In this review video, Taryl puts this Toro 724 QXE Snow Master snow blower against this Ariens Crossover. We got about a foot of snow and it's real wet and heavy so we'll see how they both perform under some heavy loads. If either snow blower look like something you could benefit from be sure to check out Ariens and Toro's sites or visit your local dealer.

I fixed up a 40 year old snow blower with a 8hp Tecumseh motor and a 30" scoop and it would run rings round that plastic junk. I never have to stop, it just ploughs straight through. I paid $50 for it and spent $120 to get it up to scratch. It is built like a tank, all metal construction. Now I''m glad I put in the effort to do it!

As soon as I saw TD start with the Toro I knew something was wrong. That machine needed the carb adjusted as TD said. RPM was way too low. Put the 824 QXE out there properly set up and it would have been no contest. And most people won't let ghe snow "age" that long. I would never buy that Ariens. That auger looks like a nightmare to service and that's the only propulsion there is! No thanks! Nice video for comparison in tough conditions.

The new Ariens are actually a BEAST of a machine. The model they are using? Not so much, have to step up to the larger Ariens that are self propelled with a dual auger belt design and those things will chew through almost any snow you put in front of them. They're actually really impressive machines and top anything else I've come across for new equipment thus far. @@NY411Info Yes, but is it actually a lower range ratio? Probably not, or not by much. The Personal Pace system on a lawn mower pretty much relies on how much belt slippage there is and/or how deep the belt rides in the transmission and crank pulley, therefore regulating the walking drive speed. I can't see how this effectively works on a snowblower to replicate the torque of a traditional friction disc drive type set to one of the lower speed settings.

I like the idea of a narrow 20 inch snowblower. What we need is a narrow 20 inch wide, 24 inch tall super powerful one with the horse power and drive of a 30 incher for the soul purpose of making the initial cut through that heavy overnight snow we tend to wake up to. When they are wide it's like hitting a brick wall. A powerful narrow one like I mentioned would cut through like a knife.

One thing nobody mentions much critiquing snow blowers is those plastic chutes. I got a Craftsman years ago. It is all metal except from the rotating ring to the deflector on the chute it's plastic. I wouldn't have bought it for that reason but figured they can make plastic and strength they want these days. Day one, right out of the shed, it threw a chunk of ice. That split the deflector as it left the chute. I melted holes with a hot nail and propane torch then stitched it with zip ties. I was able to use it. As I plowed the end of the drive there was a rock size of an egg in the snow bank the plow made. When it threw that, it split the chute itself. I fixed it the same way to finish the job. Sears sent me another chute. I used tin snips and made a ring out of heating duct metal riveting and using JB weld to reinforce the lower edge of the new chute with a ring of metal. I sanded it all down. Covered the whole thing in layers of fiberglass mat and epoxy. I had lots kicking around from fixing a boat. Then I painted the chute and deflector to protect the epoxy from UV. Sears said plastic is fine since it isn't designed to throw rocks. I live on a dirt road but the drive is paved. It won't break now. I like a discharge system that is all metal so it doesn't crack.

Just goes to show you that dual stage is not always better than single stage. What's more important is having a drive assist.. when you have to push something on your own you are basically doing a workout.. backing up plowing into it.. I'VE SEEN SO MANY VIDEOS OF THE TORO SNOWMASTER 724 AND 824 AND IT DOES JUST AS GOOD AS THE TORO POWERMAX 824 AND 826.. It's a hell of a lot lighter you don't need a reverse. So much easier to push around.. I've seen the snowmaster go through 21 in of snow down by the driveway on KZfaq with no problem.. Pretty amazing Toro is always so innovative trying to find new ways to save us money to do the same job.. Absolutely brilliant.. If you don't believe me go type in SNOWMASTER 824 IN A BLIZZARD. YOU WILL BE SHOCKED. And Toro claims that it's 40% faster than the two stage version is pretty much true. I don't know how reliable though self-paced thing but it works fantastic saves tons of time I guess there's not much clogging with a single stage when you have a big opening and nothing in its way to go out the shoot.

I have a 40 YO Toro 724. The self propelled and extra 2 hp really makes it perfect for the snow you are clearing. Those both seem like it would be a killer for a 60+ old man. My son now has it and the ignition died last winter...so he is upgrading it to electronic ignition. If we were to get a new one we would buy the 828 Toro as I would love the quick stick. We moved to sunny FL, no snow here!

It looks like both operators are accustomed to using power-driven 2-stage units. I'd bet a Honda HS621, which would be in the same league, would carve through that snow with FAR less human effort. The first pass would still be a slow process. After that, just adjust your overlap to bite off as much as the machine is comfortable with. Let the machine do nearly all the work!

Powersmart, aka the Chonda, aka the Harbor Freight Predator engines. It's all the same, junk. I'd be halfway tempted to replace the engine with a GX Commercial Engine. At that point I'd probably use the snowblower I have instead or buy something with a halfway decent engine. I have an early Powersmart from 2010. A Yard Machines from Walmart when I didn't know what I was buying. The metal is all good on it. But all the plastic parts are failing due to age, dry rot and time. I'm waiting for the plastic choke control to fail. Just a question of when as it is already showing stress fractures.

Nice practical comparison, under the worst of conditions! Tough decision between the two. The Toro does have some really nice features, minus the plastic trans, but it's longevity concerns me. The Toro doesn't seem to have a low speed for deep snow so it slams into it and stalls, and the Ariens drive means if it doesn't have solid ground to pull against then it doesn't pull so you have to slam it into the snow. Just bad design on both.

Great review guys. Both of these are sort of hybrids and both have good and bad qualities. With the Toro I'd just get the 821 single stage myself, but for someone who's elderly or in not that great of physical shape this one might do the trick. I think you'd be smart to snow blow twice rather than let it get this deep when using either of these machines. With the Ariens if you have any kind of incline I think you'd be working yourself to death.
