SJ and NJ lost? You have no idea what you’re taking about. How can SJ be a loser by collecting draft picks as the worst team in the NHL (Chicago drafted Bedard), so their future is already much better. Being able to move that terrible Hertyl contract (DW was a moron for giving that contract to him as he obviously didn’t for the sharks timeline) for a prospect with potential and a 1st (giving them 4 firsts over the next 2 drafts, with 3 of them being high picks, of which 2 will be 1-5th overall). New Jersey didn’t add a goalie and someone who could actually play solid D, but it wasn’t expected they would do so before the deadline, will look to do so in the off-season. They couldn’t come to an agreement with Tyf on an extension. Unlikely he would have fetched a good Return bc any team that would trade for him likely viewed him as a rental (he wants a lot of $$ and term on an extension but the last 3-5 years of a 7-8yr extension will an overpayment.

Ekholm, if traded to the Leafs, would be the best defenseman they’ve had since Brian Leetch lol and if you don’t count him.. Borje Salming 4. Desharnais is 6’7 225lb every time he steps on the ice

Tarasenko 1 year contract at 2.5M was fine the NMC made no sense. The contract was built to be moved at the deadline if Ottawa was to have a poor year, can always work at resigning him if Ottawa is in the playoffs or use him like a trade deadline acquisition by just keeping him to July. The NMC must have been a push from Tarasenko's camp if Ottawa is missing the playoffs gets to pick the team he goes to which he did. Ottawa makes the playoffs he wins as well by being on a playoff team.

Even more for Vegas, they are actually adding for the future. They would have made the exact same moves in a few months in the offseason, whether miss the playoffs or make it. Hanafin as an upgrade for the aging Martinez, Hertl as an upgrade on Stephenson. I think Mantha is a dice roll, bid low bet like they did on Stephenson. If he fits and they can sign him as a middle six guy, he could he quitely huge for them. Remember the first time they ever missed the playoffs was the year before they won the Cup.

Boston deserves a black eye on this deadline not just because of their overpay on Peeke and getting the remains of Pat Maroon to do a Lucic impression. It's because the teams they are most competing with in Florida and Carolina went for it. They addressed their needs in a big way, they got better, and are even scarier than they were. The Bruins are....kinda the same. It's understandable why they couldn't make any moves with the sheer number of no trade clauses they've handed out and their cap situation, but the reality is they were lapped during the deadline. And they they were already sliding hard since the all-star break, if there's a team that needed a shake up and addressing of needs it's the Bruins. Really, they didn't do those things. Third D was brutal, it will continue to be. Scoring outside of feeding Pasta and Marchy remains a problem. Team defense and depth are lacking. They got tougher with Maroon, but it's like Ryan Reaves on the Leafs. He's a pest, he's a fighter, he will hit hard....and doesn't do a lot else anymore. And Peeke wasn't even starting on one of the worst teams in the league. Forbort was playing injured so maybe that's an upgrade, but man is that a hard sell especially for Peeke's salary and what they gave up for him. It's tough to make impactful moves when you're handcuffed by no move clauses, lack of assets, and zero cap but those aren't anyone else's fault but the team themselves. They pushed it in last year knowing this year would be brutal to do anything and here they are.

not just florida and carolina, the leafs gave them a rough, tough night (ignoring the score obviously) and that was with most of that team down with a flu... not to mention it was also before edmunson and dewar joined the team, two guys who *really* like to rough it up... last night made them realize that in order to just survive the first round, they needed to get more tough, but only bringing in pat maroon definitely was underwhelming as hell.

Updgraded forward depth with Trenin and Duhaime, and took some of the pressure off of Josh Manson on that right side defense with Sean Walker. Loser: SJ Sharks, the fact that San Jose is using one of their retention slots for the next 6 years is sad. Vegas took their best player and two thirds. Sure the Sharks got two firsts (Edstrom and an actual first) but they now have one less retention slot for 6 MORE YEARS. They got absolutely stuffed in a locker on this deal.

The Oilers exposed Markstrom 2 years ago. It was the right move not go for him. At least publicly lol. Obviously I'm an Oilers fan. I agree we didn't do much at the deadline. However, over the course of a season, much has been done. We sent a 5x5 million dollar sacrificial lamb to the AHL, fired a well beloved coach and defensive coach, hired a new head coach and defensive coach, and, most importantly got our players to buy in and adjust to a newer, stingier zone type of defense in the dzone, a more defensive minded neutral zone strategy but also remaining aggressive and fast on the breakout, zone entries and in the o-zone. This has lead to a turnaround in our season and excellent 5v5 play on most nights. Yes, we need a top 4 RD, but I think moving Ceci down to the 3rd pair and giving Desharnais some minutes in the 2nd pair stems the bleeding there a bit. The reliance on the chaos of 11 and 7 that Woodcroft employed is gladly(for now) mostly a thing of the past. Knoblauch still blends the lines a bit though. I think changing the team's defensive strategy was the number one thing that needed adjusting after losing to the AVS and VGK in similarly fashion 2 years in row. All this growth together as a roster should foster the competitive spirit and the chemistry needed to make big plays at crucial moments come playoff time. Adding a an "all-in" type of player so close to the playoffs might break this built in chemistry. Look what happened to the Leafs a couple years ago with O'Reilly and co. Time will tell if employing the less is more philosophy at this year's deadline was a smart move or not.

