You commented on the time it must have taken to pull this off, They actually managed nailing it on the 4th take. For another example of a one take (Ren has many) Money Game Pt1 took over 180 takes. Ren does not splice the best from each take either, when a mistake is made, they start from scratch til they get it in one go.

@@aNomadicSasquatchto add to your comment about how Ren's "one-takes," (not REALLY a 1-take if it takes more than 1 attempt, as in, 'take-2,' take-3,' etc. so it's more properly a single-shot or continuous shot)... But to give it even more incredible flavor IMO, he actually makes a little mistake 1/3 of the way through, when he says: "...I call the shots, I choose who dies....yeah, I choose who survives..." It was a minor little flub but it makes it all the more human...they could have stopped & reshot to get it "perfect," but this whole song is imperfectly perfect. He already makes conscious choices to mis-pick or hit a false or discordant note to amplify the craziness or intentional discomfiture. He changes the intensity of his guitar playing, he spits the words out more forcefully at certain points...accelerates or decelerates his phraseology at the perfect times. It isn't just talent. The man has an outstanding grasp of language that lends even more force to his lyrics & "flow." This is as much spoken word performance art as it is music.

Not so sure it was the drugs alone that caused the psychotic episodes. I think Ren has said he heard voices at a young age, probably well before any tick bite leading to undiagnosed Lyme, which becomes neurological and can precipitate psychotic episodes. The wrong psychiatric drugs can make things worse ( and delay an accurate diagnosis. as what happened to Ren. ..I know it happened to me.' HI Ren' is art in an ultra high form, turning very difficult painful life processes into beauty through his creative process and honing amazing vocal and guitar skills to deliver an exquisite live performance... BTW EArly diagnosis and doxycycline in the first couple days after the tick bite will kill the Lyme bacteria. (Get tested, or just take the doxy because the tests can be wrong) do not mess around with tick bites!!!!)

Hi Elliot. In a nutshell, if you are English you were born in England. If you are British you were born in the British Isles. As Ren was born in Wales, (part of Great Britain), he is both Welsh and British. Ren plays all kinds of music and does it all very well indeed. Recently he decided to make a rap album so a lot of his latest music is rap. His ability to tell a story and make it feel relateable in a song is quite remarkable. Indeed his story telling is so good a lot of people comment he is like a new Shakespearian bard. Hence the term "BardCore" due to the gritty realism of his work. Lyme Disease is easily cured with a few pills when caught early. Failure to treat Lyme Disease can eventually see it attacking the brain, which is what happened to Ren. All the pills he was prescribed were trying to treat things that were not there so he had no upsides to his treatment but ALL the downsides of the side effects, (phsycosis etc). There are several good interviews with Ren on KZfaq right now, all worth watching, but I would recommend the Justin Hawkins interview on the channel "Justin Hawkins Rides Again" for an insight into his life and illness. Ren comes across as the genuine, funny and intelligent person he is despite the pain and suffering he has endured through no fault of his own, which is a credit to the man he is imho.

My comparison is Texan and American. If your mother birthed you in the back of an ambulance as it was screaming down the highway in sight of the Welcome to Texas sign and you have lived in Texas ever since, I'm sorry, you are not a native Texan. No other state would care, but for native Texans you are a transplant.

All after such tragedy in his life, and all he wants to do is create and lift people up. He truly is a musical genius. I’m older and have seen a lot of musicians, but no one like Ren.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue; subsequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Ren's YT channel has less than 1 million subscribers while his videos have garnered millions and millions of views. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. Ren has exceeded his initial goal. However, his goal was very conservative and did not reflect the added costs of unforeseen surgical procedures, and treatment for additional health issues such as MCAD. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

Well said! But regarding goFundMe, Ren actually said in the last live stream on Twitch that we should stop sending money. He thanked everybody but said he now has enough for the planned treatment. BUT he asked for money to give to a good cause in his home town wich goal is also now fulfilled But knowing his philosophy and will to do good, I am sure there will come something more.

He is a real singer (not like you hear in Hi Ren) and he is also a rapper - a very good one, and of course, he beat boxes too! He is a skilled lyricist and composer. He has great content with his band The Big Push. He has also done some fantastic collaborations. He is currently releasing videos for his upcoming Sick Boi album and he’s already working on the next album. Not every video of his is a live one-take but he does a lot of them. The Ren (Ren the storyteller, Ren the Rapper, Ren the singer, Ren the social commentator), The Big Push, Ren and Chinchilla, Ren and Sam Tompkins, plus Ren and various others rabbit hole is deep and fun. He’s independent and it seems he intends to stay that way largely because he likes the follow his creative instincts and not studio formulas but also maybe because of his health issues.

