I will never get over the irony that the Church of England has such strict rules about divorce, when it can easily be argued that the entire denomination was created because Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife
@TheGoldielover

Not to mention that they had no problem with a divorced King in the past when they could have spoken up. When the Hanoverian line of the Electress Sophia was chosen to inherit should Queen Anne die childless, they knew that her son George was divorced, as that happened several years before the Act of Settlement 1710. Their main concern at that time was that he wasn't a Catholic. So many of the Stuart descendants were, but the Hanoverian line were staunch Protestants. The Electress Sophia's mother was a Stuart, the eldest daughter of James I, which was why they were offered the throne.

True! Same goes for the “Defender of the Faith” title which was given to Henry VIII by the pope for the treatise he wrote condemning the teachings of Martin Luther. The monarchy is lots of things but logical isn’t one of them.

It would have been in 1972 instead of 1952, and there would have been no George VI, as he died before his elder brother. Everything else would likely be the same as today. There would still have been a Jubilee celebration last year, but it would have been her Golden Jubilee rather than her Platinum Jubilee.

Reusing a crown would give it a dynastic meaning. It’s better than spending money on a new crown. What makes Queen Mary’s crown better is that it was she who paid for the crown, not the state. It’s also a symbol of a humility and responsibility. Plus Queen Mary wanted it to be the official crown for consorts, so she’d be happy too.

One historical detail that I like about King George and Queen Mary and that some people tend to forget is that they were kings when the Titanic sank. All the royal family attended a memorial service for victims of the sinking back in April 19, 1912, the day after the RMS Carpathia had arrived in New York City with the survivors. King George, along with his sons Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), Prince Albert (later King George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II), and Prince Henry, as well as his daughter Princess Mary, and of course his wife, Queen Mary, attended a memorial service for victims of the sinking at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral on April 19, 1912

I've just read another set of foolish comments here on how (1) monarchy is a superior system of gov't. "Statistically speaking, [under a monarchy] we the people have a better chance at life." (😆); and (2) that Charles *will do* so much for climate and "save us." That's why he's gotten so much hate [jealousy, fear, by those who have controlled until now]. (🙄🙄😒😒😒). The first is not even worth discussing, only to say that it's astonishing how truly dumb people can be. The 2nd, was something I didn't expect to read. A point people are missing is that Queen Mary’s crown was created to be the permanent crown not just for herself, but for all Queens Consort in the future. That came unstuck because Queen Mary was still alive and kicking when her daughter-in-law Elizabeth was to be crowned as the Consort of George VI. The trouble was that the old Queen Mary was going to be present at the Coronation, and expecting to wear ‘her’ crown. Ripping the old girl’s crown off her head to give to her daughter-in-law seemed a bit cruel, so they knocked up a different one for Elizabeth. That particular crown was only meant to be a one-off, just for that one particular Consort. Going back to Queen Mary’s crown is just reverting to Plan A. Edit: A point I forgot about is that Queen Mary commissioned that crown herself, and paid for it with her own money, so it really was “her” crown.

Interesting point. Hypothetically, if Queen Camilla survives King Charles, would that mean that the Queen Mary Crown should not be used for the coronation of King William and Queen Katherine?
@lap8329
@lap8329 Жыл бұрын
@@rogerd777 I think they would play that one by ear. The Queen Mary Crown was intended by Mary herself for the Consort to wear going forward, I don’t think she had expected to be alive at the next Coronation. They had to make a new one for Elisabeth as Mary was still around, and wanted her Crown. (And why not, it was hers - she bought and paid for it herself back in the day.) I can’t see Camilla making a fuss - I‘m pretty sure she would go with whatever fitted the overall plans best. If they wanted the QM Crown for Catherine, there’s lots of other bling - the I950’s Elisabeth Crown or the George IV Diadem for instance. From the practical point of view, I’d go with the George IV Diadem - it is lighter and easier to wear than the heavy crowns. She was struggling with the weight of the QM on Coronation day, and it might be a major difficulty umpteen years down the line.

Correction- Queen Mary's crown, with its flowing, curving arches, and its date of 1911, is plainly not Art Deco in design. It is Art Nouveau. The Art Deco crown is that of Queen Elizabeth, 1937, with its plainer, squarer outline. I have seen this erroneous description elsewhere.