Calling the Calgary to Edmonton trip the most boring drive ever is a little unfair. The drive is actually gorgeous in the summer, smooth with canola fields leading into the distant mountains as you get move farther south. It can be pretty in its simplicity, but Alberta makes up for it with the mountain drives. I also don't know how I am feeling about this assessment on the Oilers, with Henrique they are one of the deepest teams up the middle and have a fair amount of flexibility in the forward group, Carrick adds some grit and size to the bottom 6, assessing two real areas of need. They also didn't even lose any roster players, which is a huge win, that seemed almost like a certainty. A large add at D wasn't super realistic, I am not sure what Oilers fans were expecting given how up against the cap they are. Ceci is not a bad defenseman at his cap hit, I question where a proper substantial upgrade there even comes from, that narrative of a hole at top 4 right D has taken off so much to the point where it has been exaggerated.

I actually like the Leafs, but you just can't look at that defense and say with a straight face that it's a cup winning group of defensemen. I thought they might go out and grab a Tanev or someone significant to play with Reilly. Lyubushkin? Edmondson? These guys are not real difference makers. I feel bad for Morgan Reilly. He's already a fringe #1 and they expect this guy to play with scrubs every night. Only way it works is if Matthews, Nylander and Marner go off. It could happen but it doesn't feel like they have the best chance.

West is impossible to guess. Jets look great now, great top 9 and a very strong D with elite goalie. Toffoli is one of these middle 6 players that can really shine. Avs look good, they added depth and might get players back. Byram might hurt, but he was kinda the odd man out. Stars look great also, Tanev for that price and not even giving up a 1st? Great. Oilers added 2 depth players and that well needed middle 6 center. The question is, if their D and goaltending is enough. Vegas - who knows. Hanifin was a steal, Mantha is a good pickup, and nobody saw Hertl coming. Stone will be healty for the playoffs, as always. But let`s see how all of this plays out. I do like what FLA did. Get Okposo and Tarasenko, to vets that can play whatever role needed, without big changes. Same is true for Boston. It`s running well, don`t change much. Canes did really well. Kuznetsov is a gamble. But at 3,9m you can take that. Would have been a Vegas move. Guentzel is great. Bunting didn`t have much value with the Canes and his contract, and if you win or make the finals, you pay that 1st with a smile. I also like what DET, Philly, LA and TBL did. Sometimes you just pick up what`s on sale or if there`s nothing that really fits, you move on.

vote for underwhelming: Washington Capitals. Could have sold off a goalie to give room for bringing up prospects who are ready, could have gotten good value for a netminder this season. I don't think the goalie market will be as good in the coming years when they will be forced to sell/move on/dump/let walk.

Steve,& Adam-your 2 were appropriate & clearly the consensus biggest winners in each conference. But Jessie obviously just wanted to pick somebody from Canada.Jets had a good deadline but my Avs improved the most in the central & it's not really that close-at least on paper.Of course nobody knows for sure today. All of this is just "on paper,& in theory" for now.Avs wouldve won the central deadline-merely by fixing their gaping 2c hole-but did much more than that. But at least WPG was an actual winner-despite getting Tanev-which was a good move-Dallas was an overall loser.Cuz they lost significant ground at the deadline to Colorado,WPG,& Nashville in the division alone. And if ya factor in the Pacific-Dallas lost ground to every west playoff contender except probably LA. And I'm counting guys like Monahan,Lindholm,& Parise as deadline acquisitions-even though they happened a few wks ago. Denver already was among the most likely-but now has the best chance of any city to host both the NBA & NHL Finals this June at Ball arena where I work. Only Boston is even in the argument. Obviously it'd take alot to go right to get both teams there for any city-like Miami did last year in a totally unlikely way-with both teams 8 seeds I believe. Of course that was same city-but not same building. Working the NBA Finals last yr was an amazing experience,& insanely busy.(I missed the 2022 Cup Finals-as I started bout 6 weeks after) I can't even imagine what both simultaneously would look like-but it'd be unbelievable to find out. After what the Avs organization just did-it's a significantly better chance of happening today than just 2 days ago.Avs always had a decent shot with as much top end talent as anybody.(3 of the top 10-15 players on earth & 2 more fringe All stars-not counting Giorgiev who did make ASG) but also had 1 gaping hole,& 2 less significant weaknesses-they seem to have fixed. (failing to get a veteran #2 or even #3 goalie is the only minor issue I have)But the Nuggets were much more likely to get back. That might not be the case now.Especially since the NBA West is even deeper than the NHL West.

