I couldn't agree more. No matter who was the leader of Germany after one of these assassination attempts, the Reich was doomed to fail. @brucesim2003
@brucesim2003 Жыл бұрын
The problem with this scenario, is that the army simply wouldn't have followed Himmler. They were already extremely resentful of the Waffen SS, and would have revolted if the SS took over. With Hitler's death, the oath of loyalty no longer applies, and if it were the army that removed Hitler, they certainly wouldn't then just stand aside while SS thugs seized the state. In my opinion, there would have been 3 options, all of which still end in German defeat: 1: Surrender, as mentioned here. By '43, that is the most likely outcome, as most sane Germans knew the war was lost. There might be significant resistance to surrender in the east, however. 2: Someone more competent at grand strategy leads the war effort. Wouldn't be Rommel. He was not a strategist at all, and had arguably been promoted above his ability. You might see a military dictatorship as the Germans had in WW1. Von Manstein might have been tapped. Having just come of 3rd Kharkov, he had just shown he could work miracles. In any case, regardless who leads the military, the Germans still lose - it just might take longer. 3: If Himmler does make a power grab, then for the reason stated above, you have a civil war. Probably won't be a long one, because the military vacuum left on the fronts will lead to collapse, probably by year's end, if not sooner. Leaves room for a 'stab in the back' theory to take root. Oh, hang on, been there, done that.

If it was a military coup and the military seized power, wasn’t it likely to have gone to someone like Ludwig Beck? He was going to be head of state had the July 1944 plot succeeded. And I believe their goal was a negotiated peace with the west. With the right statesman and the right head of the military (Mannstein, Guderian maybe) it’s an interesting “what if” to speculate how receptive the west would’ve been to letting de-Hitlerized Germany duke it out with an un-aided Stalin

If Hitler had been assassinated in 1943, Germany would still have been defeated, but the post war map of Europe may have been different. 2:56 I think, if Germany would surrender at that point, then it could have been made into an conditional surrender. At unconditional surrender at that point seems unlikely to be accepted by the new military Government even if they know that they will lose. The War could even last longer with the Military focusing mainly on defense after their failed peace initiative. Some kind of secret deal would have been likely, even if the Allies stated, that they would only accept a unconditional surrender. An unneeded prolongement of the war would probably not be very popular in the Allied Countries that could be restored without a long slog and the US could focus on Japan.

There is no way Germany would have accepted an unconditional surrender in 1943. You really don’t understand history. The Germans were very fearful of the USSR and saw the war against Communism as the ‘war for Europe’. Even in 1945 when the war was a foregone conclusion the soldiers fought on - not for Hitler, but because they wanted to save their wives, children and culture from the Soviets and the destruction an “unconditional surrender” would bring.

The head accountant's answer (after calculation and so on) was something like "The Germany will lose the war exactly at the moment when the war starts". The answer is Goering because that is who Hitler said it would be. The designated successor to Hitler was Hess until he flew off to Britain, then Goering until Bormann stabbed him in the back in 1945 and then Hitler declared that the Weimar Republic power structure should return with Goebbels succeeding Hitler's original position as Chancellor and Doenitz succeeding Hindenburg as President. When Goebbels killed himself, Doenitz appointed Schwerin von Krosigk as the new Chancellor. For Himmler to take power, he would have to implement a coup. The Army would never have allowed the SS to do this.

The war in the East reached the point of no return, even if Germany appointed a leader who wanted peace, the soviets would demand so much that the new Reich government would be forced into continuing fighting. They would probably ask for peace terms with the western allies and pull out of all occupied territories. After all, Churchill hated both Hitler and Stalin. With Hitler gone, and the Germans out of Western Europe, Churchill may have even supported this new German government against the Bolsheviks. ‘Operation unthinkable’ tells us Churchills views on the soviets.

If it weren't for Britain holding out more or less alone for about a year, Germany would have had a chance. Though the Western Allies would've solved this Dolphy problem had they intervened in 1938, and actually pushed into Germany when Poland was being invaded.

The British were still years away from having all the equipment and men necessary to successfully invade Germany. France was closer, but I doubt they would've held when the might of the German military bore down on them. No, the detonator in the brandy did not fail. Instead of a timer, it was designed to detonate when the plane reached cruising altitude. Soon after it took off, one of the engines began to run erratically. Rather than risk a landing, the pilot decided to fly close to the ground in case the engine failed totally, forcing them down.

Alot of inaccuracies in this. March 1943 Germany was still in a good position on the Eastern Front. Sure the Battle of Stalingrad had ended in the total collapse of the 6th Army, but elsewhere the Germans were counterattacking with overwhelming success. One such battle was the 3rd Battle of Kharkiv, in March that ended with just 4,500 German fatalties, and the total collapse of the city of Kharkiv and 45,000 Soviet troops killed, and completely destroyed the combat effectiveness of the Russian front. Which they had to spend April and May recovering from. The war only turned on its head for Germany in the late Summer of 1943, with the failure of Zitadelle in the Kursk region, and the allied landings in Sicily and Southern Italy. And had Hitler been assassinated, there would have been a coup. High ranking Wehrmacht officers would have seized power from the SS. The Wehrmacht and the SS can be described as the Soviets and Americans, they were not friends, but had a common enemy.

With Hitler dead in 1943, I see a civil war as possible scenario. At this point, Himler or someone else wouldn't be the only ones attempt to assume control, the Wehrmacht generals would likely be involved in this power vacuum as well. It may be possible that many Wehrmacht generals would surrender their forces in the Eastern and Western fronts and form alliances with the Allies against Hitler's remnants.

There was a period in time when Germany could have sued for peace and had a great chance of receiving a negotiated successful state. Pre Barbarossa of course. Best chance after the fall of France and before the Battle of Britain. Britain was actually very split around the time Churchill came into position. If Germany had done similar to this: Germany keeps its borders in Poland, Chzk, Austria, Denmark, keeps a province from Netherlands, Belgium, Alsace/Lorraine maybe more from France, and then: Releases all the rest. France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway restored to new borders, where they sign that all is well and forgiven so to speak. Britain may very well have accepted that and Germany would have doubled its border size. If Japan attacked USA a year later, Germany could just shrug and no European war. Although Germany would have still had some resource worries as far as 88 was of the mindset, they could have sold wheat and other resources for oil and other.
@lucasdamotta2931
@lucasdamotta2931 Жыл бұрын
I agree. When Germany defeated France in the 1870’s wars, Wilhelm I and Bismarck never intended to occupy France because they knew that would probably lead to an European coalition against Germany. The occupation of Western Europe was a no deal to UK, and to US as well. If Germany only had all France (Belgium Netherlands too) under the Vichy regime, and left the west alone, Churchill would be pressured badly from within UK to sign the armistice. With peace secured in the west, Germany probably would’ve a shot against USSR, since UK and US wanted the two to fight to death.
