MacDonald feels the nearest to early church fathers of any I've encountered in my 1/2 century - thx be to God for his gifts & influence in our world 🙏🏼

The Unspoken Sermons - if they don't evoke a craving to be close to God & love & trust Him - I don't know what will

I'd like to say I'm surprised you'd cover George MacDonald, most of his beliefs where explicitly a reaction against Calvinism.

Are you saying that Calvinism is the only theology worth discussing or that you are pleasantly surprised that he is discussing Macdonald?

George MacDonald was very evidently a convinced universalist. I really don't see how you can read unspoken sermons and not know that.

Very interesting. As a Norwegian Christian, unlearned in Anglosphere literature history, George MacDonald will be a very welcome addition to my to-read list! Thanks for sharing!

Dr. Kristin Jeffrey Johnson argues for a Aurthurian background to Phantastes, which arguably makes perfect sense out of the text.

MacDonald definitely teaches universalism

I once read a novel by Maria Edgeworth or Fanny Burney and felt sorry for Jane Austen because they were the closest thing to Jane Austen that she had to read, and Jane Austen they weren't. Perhaps the same is true about MacDonald being the closest thing to Lewis that Lewis had to read. Which makes his love of MacDonald more understandable. We have the luxury of comparison with later authors who improves on various genres. They had no such luxury, but enjoyed the books they had available with a gratitude we cannot muster for them.