She chose the crown I hoped she would. I've always thought the 1911 crown was the most attractive of all of the existing consort crowns. The arches are far more elegant than those on the Queen Mother's crown. I'll be looking forward to seeing it on the big day. Queen Mary was well known for altering and designing various pieces of jewellery to her own specifications. She commissioned the Lovers Knot tiara that Catherine now wears. That originally had pearls on the top, but they were replaced with diamonds a bit later. She also altered the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, which had been a wedding gift and was the late Queen's favourite by also removing the pearls on top. Both changes were for the better in my opinion. She accumulated a lot of the jewellery that is currently worn by the royals. She wasn't known as the Magpie for nothing.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but to be honest, I’m not a big fan of George V and Queen Mary. They both had such terribly cold eyes and generally don’t seem like great people, however effective they were for securing their family’s position… I’m not surprised at Edward VIII’s remark of her in his private letter, even though he himself was no saint either. George VI seemed nice though :)

@@Alusnovalotus Elizabeth II is definitely an improved descendant… Queen Mary may have been dutiful, but she failed as a mother for not noticing her own children being abused. As for George V, he was so critical and harsh that his kids developed digestion problems from the anxiety of having to eat with him during family dinners. Needless to say, they may have been effective constitutional monarchs, but as people (not royals, but people), they aren’t that extraordinary imho. In contrast, George VI was affable, strong, loving towards his daughters, and possessed a gift of dry wit (which he passed on to Elizabeth II). These qualities alone make me respect him on a much higher level than his parents. Having said this, everyone’s entitled to their own thoughts and this is, of course, a subjective topic. They are all dead and buried now, so I guess it doesn’t really matter. Have a nice day!

It’s rather annoying that people keep referring to Camilla as “queen consort”. There is no need to keep repeating the “consort” part. Every previous queen of England who was married to a reigning monarch, such as Queen Mary, were also “consorts”, yet the phrase is never used when talking about them. Camilla’s rank or station within the Royal family is akin to that of any queen who has gone before her, who was married to a king. I believe people keep insisting on using this phrase, because they hate her guts. By insisting on continuously using it, they are trying to diminish her status as queen.

Queen Mary was not a kleptomaniac -- she just had an encyclopedic knowledge of all the furniture, ceramics, clocks, silverware, etc. that once belonged to a royal collection. George III's sons and other members of the Royal Family including her own brothers were notorious for handing out royal objects to girlfriends, lovers, and illegal wives. Queen Mary would sport a chair that once belonged in Windsor Castle for example, and hinted broadly that the chair would "be much at home with its siblings in Windsor Castle", and she could not leave a dinner party thinking about the poor object sitting there all alone, that sort of thing. When a host resisted her, she would send her driver around the next day to pick it up anyway. Few people had the social postion to resist her, a famous story exists that she once visited once of the Royal Aunts who lived in Kensington Palace, either a daughter or Victoria or of King Edward and pulled this line. The Royal personage's simple reply to Queen Mary about a clock in question was simply "it stays there".

@@rms5993 you may have been convinced of that, but it is not true. It was Queen Elizabeth who called upon Charles after Harry was born and his devastation to say enough is enough. By that time at least ten affairs were very public and numerous public dalliances strongly likely, Diana had decimated him. The hoax interview had convinced Diana and those without knowledge that an affair with Camilla had started. Her husband- not the nicest of chaps and friends with some of the perpetrators- had happily entered his two bob lies, too. Charles young Equerry, seventeen has been known as Harry's 'second Dad' ever since. His name is Mark Dyer and he has been there for him, I hope he still is, but I would assume Megan's dispensed with him, too. Queen Elizabeth has been cruelly portrayed in the hoax and following scam as a cold, distant harradon, especially in the Crown. It's just not true. Queen Camilla has been a tremendous support and her stoic silence against the hate and the lies to protect Diana's boys and memory is verging on saintly. She works incredibly hard and her programs and charities are not easy. One of the most challenging is bringing women and their children into safety from Conflict Zones who have been brutally sexually assaulted and raped as War Trophies. Most often have been forced to watch it happening to their little ones and the little ones forced to watch Mums. They become untouchable in several regions and Camilla with the phenomenal women involved provides everything they need to heal and for the life they choose. Many are highly qualified, now and living their happiest lives possible. Can you see just how far those lies are from this wonderful woman? Diana's affairs ended her own marriage and several others. Can you see how far those lies are from the vibrant joy focused woman? We loved Diana so much, you deserve to know the real person. She was no lamb to the slaughter she was far too sassy for that. @@suzyfarnham3165 Agree, it wouldn't have made any difference in the end, since Edward and Wallis never had any children - the crown would still have gone to Elizabeth; it would just have been twenty years later than actually happened (Edward died in 1972). But in that scenario, Elizabeth would have had 20 more years to enjoy her marriage, raise her children, and live a relatively "normal" life before having to shoulder the burden of being Queen. What I wonder is, would Charles and Andrew have turned out differently if Elizabeth had had that additional 20 years to be able to focus on her children's upbringing, instead of being forced to move it farther back on the burner to take over the duties of the monarch at such a young age? Another thing to wonder about, what direction would the country and WWII have taken if Edward had kept the throne, given his attitude toward the Third Reich? The outcome of WWII might have been very different, and not in a good way. There is, though, the possibility that Edward only latched onto Herr H. out of rebellion against his family. I'm sure somebody has probably written an alternate-history novel on that premise.