Let the art speak to you before speaking to it kinda thing. Your genuine appreciation of this piece was great to see. I've been immersed in all things music since I was a child. I'm pushing 50 and Ren is the most significant musical artist I've encountered in at least the last 20 years. He has no contemporary analogs. I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn’t a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every “Hi Ren” reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. “Hi Ren” is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 15 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. In the case of "Hi Ren" it took four takes, all live in the room, to get the footage he wanted. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren" and is filmed in the same room. Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker/producer from Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, produces all his own beats, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZfaq are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, in particular his song “Fire,” just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren is about to shoot “Money Game Part III.” Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” "Hold On," “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” his recent release "The Illest Of Our Time," and his latest song “Animal Flow,” both the full production and the live acoustic version. Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned It /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “Latch,” “Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session),” “Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren),” “Improvising Around Stevie Wonder,” “Live in the Streets of Brighton, UK,” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. Last but not least, Ren’s busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," “War Pigs,” “Roadhouse Blues,” "My Generation," “Paint It Black,” "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong” are awesome. On “These boots are made for walking’/Satisfaction/Everybody,” “Praise You” (Fatboy Slim Cover), “What Kind Of Woman Is This,” all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren released his song, “Illest Of Our Time,” on his birthday, March 29. His recent release, "Animal Flow," is out now in two versions, a full-production music video, and a live, one-take acoustic version. Ren’s latest work, “Suicide,” just premiered and it was hard to watch. It is a sad, haunting, gut-wrenching tribute to Ren’s friend Joe who committed suicide. I have not been able to watch it again and have not watched a single reaction to it.

I was kind of astonished by that at first but then I figured out that a) this song is probably easier to do that way if you wanna keep the emotion as the tempo fluctuates b) he's a busker. Buskers do not get do-overs. This is what he does.

The fact that this is 1 take makes the talent even more obvious. I am blowed away by his ability to shift character, change his playing and voice and behavior and eye contact (not to mention remembering every word and how he wanted to deliver it) so perfectly and done live with no cuts or auto tune etc.

I love your reaction!! Your energy is contagious. Please go down the Ren rabbit hole. He’s changing the music game. He’s an independent artist who continues to make music and shoot videos with tight financial resources and he is not giving into the machine. He’s been contacted by many coming off of this video but he chooses to continue doing it as an independent artist and owning his vision while working with the incredibly talented Sam, his videographer. Ren will continue to deliver content the way he wants it and without the meddling and pressure from a major record label. He was signed by Sony when he was 17 but Lyme disease was debilitating and the label ultimately dropped him. His road to recovery continues to be difficult but blessings come in all forms and, maybe stepping away from Sony was one of many for him. Thanks again for the reaction!! ❤

So glad you did this reaction and want to check out more of Ren's music. Ren is the realist artist I've come across ever. Take a deep dive into his catalog and you'll see his genius and artistic brilliance. He is getting medical help in Canada for Lyme disease that went misdiagnosed for about a decade. Currently the doctors let him go back to the UK to work on his new video that will be coming out soon. He then has to return to Canada for the rest of his treatment that is quite long. You won't regret checking out his music. He does so many different genres that it's mind blowing. He also has been chats with his fans often via Twitch while in Canada to keep us updated on his progress and how he's doing. I think I can speak for thousands of us that we truly love him. Also, I'm a long time friend of Bill W and Dr Bob. Keep up the good work!

Great reaction, Elliot - seen so many reactions to this song where the reactor is left completely speechless - but you kept going and reacted - respect, dude! Sick Boi is a good follow-up, or The Hunger, for the rap flexing, his busking vids are crazy good too with The Big Push - I shot The Sheriff is legendary, as is their cover of War Pigs, and the Tale of Jenny and Screech is another example of his "Bardcore". He has plenty of amazing songs in his back catalog - would recommend "Humble", "Blind Eyed" (with Sam Tompkins) and "Chalk Outlines" (with Chinchilla) - but you can't go wrong picking at random!
