Not paying a 5% interest fees for paying cash is hardly a discount. It's just not paying fees. Small businesses are pretty up front about this.

the business i work at (small business) does this, its not a discount persay but more of all prices are marked as if paid via cash or cheque, and then if you pay with a card there’s a 3.5% fee added to the value, $45 a month vs paying an entire employee’s salary every year,

It used to be if you paid with cash, it was store price, but if you pay with card, you'd be charged to use it at the store you were at. People hated this and not many people changed to the cards, It wasn't until someone somehow got the universal prices to go up, getting rid of the extra charge to simply use a card. You literally cut out a big portion of credit card history by forgetting that. I still find little ma and pa stores today still charging customers based on whether they use a card or not, so it isn't like it has been a universal price for all that long. Within the last decade.

He was right up until the end. Paying cash gets doesn’t get you a discount. It just means that you aren’t subject to paying the interchange fee, if you’re at a store that “discounts” for that. He is correct that a lot of stores raise their prices but it’s not just because of this one issue. People paying cash are not helping banks! The extra that would’ve gone to interchange fees is going to the business as profit, not points on a card.

Yeah its a tax on the poor. The whole credit card system should be abolished but it won't be theres too much money in it. Thats why smart people shop sales and discounts. You know who pays for those sales and discounts? The people who pay full retail for it RIGHT NOW. It literally pays to wait and stock up on what you like. Cereal is now $5+ a box so when i go to the store and buy 4 for $8 for box and add a $1 off coupon to the sale price im getting 4 boxes for $7 why the people who might buy a box every week whenever they run out are paying 3-4 times the price because they just didn't shop properly. Get any major chains near you to send their sale flyers or check them online. Sometimes you can save $100 for $5-$10 in gas if you plan your trips and shopping lists in advance. Sometimes you will find a great deal in a store thats not listed as well. Last week i found 12 packs of a premium drink that sell for $12 marked down to $1.99 so for $6 i got 36 16oz drinks that sell for $1+ each thats saving 5/6 of the total price.
@SurprisinglyDeep

Makes good sense. I agree The only thing is are you buying some stuff you would otherwise never buy just because it is on sale? Like for example when some people hear "there's a sale of get 2 for 1 on tubs of orange flavoured ice cream" and understandably think "gee I better stock up on this orange flavoured ice cream then" not realising "wait I never eat orange flavoured ice cream, the only reason I'm even considering buying it is because of the sale they have on right now".

You're right, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to fine you for not using line breaks. Fines like this are regressive meaning the rich can create a wall of text and pay the fine while sycophants eat it up. Meanwhile the poor have to choose between paying rent or getting a retweet after that financial damage.

What we really need to do is put a cap on interchange fees like the EU did. As it stands, there’s basically a hidden tax on everything (i.e. high interchange fees), then you can get some part of it back via rewards. And if you do manage to get more than you give, it’s just b/c non-high-rewards payers are subsidizing you-you’re essentially defecting in the prisoners dilemma. Highly recommend US Gov’t Accountability Office’s paper 10-45 for a more detailed look.

Plus the debt/balance on cards that people default on. The banks sell that debt to debt collectors for a nominal amount so they can at least try to collect something, and sometimes those places are able to garnish your wages. But interest has a lot to do with it as well, because these companies expect a certain amount of defaults. But the consumers who actually pay their CC bill with a high interest rate, plus a high balance (interest accrued usually has to do with a percentage of the balance) every month, especially those who just pay the minimum, their money is mostly going to interest and not the principal - free money for the company who issued the card. Most people are going to pay their bills, and the ones who don't get cut off. But the interest payment of higher limit customers help pay for the people who default. I used to work for a finance company. Sometimes our motto was "throw s**t at the wall and see if it sticks."
