I always got that wrong too, Gwyneth isn't an ancestor of Gwen. I had to look it up after rewatching her episode as its specified she's an orpban, no family whatsoever and as she dies so does her lineage. What the Doctor refers to is the rift remembering her face and over the generations of Gwen's family living near the rift that face got spat out again (that's terribly worded but hope you understand!)!

No, Dickens had already written “A Christmas Carol” long before the events in “The Unquiet Dead”! He’s actually sick of performing it in the episode. He IS working on “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. He tells the Doctor and Rose that he is going to include ghosts in the conclusion of the story. Except, Dickens never finished that novel, he was still working on it when he died.

They missed some other great choices for this list, too. Here’s just a few obvious ones, off the top of my head. -“Gretchen Alison Carlisle. Do something good and name it after me”. -Gretchen, Into the Dalek -“Clara, for what it’s worth, and it might not be worth much, but when your whole life flashes in front of you, you see people you love, and people missing you. I see no-one” -Psi, Time Heist (like Jack in Parting of the ways, he survives, but he’s absolutely sure he won’t and still stares the Teller down like a baller) -“Shh, Spoilers” -River Song, Forest of the Dead (As if I needed to give a reference for that epitaph!) -“Affirmative” -K9, School Reunion (I know, it was actually a self sacrifice, which should be a whole other list, but c’mon, you gotta include it!) -“I think sir, you know me at my best””Ready””Content” -Octavian, Flesh and Stone -“Did I ever tell you about this boy I met there, who pretended to be in a band? -Amy Pond [+36yrs], The Girl Who Waited -“Oh, you know nothing of any human, and that will be your downfall” -Harriett Jones (former Prime Minister), The Stolen Earth I actually wouldn’t have included either Doctors deaths, as they do come back in a fashion and know this, but I can live with it and remember Tennent’s description of the regeneration cycle. I definitely wouldn’t have added Donna, as I don’t think she knew she was dead, she just knew she may die, and, what do you know? She survived.

I, too, loved Clara with 12. I think she challenged and deepened the 12th doctor in a way that allowed Capaldi to show his more serious abilities as an actor. Hell Bent was my first modern Who episode, and even knowing very little about the series at the time--I had caught a few episodes of DW years ago with the 4th doctor but wasn't very into it--I was hooked! I had to know more, and have since gone down the rabbit hole! I loved the strong women of the modern era, and Clara was one of the strongest.

The first one that comes to mind is Iain Glen as Father Octavian in "Flesh and Stone" with a Weeping Angel's hand wrapped around his neck, telling Eleven to leave him and to not trust River.

No. You have Tenant at the bottom of that list? He should have been in there twice. I’m still haunted by his final line especially since that was actually Tenant realizing his time was at an end as well and not behind sure he had made the right decision. I think the most harrowing “death” in the Whoniverse was Jack being buried in cement. And every time Tenant had to say “Her name was Rose.” I’m tearing up just thinking about these. 😆

there are many multi doctor stories, but THIS one had two incarnations of the SAME doctor and Rose in the same place, the only other exception was big bang when the universe was ending anyway. And if you watched the multi doctor stories in EVERY instance THEY were not responsible for them meeting

You forgot about Astrid peth It’s in the Christmas episode voyage of the Damned, she knows that unless she does what she does, there is no way the doctor is going to survive, and he hast to survive, which makes her more than just companion material. It shows why the doctor himself is so heartbroken when she dies when he cannot save her and he really tries. If you watch the episode and you see the look on her face it says everything. Ironically, the character is played by Kylie Minogue and she plays her brilliantly.

Is there going to be a classic series version of this? A few more Doctor regens to use, particularly the 3rd and 5th Doctors, and plenty more self-sacrificing. Kane from Dragonfire is another one that sticks in the mind.

I think an interesting one is in the episode Let's Kill Hitler from series 6B, where after River kisses him with poisonous lipstick, the Doctor knows that he's going to die in half an hour. Instead of freaking out or giving up, he decides to dress in a fancy outfit and continue being himself for the last half hour of his life. His insistence on not having a bleak outlook coupled with his dismissive acceptance of his impending doom make it a fun episode.

Catherine Tate absolutely dominates every moment she's on screen in her season. There was so much development she had left and to see her character go from vain and shallow to a thoroughly decent woman by Journeys End and to have it stolen from her. The doctor took all that from her and it was easily the saddest moment of that season and a fate worse than death, and her acting in that scene shows it thoroughly.

I'm not sure how the third Doctor returning to the Great One's cavern in 'Planet of Spiders' doesn't feature here. It was the whole point of his regeneration, that he had to face his fear and that to go back would mean certain death. Could also mention the fifth Doctor in 'Caves of Androzani'.

@@morgaaaaaa still, the original comment was accurate! Plus, this list wasn't what I'd hoped for, either... where's Amy, when she turned away from the Weeping Angel to be with her husband? Where's River Song, who made sure Ten couldn't save her, so they would have their future (her past)? Either would have been vastly better than the Adipose's nanny! 🙄

@@MaryAnnNytowl Wrong episode for Amy. She doesn’t die at that point and wasn’t expecting to. This was simply a goodbye, if forever. A better choice would be Amy+36yrs in The Girl Who Waited (“Did I ever tell you about a boy I met there who pretended to be in a band?”) Spot on with River, though

Eccleston's Doctor had to lay the ground rules of what it meant to be a Time Lord for the new viewers AND reassure the classic Who fans that the series was back. It honestly doesn't matter what happened behind the scenes for the parting of ways for the BBC and Eccleston. The first series of the current Doctor Who ended in the only way it could; by showing the last rule of being a Time Lord...regeneration.

@@irrevenant3 I would like to think so. But I honestly don't think it would have worked for another season. I think without the information on regeneration at the end of that first season they would have lost all of the young people they wanted to capture with New Who on top of trying to make us older Whovians happy. I mean, we know regeneration is going to happen at some point. But the new generation? Given how popcorn instant gratification centric the world was becoming at the time they would have abandoned the show if it happened at the end of any other season.