Some winners off the top: Vegas, Avalanche, Jets, Canes, Cats Some teams I expected more from: Canucks, Leafs, Kings Losers: Bruins, Sens The only team I really feel I need to explain myself on is Vancouver. I think the Canucks could have taken a bigger swing since Lindholm hasn't panned out quite like expected. I don't think they needed a star or anything (even tho that could help) but 3rd line and 4th line playoff warriors, kinda like a Devante Smith-Pelly during the Caps 18 run. Alot of these guys don't have alot of playoff experience and it could be their Achilles if they have to face the bigger dogs like Vegas, Avs, Stars, etc. Again, not a loser but I think they could have added another piece or two.

I actually think Vancouver would have benefited from a top 6 forward much more than depth guys. Their depth guys are fine as is since their bottom two lines are working well despite some injuries to depth forwards. But I feel like they only have 4 true top 6 guys and 2 middle 6 guys in the top 6, while their third line and fourth line are top tier. The blue line is where they need depth. Their 6 d men are good but if any of them go down they will struggle.

I agree that Edmonton doing very little was disappointing. Hyman is having a career that he, let's face it, most likely will not be replicating again. You still have McDavid and Draisatl. The moves they made certainly make them deeper, which is important of course because with McDavid and Draisatl off the ice the Oilers don't score a lot of goals, but I expected this to be the year they empty the cupboards and really take a swing at a number one defenseman and/or goalie. And like Adam said, maybe they did and they just couldn't get anything done, but nobody cares about that excuse when you're skating off the ice without a cup.

With that said we can still win the cup. But so did LA in 8 spot. I beleive we needed to add more to help our team out. We don't need picks and prospect we need a cup. One of Lilgrean and Timmins can fill the top 4 right hand spot I believe it. Timmins is a champ! But again more snott is needed in top 9 even if that does work and timmins is back in or lilgren steps up. I don't know much about everything. Toronto didnt win or lose this deadline. There really wasn't a point for the Leafs to swing for the fences with the players that were available, the fact that they lacked cap space and they were not willing to give up the little bit of draft picks and prospects that we do have left from the Dubas era. We needed some toughness and depth on D and a suitable PK forward. That's what we got. I applaud Brad for not selling the farm for a 1 year window when there is more work that needs to be done this off season to revamp the teams D core. Keep your prospect depth and picks for later down the road. As I think they are looking at building this team into a cup winner for 2 to 3 years from now when Tavares contract is not anchoring them down and it gives time for their young guns to grow into the league. Similarly to what Dallas stars are doing now with all their young stars and old franchise players. Ie. Wyatt Johnson, Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, with Benn, Seguin, Pavelski etc. Thats the model we should be looking at building the Leafs into.

Looser for me are the Nucks. They had a great season, overpaid for Lindholm and now it`s not working out. They have been leading the West and now nobody ranks them as favorite. Avs, Jets and Dallas look scary, so does Vegas. I understand the criticism on EDM, but was there an upgrade available for their D? The deal i would have really wanted them to do was to get Tanev for a 2nd and 3rd (2025), that would have helped them a lot and at 1,125m cap it would have fit their cap. But i doubt that this deal was available for EDM, as Tanev was with the Flames. Right now, EDM got a 3rd line center and a 4th line depth player together with a 3rd pair D. Their D doesn`t look as strong as Jets, Stars, Vegas, Avs. But do you believe Avs will win with Georgiev and Annunen? Other teams have these weak points too. West is anyones, i wouldn`t rate the Oilers top, Jets and Avs might have smth together.

Strongly disagree with Jesse... which is rare. What assets did Ottawa need to give up to acquire Tarasenko? Oh that's right, nothing. Net positive return for that asset regardless of what the team got back. I keep saying it as well, Tarasenko would only move to Florida. Florida is not going to resign him; they do not have the room to do so. He was a fit in Ottawa. He allegedly likes the city and the locker room. Current management did him right, do not be surprised if he resigns in Ottawa in the offseason. Besides, Kubalik, who on the team did Ottawa need to trade? Nobody, and nobody was taking Kubalik, even for Future Considerations. They can wait till the offseason and make the moves then. Claiming Katchouk from Chicago was also savvy. Give him a look in the bottom 6, RFA at the end of the year. Like what you see resign him. Don't like what you see, either let him walk or package him up. The tools and assets to get this team turned around in the offseason are there. Staois will start putting his stamp on this team. It didn't have to be at this deadline. $3.5M in dead cap coming off the books. A Hamonic buyout cheaper than Colin White's recapture and only Pinto in their core that needs a contract. This team isn't dead in the water. They'll rebound hard next year.