Charlotte, Caroline of Brandenburg, and Caroline of Brunswick all came between Mary of Modena and Adelaide and all didn't have their own crowns, so no, the last 6 QCs didn't all have their own crowns. Caroline of Brunswick did have her marriage annulled before her husband's coronation, but Charlotte and Caroline of Brandenburg were both crowned. Not sure what crown they used, although I'm guessing it was Mary of Modena's.

@@suej9329 Perhaps We wont ever know will we. I think the fact both Charles & Camilla where seeing each other while married just throws out the marriage vow & its meaning to their spouses. I put the blame on Queen Elizabeth for matching Charles with Princess Diana with their significant age differences & how Charles disregarded Diana's feeling in this & now we have a principless Queen Consort & king on the Throne. A marriage between 2 is sacred. Anyway it is what it is. I will keep my focus on Prince William & Kate.

I mean, Queen Mary's crown was the least controversial choice given the other options and the circumstances surrounding the coronation. But given whose head the crown will be resting on, controversy will never be far away, because as far as most people are concerned, Camilla's the evil old witch who took Diana's rightful place. I loved Diana as much as anyone else, but we can't undo what has already happened. You have a choice of accepting this and moving forward or harboring bitterness and longing for the rest of your lives over something that will never be.

Nope, people also have the choice of speaking out and reminding her how disgusting she is, never letting her rest easy thinking she got away with stealing Diana’s place. Hopefully some brave souls will give her the Ann Boleyn treatment and yell “whore” at her coronation procession.

Agreed. Am I a Camilla fan? Not really. I don’t hate her, I’m just indifferent. But we can’t can’t keep saying “it should have been Diana”. It never would have been Diana. It was an unhappy union. They divorced. She passed away. Let’s allow the poor woman to rest.

@@BiG-JuPO1O1 I understand that and Diana was a very wonderful woman, but it doesn’t change anything. Even if she hadn’t died, she still wouldn’t have been Queen because of the divorce. Do people think she should have stayed in an unhappy marriage where she was treated so poorly?

Another really interesting video, thanks. Small amendment-Queen Mary wasn't a first cousin to Queen Victoria. Mary's mother Mary Adelaide was her 1st cousin. They share the same grandparents (George III and Charlotte). Also at the beginning it states the last 6 Queen Consorts but there is a gap of 4 between Mary of Modena and Queen Adelaide. (The wives of George I, II and III inc aforementioned Charlotte), and George IV. Two weren't crowned (George I's wife imprisoned etc). Also as a general note, why can't Camilla have a new crown? I learn from Lindsay that Mary paid for hers out of her personal finances, so surely Camilla is allowed to do the same? If you can't allow something for a coronation then when can you. Sounds like Camilla has been advised to do this even if the public purse isn't raided.

Queen Victoria and Queen Mary's mother Mary Adelaide were grandchildren of King George the third and therefore first cousins. This means that Queen Mary was actually the second cousin of Victoria's son Edward. So, when she and George wed, he literally married his aunt despite them being somewhat close in age 😅

Well of course Edward wrote that he didn't like his mother later on in her life. She was against his marriage to Wallis and for him being sent away out of sight and out of mind to the benefit of the monarchy after the abdication,. Nor was she happy about him undoing all her hard work to preserve the monarchy by absconding from his duties and eventually abdicating. I also imagine it was easier to be involved with the upbringing of her grandkids than her own kids as she was no longer having to fulfil the duties of queen.
