In this video, I’ll answer the question, “who was Uncle Sam?” The United States of America goes by several monikers: America, the U.S. of A., the Land of Opportunity, and ‘Murica, just to name a few of them. However, the most popular and the most commonly used one would undoubtedly be “Uncle Sam.” This is the country personified - a white-haired, stern-looking man with stars on his tophat, pointing at viewers and demanding they listen.

I knew he was based on someone or something, but I thought it originated in WWII. I had no idea it went so far back or that he was a real, normal person.

The recruiting guy Uncle Sam painting for the Army kinda scared me as a kid. My uncle who served during 'Nam be like, "yeah, the Navy had a better one: 'Join the Navy, See the World,'" and he went to the Navy recruiter that day.

In Nova Scotia, Judge Halliburton wrote a story called "The Clockmaker" about a yankee peddler called Sam Slick who travelled through the Maritime Provinces. For people in Eastern Canada he became the personification of "Uncle Sam".

Uncle Sam is a legend, Uncle Sam is a symbol Uncle sam.....is one of the most important persons in the entire American history ever since the two terrible wars started but we still had many brave men as soldiers fight and risk their lives for both America and the rest of the American citizens and with that we should always respect and salute our brave soldiers and brave veterans

I know everyone says that "Uncle Sam" came from Samuel Wilson, but I had read in a history book once that the Thomas Nast images did not come from him. It said that Nast had read one of Henry Adams' books in which when referencing his family tree, since everyone already knew it and he didn't feel the need to elaborate, he simply referred to Sam Adams as "my Uncle Sam" and it was this reference that compelled Nast to create images of a national "uncle". How funny that the most famous image was created by a man named Flagg.

Hmm...I hadn’t heard that before. I wonder if that’s being mixed up with Washington DC. Residents of Washington DC are allowed to vote but they basically don’t have any representation in Congress because Washington DC is a federal district and not a state. Does that help a bit?

Hartmann talk about👍. Only "later in time". In a later episode he seemed, within another subject, aggetated for one: (correctly so!) the aspect that "the statues are of the occult"; he said. It's not Christian to put such statues "on display". And a biblical statue is, by God's Word, also forbidden. 1:15 Interesting choice of words: "...but the well-meaning soldiers took it to mean 'Uncle Sam's'." Why not say "The soldiers began to fondly refer to the US stamp found on the barrels of beef as 'Uncle Sam' and it was popularized." The former gives me the impression that the soldiers were dimwits in not knowing that "US" stands for "United States."
