area for fear of some type of reprisal.

Funny that your use of the word prophylactic needed to be defended. People get so squeemish about a word just because it has a meaning in the context of sex. For a hundred years prophylaxis has been the accepted chess terms for seeking to understand and interfere with your opponent's plan and prophylactic the term to describe such a move. In a hundred books on chess, I've never seen a different term used to describe the same idea. Maybe try using it a hundred times in one video?

In second grade, a classmate used to call the bishops "boobies" and hold them up to her chest like giant nipples. If that happened today, any boy who looked would be suspended for sexual harassment.

Prophylactic can be used as a synonym for contraceptive. I think that's why it was bugging some people. Similar to how I once made the Russian language blunder of talking about all the 'preservatives' they put in American fast food. Needless to say everyone was more than a bit hesitant to eat at McDonald's after that.

prophylactic: a preventative measure, usually relating to disease. I've heard it used as a preventative measure in a variety of other situations. So yeah, not sure why people would complain about your usage.

Those who told you not to use prophylaxis in chess has not studied chess. Nimzhovich introduced this theory of prophylaxis in his book "My System". Plus the use of prophylaxis in medical term implies the same meaning in chess. So whether you have read Nimzhovich or not as long as you understand chess you would not say you cannot use the word.

Alternative Solution @10:06. There are two reasons rook to e4 is unplayable. The first is the knight but the second is the d7 rook, which would at least force a knight loss.
