Who is the right person to buy a Jetta TDI Sportwagen? I hope it's not a person looking to have a low cost ownership experience. Repairs, maintenance, and pretty average fuel economy keep this car from being a miser's dream. It's more ideal for a diesel enthusiast looking for a fun to drive little wagon. Or should I say wagen?

I have a 2013 VW Jetta Sportswagen TDI. I bought it from a independent dealer in Knoxville, TN 3 yrs ago. A friend picked it out, I thought VW? Diesel! OMG! NO! well I got it anyway. Well it proved me wrong! This is the best car I have ever owned! The maintenance is very low, 10k miles between oil changes. Diesel is high but the milage makes up for it. With mine I have gotten 57 mpg City and 67 HWY! I can go from Sevierville, TN to Myrtle Beach, SC and still have 1/8th of a take left. (14 Gallon Tank). I haven't had no issues with it. It runs great and it's my favorite of my 3 cars, (the other two is a 2018 VW Tiguan and a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado 4X4.) I highly recommend the VW Jetta Sportswagen TDI to everyone!

Thanks for the video! I got mine a few years back for $12,500 with 30k miles. Manual & no panoramic sunroof. I change the oil myself and it does cost about $50 just for the oil. I was also getting 35ish mpgs, put a tune on the car (legal, didn’t remove any of the emissions stuff) and now I get just above 40. Great car! In terms of cost for the vehicle for what you get, it is an excellent buy.

I bought mine new 2011, and the only issue I had was with the way the transmission felt, but functionally, I was sold. Over time I continue to realize the vehicle is the real deal for function. My kids grew up in the car and we took and still take this on long trips as young college kids with very capable replacements in the driveway. 120k with new shocks, struts, brakes, and tires and it feels new again. I would only consider a new 2019 g wagen with an extended warranty.

I have a 2012 JSW TDI with DSG and no pano roof. I didn't want the pano which was one selling point when I found this car. As much as I love manual cars, they just don't make sense for the amount of traffic and driving I find myself dealing with for work. With the DSG, I can let the car shift or decide to manual shift it.....without needing both feet. Luckily, mine was never bought back or had the fix done to it by VW. All the emissions equipment is in the car, and if I drive it nicely I average 38 mpg hand calculated with combined city/highway driving. Straight highway trips I can average above 40 mpg driving nicely. Weekend drive with my fellow car enthusiasts cause my mileage to drop down to around 34 mpg. All cars require maintenance, but I will agree German cars in general cost more for that maintenance. My Honda Civic that I replaced was cheaper for oil changes, but so was the overall feel of the car. You just can't compare how a VW feels and drives compared to other economical cars out there.

For someone that is just looking for low cost of ownership and doesn't care about driving experience I would say get a prius or any other reliable gas car that gets over 30mpg. I think at least where I live and the mpg I get the break even point is around 35mpg for a gas car costing the same on fuel because of the price difference in fuel for my area. I've had 3 different Gen TDIs and the mk4 is probably the best for low maintenance/high reliability. I normally got 45 - 50mpg but they are dogs and still can have minor issues clogged egr limp mode due to turbo vanes getting stuck on etc. I currently have a mk6 golf tdi manual trans and get low 40s mpg average. Haven't had any major repairs but once my extended warranty runs out I'll be doing deletes and changing out fuel pump for peace of mind/greater reliability.

(Knock on wood)…I haven’t had any issues with my pano sunroof on my 2014…yet…And that’s after 2 years of ownership. I’ve read countless posts of potential owners seeking out less optioned cars with the sole purpose of avoiding the pano sunroof. Seems a bit overstated if you ask me…the drains can be cleaned out if you have any technical, mechanical competence, and if not, this service can be done by your mechanic. My local VW dealer charges $250, which isn’t too expensive considering what you might pay to repair the damage caused by a leaky sunroof.

my advice- get one used with the full dieselgate warranty(54000mi), manual, tape the sunroof shut with clear gorilla tape, always drive it above 1800rpm, change the oil yourself, and enjoy.

Stay up on the maintenance, and use oem parts. I also am a firm believer in a good quality fuel additive that increases lubricity in any modern direct injection diesel.

They are on the DSG also, and can fail. Look it up! Apparently they vibrate violently when they fail.

Just delete the stupid emission system and straight pipe + tune it. Doing 50mpg and substantially more power & torque. Can't get a better deal than this.

I agree that deleting the DPF will increase fuel economy, but I can't in good conscience advise people to break local and federal laws that are in place to keep our air clean.

I personally DESPISE cheap bastards that buy diesel cars because they think they are gonna be saving soooooo much money at the fuel pump. They are the exact opposite of who should own them. Those people should go buy a prius as they have the personality to go with it.

Despise us kind of strong. But I agree with you. You don’t buy a modern diesel to save money.

@@doublejslistTake out the heavy resonator and muffler and install a straight pipe cat back with nice tip like mine with Banks exhaust. Use quality diesel from reputable fill stations and adding lubricant cleaners like LiquiMoly or OptiLube. Everything else stock with emissions components intact. I bought 2014 TDI sportwagen with 48k and put about 2k on it this past month with no issues. Changed all filters and did oil change with LiquiMoly. Sounds like a tractor at low speed and turbo whistle at high RPM. Driving experience worth the additional required maintenance. If you want similar or better MPG without the torquey feel of TDI, trade in your balls and buy a freaking Prius already 😂
