There is a difference in being in character singing a song and performing a vocal rendition of the same song. Each songstress did a beautiful job in their own context and circumstances. JHud's performance was orchestrated, Tasia's performance was while in character during the production, the remainder of the ladies were freestyling their own musical interpretations/ renditions. These should not be compared, only appreciated.

I love the version from the Kennedy Center Honors with Jennifer Hudson. When the choir comes in, I get goosebumps. But when Fantasia sang it, I cried. There is no theater in her performance. She, I hope, knows she doesn't have to add more bravado to the big parts because they are beautiful when they are beautifully sung from the heart. I am looking forward to the movie and soundtrack having a strong recording of Fantasia's performance.

Fantasia for me! Hands down. She embodied each lyric to it's fullest and made you feel the story. There is no questions that Cynthia Erivo delivered an amazing flawless "technical" rendition. Performing is more than just hitting every note and intonation, it's about emoting and bringing the lyric and story to life. Fantasia did just that! All are talented and my point is proven with LaChanze winning the Tony for her performance. They all bring something special.

When it comes to oh my God vocal power, Cynthia has ‘em all beat, IMO. However. Fantasia. Her “I’m beautiful” moment was the only one that had me nodding, cheering, clapping and crying all at the same time. Her Celie realized, claimed and owned that moment, declaring to all who tried to bury or control her that their power over her was over and done. So I have to give this to Fantasia.

All of them were phenomenal, filled with angst, power and soul. Fantasia's version is all of that, but also transcendent in a way that can only happen when the spirit of a song's lyrics were created for YOU to sing it because you've lived it. That song flows from the depths of her soul.

Fantasia makes you feel this song from deepest pits of your soul...I feel her pain& I believe it, it’s not acting. Cynthia is technical and clean, might be too clean that it lacks soul and the grittiness of the context of the song. Hudson always kills this on high notes, not sure how she does that...so it’s Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson & Cynthia in that order for me. Fantasia is simply sublime on this song, literally she kills it

Musical Theatre is hard. We have to look at vocals but also look at acting as well. Obviously Cynthia has the pipes and her voice is gold. This isn't Cynthia's final form. When she is singing it in the play it is something else! It's amazing. I think the reason why Cynthias and Fantasia have so much emotion is because they are singing it on stage in character in the middle of an intense scene.

Remember Fantasia had vocal cord tumors that would become inflamed when she hits that note during this time as well. She was in pain every night during her performances. So it's Fantasia for me but always! ❤️ 💙
