There has been a great debate for many years as to whether a 2 door or a 4 door Jeep Wrangler is superior. My wife and I are fortunate to own both and in this video we'll share with you a few things about her 2 door that have gone wrong over the last 3 years and then share with you the pros and cons of a 2 door vs. a 4 door.

In 2008 purchased a new 2 door Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Purchased with the idea of small town runs in northern, MI, something for fun. In 2018 we decided to load it up, take a trip throughout the West, making our way to Seattle, WA for a flight to Alaska. In total on this trip we hit 14 Nat'l Parks, traveled from Montana to Arizona, totaled 11,000 miles in the lower 48 with gas mileage at 20.3. Not a single issue. We left with no idea when we would return. We added additional cushions to our seats for comfort and shelves with rear seat removed for 2 tier packing as we needed summer clothes for southern states, cold winter gear for Alaska. Fast forward to 2021, Jeep has 52, 000 miles, we are 76 and 80. For us, a trip of a lifetime!

It's not for doing what I do on the rocks. That would seriously stop me as the departure angle would suck. It's great for towing. That's why you get racks. But offroading, the hitch becomes less usable unless a city dweller is just going to the local park.

2 door is the best!! I fed my daughter through the window into her car seat in the back of my 2 door for the first 3 years of her life until she was big enough that I could put her in the passenger seat and let her climb into the back between the front seats. With the top down, it was easy, but when the top was on, it was such a situation lol. I'd have to unzip and unvelcro the side window, toss it on the ground, then put her feet first through the soft top bows and roll bar and everything into her car seat. Then I would climb into the trunk area to do all the buckling, still worth it! =D I've never had any trouble finding upgrades for my 2 door, you can ask my wife, she will agree haha

This is lost on most today. From '41 - '06, we Jeepers have had amazing adventures in our 2 doors. I'm a minimalist and most men are or at least were during my upbringing. Nowadays everyone needs every creature comfort of home while camping, fishing and overlanding. If you have that mindset, just go on vacation in a luxury suv and stay in a 4 star hotel.

For 20 years, I drove a rusty 1994 wrangler…not so comfortable, but really practical. I went so many places and never worried about getting there. I’ve since upgraded to a 2021 Toyota Tundra and I love it! Super comfortable, but not super practical when I think of the places I went in that old rusty Jeep! Seriously, it would be nice to own 5-6 vehicles for different tasks. I’d still buy a 2 door Jeep to get into the back-back country if I had the means. Great video as always and I have enjoyed seeing the 2 of you in these videos. Cheers.

My only problem with the 2 door is that even with the rear seat out (took it out the day I purchased the Jeep), I can't sleep inside comfortably. Need the extra 6 inches of length that the 4 door provides. And, no, I do not want a roof top tent. If only the front passenger seat would fold flat, the 2 door would be perfect for camping in the boondocks.

I’m with her… 🤣 To each their own, but I’m partial to 2 door, manual, soft top. I have almost 25 years of driving them, 94 YJ, 02 tj, and currently a 08 jk. Take out the back seat and there’s plenty of room for two people and all the camping gear needed. My favorite so far has been hanging in hammocks under tarps that are pitched from my roll bar to a tree. In early 2020 I picked up a great condition, 1967 M416 trailer to camp out of and eventually mod to fit the needs of my wife and I to be comfortable traveling wherever we choose.

I test drove both the 2 door and 4 door options a several winters ago. It was a great day to test drive both the Jeeps. I was snowing all day and there was about 6-8 inches of snow on the local roads and some of the intersections had a lot of ice and very slick icy spots. The first Jeep I drove was the two door option. Do to the snow and the major road in front of the dealershiup, US-395, being heavy with traffic, I had made a right turn out of the dealership on the frontage road (heading north) and was going to make another 3 right turns so as to go around the large block the dealership was located on in order to get to a traffic light so I could make a left turn onto US-395 heading south. Dealership located at the south end of Carson City, NV. Then we drove half way up the Spooner Grade towards Lake Tahoe. At the first intersection after pulling out of the dealership, the slick ice spun the 2-Door Wrangler sideways. Throughout the whole test drive, this Wrangler felt squirrely. I just didn't quite fell at ease driving it. When I drove the 4-Dr Wrangler in contrast felt much more secure and solid on the icy roads. I was much more comfortable in and felt much more confident on the icy roads in the 4-Door verson. Since my daily commute was going to have me driving over 40 miles 1-way from home to work - Dayton, NV to Reno, NV - I was going to get the 4-Door Wrangler.

We have very narrow forest trails where that short wheelbase really comes in handy. where my friends with JKU's have to maneuver between the obstacles , I only have to point and shoot the most of the times ;) . I prefer the 2 door because I do own a BMW as well and I don't feel anything in that. I love being able to park my Jeep in tight spaces and with just one turn in...no maneuvering to get it right. Anyway...thanks for that comparison. I always enjoy your videos.

I would like to have a 4 door for the extra storage and being able to sleep in the Jeep better. The big downfall of a 4 door for me would be the turning radius. My 2007 JK allows me to turn around on tight mountain roads when the path ahead is no longer drivable. I would hate to have a 4 door and have to back all the way back down. I’ve made a platform in my Jeep so sleeping in the JK is doable even though it’s not luxury. This was a great video!

If you have a JL and a Tazer you can enable 4 wheel steering. It's amazing. The Tazer assists by braking the inside wheel. A Gladiator can turn the same radius as a 2 door JL using it.

