I'd like to let you know that Charice has started to transition and now goes by male pronouns and the name Jake. Hope his transition is as smooth and easy as possible. @@islandeatssand684 Nope. Not true at all. She sang Effie on Broadway for 3 and a half years and has sung her signature song on and off since then. She WAS diagnosed with depression during Dreamgirls and multiple sclerosis later - but singing Effie didn't cause her health problems.

That’s why I think a lot of these singers missed the mark. Don’t get me wrong, they pretty much all did it better than I ever could, but a lot of them are singing it way too pretty. This song is all about finding the balance between raw and rough but still hitting those notes with clarity. Such a great song. And honestly, it’s almost always the black girls that sing it the way it was meant to be sung. The little Asian girls sound wonderful but they just don’t have the soul imo.

Didn't think her vocals were the strongest, but she was smart and realized the moment didn't need Whitney's 'channel the power of the earth' strength through here. It's more impactful that she does what she can (the character, not Lillias) and fails, but keeps going.

Jennifer Holliday is the BEST!! NO ONE can come close to her power, passion, innate singing ability, technique and stage presence! I had the privilege of watching her perform this song in Los Angeles in Dreamgirls. The sheer electric power of her performance had me in tears. Best memory ever!!!

Almost everyone sings this as an angry song. It is a song of desperation. It is the song of a woman who is breaking. Jennifer Holliday is the only one who lets go of the pretty, lets go of dignity and sings it with the true emotion of the song.

Amber Riley has an Olivier award for this portrayal. And Jennifer Holiday has the Tony for the original portrayal, as well as a Grammy for it re-release. And still Jennifer Hudson has an Oscar for her portrayal in the movie. Stunning performances all around. It takes a big voice to fill the shoes of Miss Effie White.

This song is not just a song to sing.. You have to embody it, embrace it, feel it... You have to sing it with tears on your face.. This is not a song for every singer with a beautifil voice, it's not a song to show off your abities, but to show off your capabilty to feel and your empathy

This song is hard as hell to sing even for seasoned, professional singers. They're all amazing to me. So happy you started with the OG Jennifer and ended it with JHUD. Big sad Whitney wasn't included (stupid copyright) cause she, as ALWAYS, blew it into outer space. But also I've literally watched the Nicole Scherzinger/Sam Bailey version wayyy too many times. I'm super obsessed with it. Imma just say Jennifer Holliday cause she's the one that put it down the first time and nobody imo will ever sing like that lady...She's a freakin goddess. lol

@@vanggukie3967 Naya had a particular voice, but wasn't a voice for every song. Lea's voice is more powerful, clean, extended and basically for every tipe of song. But all voices on glee were so much beautiful, i miss cast and show so much, but no one made me cry like Lea's voice or Darren's voice (sorry for My english, i'm italian 😂)

These renditions of this song are just incredible, but I have to give all of my praises to the woman who sung it in the film version (Jennifer Hudson), the woman who sung it on Glee (Amber Riley) and of course the woman who originally sung it on Broadway (Jennifer Holiday)

Everybody was freaking fantastic! I never had such a great time! What voices! They all are powerhouses!!! But we know the 1st Jennifer did that, then passed the torch to the last Jennifer. I had to watch it twice! They have more talent in one hair, then I do in my whole body. I wish! I wouldn't shut up!!! Amazing song. They forgot a couple of people though. That girl that got the golden buzzer. This song is brilliant. I love love love music. The 1st Jennifer took me to church! Eviro, girl whew!!!

Chuck Franklin Truth. Only two other singers even understand the piece. It’s not a song where one just hits the notes, it has to be emoted and with the fitting emotion which is not primarily anger or pride.

Jennifer Holiday originated the role and everyone else’s version is influenced by her performance. Plus she had to do it while acting night after night. She also didn’t have the luxury of being able to pause or take long breaks as some of these performances.

No concert performance can ever match the intense passion that Jennifer Holliday gave as Effie on broadway, it makes me cry every time...BUT... I do absolutely Love 15 year old Sarah Ikuma's audition of Britain's Got Talent 2017, she really nailed it and she is fkn AMAZING! Aside from that, I have to agree 100% with Keshia Morris' comment below and it bears repeating, it was my thought exactly, "Jennifer Holiday- won a damn Tony... yass Jennifer Hudson- won a damn Oscar and Grammy 👏🏾 Amber Riley- won a damn Olivier (first AA woman since 92’ to do it) 👏🏾👏🏾 That’s it nobody else"

Jennofer holiday... There is no comparison, she will be the bar that no one can surpass. Because she put it all out there. Her whole soul. She did 8-10 shows a week on stage in front of thousands night in and night out. The BEST someone can hope for is to match her.

There is a difference in hitting notes and singing notes. I’ve watched this video at least 100 times and can definitively say there aren’t many who are actually singing it. The Jennifer’s are pretty much it! Oh and Amber!

@Julian Rodriguez I totally disagree. There isn’t just one way to sing something. They ALL have their own spin on it, and are bringing different emotions to the song. And what the heck does that even mean anyways? A difference between hitting notes and singing notes… FFS.

@Noel Uchendu I see your point, and I agree. But I just want to mention, what if the strain and tension is what the singer was going for? What if they intentionally chose to sing like that as a style to try and communicate the stress and pressure the character is under, or how tired the character is? For example, I actually think Jennifer Holliday sounds very strained in her version. But maybe that was the goal? To show that the character is desperately digging through the pain and is exhausted?

@Noel Uchendu I definitely agree with everything you’re saying. And that’s why personally I really enjoyed Jessica Sanchez’s performance. Some people said she sounded like she’s forcing the early notes, but that was the style she was going for IMO. Then she switches to clear ringing notes in the latter half and it’s just beautiful IMO.