Myself I don't go to the wilderness to sleep in a camper or truck. 07 2-door JK can hold everything we need. Hammock and a tarp for shelter sleep comfortable and dry. I cook with a cast iron pitchfork. No need to try and bring a full makeshift kitchen. A pitchfork is an amazing cooking utensil. There's something special about roughing it. Only bring what you need not what you want. Everyone remember to tread lightly. The more junk you bring to the trail the more you must take out. Keep it simple keep it clean respect Mother Nature.✌❤😃

I had a two door sport and a four door rubicon. My preference was the four door. It was a smoother ride in the corners and had a lot more cargo room. When you hit a bump on the back end with the two door, the back end goes flying. I got used to it but my passengers didn't like it. If you are going to go off roading with the four door, you need 37s compared to the two door only needing 35s. I initially had the stock 33s on the Rubicon and kept getting high centered.

We were full-time Overlanding in a 2018 two door JK this past year. We were so in love with “Stewie” and had such a blast but it ended up being way too small. It was such a hassle trying to fit everything in him. We had major rear sagging and he was overheating on our way to the Expo in Flagstaff. On our way back to the east coast we decided it was time to sell the Jeep and move on to something bigger. After having a Jeep, which needed quite a few repairs in the last year and the very low mpg, we decided to move on from Jeep and not get the four door. We miss him but we are in love with our new truck! So much space and much better mpg. Thanks for the video!

Brad and Regina thank you for the comparison. Although I’m still not a Jeep owner I’m getting closer as we just sold the oldest of our three MINI Coopers. Also we’re planing on moving from AZ deserts to NM mountains thus we’ll be needing a vehicle to explore in… Lots of folks have told me I’ll need the extra room the four door Jeep affords. However I’ve driven a MINI for twelve years so I’m quite used to tight quarters, and a tight turning radius.

Glad to see your comparison. After owning cj3a, cj5, yj, tj , and now LJ , I totally understand the storage issues. I lifted the rear seat in the LJ and it is very comfortable for me at 6ft2" and 240lb. The back of the Lj finally fits a fridge and power supply. The Lj actually feels long but it's very capable. Not ready for 4 door yet. We have a 2017 cherokee with 5.7 hemi and a Duramax crew cab pickup. Don't want another family hauler. We have a military trailer with roof top tent for long trips and a pup tent lives in the Lj for them emergency or spur of the moment camp outs. My wife also follows your channel and used your advice for fridge and power supply (works great by the way). Safe travels and keep making those videos.

I have a 2020 JL Rubicon Recon 2-door. I don't need the rear seat so I removed it. I also cut a 1/2" Rubber Horse Stall mat to fit in the rear area for my dogs. They love the traction they get with the mat so they don't slide around and you get a lot more storage space too.

Brad, I have been following you for many years now, and have made many modifications as I built my 4dr ‘15 Rubicon into an Overlander. The only upgrade I have seriously regretted, is adding 37” tires. I have never been able to find any tire pressure to get control of the “floating” sensation on the highway and around corners etc. I give up: I’m leaving the diffs for the 37’s, but pulling them back off. I’m going back to the 33” on stock wheels.. maybe someday I’ll try 35”: but those 37” were too heavy.. one feels like you are driving out of control on-road with them; I’m done.

Good points. I would also add that a 2 door generally is more capable stock than a stock 4 door. The short wheel base doesn’t require giant tires or lift to get the belly clearance that 4 doors need on the trail. I still love my 4 door especially with a 4 inch lift and 37s. Also, love that I can take 4 buddies with their gear for a camp out.

coming in a bit late, but I definitely prefer my 2-door to any 4-door I've driven or ridden in. I don't have passengers often, and it has plenty of space. I do agree that steep hills are a bit more nerve wracking without the wheelbase, but the turn radius more than makes up for it.

Looking to order a 2 door in the upcoming year. I do occasionally consider some of the options available on the 4 door and question if it is the way to go. 2 door Rubicon with a diesel and 35" tire option would be the cat's meow. Curious what engine you choose for the 2 door? I know the V6 is a proven motor and hear a lot of good things about the performance the 2.0 turbo. I keep going back and forth between the V6 eTorque and the 2.0 turbo.

Maybe an off the wall question but have you ever seen a 2 door gas tank next to a 4 door tank? I'm curious if it actually smaller or not. Years back jeep sold a 20 gallon tank as an option on the yj but the only difference was the vent hose was longer on the smaller tank and would be "full" faster. If you removed the vent line and cut it shorter the same tank would hold 20 gallons.

It takes us everywhere we want to go in the mountains. :) I love how easy it is turning around on the trail as well. It rides rough around town but her commute is really short (2 miles) and the Jeep is setup for what its intended purpose is. Any road trip is done in my 4Runner. I think you missed a critical question. "Better for what?" Regina seems perfectly happy with her choice because it meets her needs better than the four door. Other people have different needs and so the four door is better for them. More "road feel" with the two door is bad if you want a more comfortable drive, but good if you want to get out and have a more visceral involvement with the road. Regina did a wonderful job of biting her tongue while her husband showed off his "more authoritative knowledge". Great video! More!

I replaced my original windshield in my ‘17 JKUR after about 28K. Instead of Gorilla Glass I went with a generic $150 replacement and then found an Exoshield installer in my area. It’s a protective film and was warranted for two years, including glass replacement. It was $200, still much cheaper than a $600-$700 Gorilla Glass. I added on an extra year warranty for another $100. It’s been over a year and 11K miles and so far, so good! I’d encourage you to find an Exoshield installer and check into it!
